It was two days into what she now called the "Powerless Days", two days after the hurricane had passed, and Belen was just waiting to get the call. She knew it was coming. She knew they wouldn't hold out much long. It was around noon when her phone vibrated, "Lisa" lighting up the screen. Belen picked up immediately.
"Hello."
"Hi Belen. I hate to ask this, but—"
"You guys can't eat without a microwave or restaurants, huh?"
"You know us too well."
"I'll be right there. Do you have a lighter?"
"I can look for one."
"I'll bring one just in case. I'm on my way right now. See you in—"
"Wait."
"Yes?"
"I love you."
"I love you, too, princess."
Belen grabbed her keys, a lighter, her leather jacket, and was out of the house in a heartbeat.
Honestly, this was just an excuse to go see her. Belen had been sitting in her room, bored out of her mind, never having thought losing electricity would be so torturing. The only comfort was hopping in the car, driving out of town to where there was signal, charging her phone, and talking to Lisa. She was afraid of going to her house after the terrible impression she had left with her mom by being, well, a lesbian, so she just spent the whole time talking to Lisa instead.
Now, in her car driving to Lisa's house, she realized she was almost out of gas. There was no way she would make it home with whatever was going to be left with, and the lines at the gas pumps were hour long waits. She smiled. Another excuse: this time, one to sleep over. She just hoped a warm meal would be enough to convince Lisa's mom to let her stay.
Belen almost rang the doorbell, and stopped herself with a sigh as she fetched out her keys. She wondered for the first time if Lisa's mom knew she had a copy of her front door's keys, but shrugged the thought away. She walked down the short hallway and knocked on the front door.
"Mrs. Bennett? Lisa? It's Belen."
Lisa opened the door, and the sight before her was the single most adorable thing Belen had ever seen.
Lisa was wearing black Dr. Seuss pajama pants with the Cat in the Hat characters, and on her feet were black and white panda bear slippers. She also wore a white shirt with a black cat's face on it, a shirt that Belen had bought for her. Lisa's blond and wavy hair was all over the place, and she was looking up at Belen with the cutest sleepy blue eyes and small sleepy smile.
She so had to have planned all this out.
"Um... uh..."
Lisa smirked up at Belen as the girl's ears quickly turned bright red. Belen had always been able to talk to cute girls with the knowledge that her cheeks almost never got red, only her ears, which she easily hid with a hat. A hat day had been a "talk-to-a-cute-girl" day, before Lisa came around. But here and now, Belen's cheeks were also very red, and not just from the cold.
Lisa giggled, and Belen's heart skipped a beat.
Lisa hugged an unsuspecting Belen. She hadn't realized that standing in the doorway in her leather jacket and jeans and hair down around her shoulders and cheeks slightly pink from the cold, and with her signature grin appearing automatically as the door opened, tall and confident and leaning against the door frame, and Belen's sudden appearance at her house as the hero coming to feed the hungry, Belen was the most adorable and welcome person in Lisa's life right then.
The two stood in the doorway, hugging each other and in awe of each other and reminding themselves of just how lucky they were to have found each other, the moment was the most perfect they had ever shared together.
And then Lisa's stomach rumbled.
Lisa stepped away and held her tummy, and Belen just laughed and laughed. Lisa looked up, a slightly embarrassed look on her face, and Belen just chuckled and punched her lightly on the arm.
"Come on. I'm gonna make you the best food you've ever had in your young life, and then we're gonna cuddle in your bed and Imma sleep over and it'll be the best day of our lives. How would you like that?"
Lisa smiled, leaned over to hug her girlfriend again, and said simply,
"I'd love that. And I love you."
