At the edge of the forest, there is a path that leads to Applegate City. It is pretty short: once you leave the forest it only takes about an hour to walk to the city. Sometimes, younger Pokémon decide to venture out and have made their home closer to civilization. Many trainers who have not yet obtained Cut sometimes come here to capture a few of the forest's Pokémon.

Wild Pokémon native to the area:

Caterpie, Metapod, Butterfree, Pikachu, Spinarak, Murkrow, Pineco, Teddiursa, Wurmple, Silcoon, Cascoon, Beautifly, Dustox, Seedot, Tailow, Swellow, Chimecho, Burmy, Buneary, Sewaddle, Swadloon, Emolga, Flabébé, Floette, Cutiefly, Skwovet, Greedent, Nickit, Thievul

"The human mind is like a parachute...

It had been quite the trek, but Regal could finally see Applegate City in the distance as he began to exit the forest. It was still quite a ways away, but the trainer figured he could probably make it there by sundown if he kept a steady pace. A long shower followed up with a good meal and a fluffy bed sounded pretty good after camping out in the forest for the last three nights. His Pokémon were sure to appreciate the break as well. For the time being though, it was business as usual.

"Use Detect to avoid those claws, Sylvain." The trainer commanded.

He and Sylvain were currently battling a wild Teddiursa, who was trying and failing to slice up the more agile Treecko with its claws. They let the little bear Pokémon tucker itself out before sapping its strength with Mega Drain and finally sealing it within a Pokéball. As the capsule teleported away to Professor Hemlock's lab back in Blume Town, Regal realized with a start that he had already used up most of the supplies he had purchased for his journey to Applegate.

"I guess we've been busy." He commented to Sylvain as the grass type was returned to its ball. "It's a good thing we're almost to the city." Clicking on his Running Shoes, the trainer took off with a bang as he began zipping along the road. What felt like a light jog for him ended up covering a good chunk of distance thanks to the controlled bursts of air that propelled him along. When he finally stopped an hour later to catch his breath, Regal was pleased to see that he was getting close. The sun was already starting to dip, but he felt confident that he would reach Applegate before it was nightfall.

As he finished stretching and got ready to take off again, the trainer heard the sounds of a windchime frantically rattling in the distance. Upon closer inspection, he spotted the source of the sound and quickly whipped out his Pokédex as he approached. According to the device, the Pokémon creating the sound was a Chimecho, which was flailing about in a panic as a pair of Skwovet harassed it. They all seemed to have happened upon the same berry, and now the rodents were trying to fend off the Chimecho so it could have the morsel to themselves. Not they needed it, judging by their bulging cheeks.

In the end, Regal released Icarus to fend off the greedy Pokémon with a swift Gust attack, being careful not to hurt the Chimecho. The first Skwovet took off running immediately, scared that it was going to become the Pidgeotto's dinner. The second, less lucky rodent got tangled up in the wind blast and landed in a heap on the ground where it was promptly sealed in a Pokéball. Pleased to add another page into his Pokédex, Regal made to return the device to his pocket, but quickly found his arm pinned to his side as the Chimecho affectionately wrapped its body around him.

"Glad to have been of service." The trainer wheezed as he managed to pry the psychic type off him. It seemed genuinely delighted for Regals assistance and it continued to follow him as he walked, so the trainer ended up offering it a Pokéball of its own and adding it to his team. Psychic types were both rare and handy, so he was happy to welcome it aboard. As he approached the city gates, Regal made a mental note to himself to organize his team after getting himself settled at the Pokémon Center. But before that, he had a dinner to get to.

"The human mind is like a parachute...

Despite leaving the dojo before him, Regal was shocked to find Master Yamamoto already waiting for him at the edge of the forest. Even more surprising was that the older man had already been to the Ranger Guild to prepare some tools for his training. He passed the trainer some Pokéballs that he was apparently supposed to use for capture requests on behalf of the rangers, as well as markers and barriers that he was to set up around the forest.

"The Ranger Guild is starting to have work pile up on them because of the upcoming bug catching contest." He explained while handing him the items. "By lending them a hand we can train you, help them and make you some money all at the same time."

On his list of Pokémon to catch were five different species, not including the Pikachu he had already agreed to capture. In addition to that, the two of them were going to set up the markers and barriers within the deeper parts of the forest so people wouldn't get lost during the bug catching contest. The toughest part of it all though, was that Yamamoto wanted Regal to do all of his Pokéball handling with his left hand.

"Something a lot of trainers don't understand is that you need to be able to fluidly multitask while you're in battle." The master explained. "Commanding your Pokémon, using your Pokédex, taking in your surroundings, analyzing your opponent... In an emergency situation, you might find yourself needing to defend yourself on top of everything else as well. Being able to make full use of your body will improve your battle skills tremendously."

That last part struck a cord with Regal, as he remembered some of his more dangerous encounters back in Nix City. Everything Yamamoto was saying was true. Of course, that didn't make relying on his non-dominant hand any easier. He fumbled his Pokéballs more times than he could count just trying to grab a Pokémon out to battle.

Luckily half of the Pokémon he needed to capture were already close by. Magnolia was able to lure in a hungry Spinarak by pretending to be caught in its webs before taking it down with a powerful Dazzling Gleam. And Sylvain was able to outspeed and subdue a wild Pikachu for him to catch as well. The Silcoon, thankfully, was a stationary target and therefore only took the trainer six tries before hitting it with a ball.

He was halfway there, but Regal was already sweating buckets from the exertion. Despite being a shut in for most of his life, the younger man had always thought of himself as quite the athlete. But this was a new level of difficulty. Not only was it taking more than twice as long to get anything done, but the level of focus required to do so was taking its toll on him. Yamamoto for the most part seemed to think he was doing fine, and urged the trainer to follow him as he continued deeper into the forest. They were only just getting started.
