Personality:
controlled | stubborn | tough | smart | addictive

Madelyn Kensington, youngest daughter of the Duke Kensington, knows exactly when to laugh and exactly what notes her laughter needs to trill along. She knows when to blush demurely behind a gently opened fan and when to lightly tap a gentleman's arm for being too ribald. And she knows when and how to smile perfectly and how deep a curtsy is just right. Her life is based on a series of societal niceties. As the daughter of a noble, Madelyn keeps herself tightly controlled, as cool as a frozen rose and untouchable as the most delicate glass. It is a public front: the perfect daughter, the noble, demure girl. Madelyn Kensington knows exactly how she should act and Madelyn Kensington is bored. Constantly.

She craves excitement and adrenaline like a fluttering moth craves light, but she is afraid to step too close. Instead, Madelyn dabbles in the business of safe risks and harmless novelties. Bored with her life of parties, balls, and petty noble intrigues, she searches for things to make her feel more alive. However, the girl knows she cannot truly risk her family's name for a few moments of tantalizing fun. Currently, her excitement lies in fighting dens, where she may watch two men fight yet still be properly removed from the situation. It makes her skin flush and itch. It makes her heart thud with the desire to be included. Her family dislikes this unladylike interest, but it is one thing Madelyn cannot give up. If they suddenly did not allow it, the girl knows very well how to sneak out and seek such excitements alone. In allowing her small things like attendance at fighting events, these tidbits of excitement, they can assure that she is properly chaperoned. Sometimes, she feels her family's name wind about her like a spider's silken cocoon.

One day, she swears she will toss everything to the wind and do whatever she pleases. It is an empty promise. There is too much filial duty within her, despite her longing for excitement. Instead, on many days she will lose herself, burrowing deeply into books of other people's live or fantastical tales. It is an escape for her. She also rides helter-skelter across the fields, feeling the wind across her face. The pressure to be utterly perfect is a little overwhelming, especially for a girl who has always longed for excitement. And although Madelyn realizes her life has been easy; everything is provided, dictated. She wants something more, an amorphous need of anything, anyone to change up her life. A burgeoning dissatisfaction droops throughout her body, and with each day, she grows more easily tired of the inane conversations surrounding her. Despite these desires, she shows only the barest of cracks on her public face; Madelyn is tougher than that, conditioned to keep her roiling emotion inside.

I want adventure in the great wide somewhere;
I want it more than I can tell.
And for once it might be grand - to have someone understand.
I want so much more than they've got planned.

History:
The Kensington family is old; old enough that their lineage can be traced back before the time of the walls, although the wheres of the family is unclear. They have money, and even if the towns they govern were to fail, the family would be set for generations. For Madelyn, the family lineage is something to sit stoically through as private tutors try to pound it into her head. It's boring, everyday.

At a very young age, Madelyn enjoyed the more earthy of activities: playing outside, catching small birds, climbing dangerously tall tress. Soon, however, her mother began to form her into the woman she is today. Conscious of her family, she acquiesced, becoming visibly the quintessential perfect lady. Madelyn received only the best private education in a wide range of subjects (her best subjects were fencing and politics). Her life has been relatively uneventful; even her foray into formal society at 12 was merely... as expected. To her suitors and acquaintances, she is a pale rose, careful only to laugh the expected amount: never more but never less. Her every move within society is calculated for maximum effect. As a result, Madelyn's attendance at functions is highly sought after.

The only blight on her record occurred when she was 15. A man of lesser station attempted to force her into a compromising position. Luckily, Sir Daniels was the one that found them. The man was challenged to a duel and summarily killed. What only Daniels and Madelyn know is that she had already broken her suitor's nose by the time Daniels arrived. Even now, Madelyn enjoys the memory of that incident: the fear, then anger, and finally, the duel. It was a moment in which she made her own decisions, fought her own battles.

Although Madelyn never acts out of character around her family, she often finds herself fantasizing about the what-ifs of a situation. If she were to punch Lord Weathers in the middle of the ballroom, why, what would happen? Would Countess Mathers scream or fight back if her hair were pulled? And perhaps even the Archduke Graham's son would come to beat her if she were to scuff his shining shoes. But, these are daydreams not meant to happen, and they only provide a fleeting moment of interest before banality sets in again. However, outside of the ballroom, Madelyn sometimes flits away to fighting dens to watch the sport. Dressed modestly with the utmost of care, and chaperoned as expected, she sits and feels something stir within her as she watches two men beat each other bloody. There is something about the visceral nature of these fights that pleases her, although she longs to participate.

Her family knows of these visits and more: of how she recklessly rides over dangerous terrain, of how she secretly looses herself in adventure novels and looks for anything that may give her a spike of excitement. She is fearless in this way. They are concerned, but entirely unsure of how to remold even the inner workings of Madelyn.
