Hello everyone. My text colour is usually purple but I felt orange would fit this topic better. As you can probably tell I really like the monarch butterfly so I decided to make this thread. I saw a graph today about the monarchs in their overwintering roost sites in Mexico and it really concerned me. I knew that their population was decreasing but I didn't know that it was by as much as was shown. We can do so much to help them though. A big thing is to plant milkweed so I'd encourage you to do that if you can. The monarch has a less than 1% chance of survival in the wild so they need as much help as they can get. The return of the monarch butterfly is one of my favourite parts of summer and I'd hate to see them eventually disappear.

Here's the graph that I saw.

I'm not sure we get any monarch butterflies here in the swamps of south east Texas. Also, what is ha? I'd google it, but I feel that would be fruitless, I will go ahead and google milkweed. See if it's even grow able in this region. I don't see a lot of butterflies where I live, but there was this one city I went to once. It was kind of amazing all the butterflies that were there. It seemed so out of place to, it being a city and everything.

I haven't seen any yet but I have milkweed in my front garden and my neighborhood actually uses it as one of the community flower bed plants. Here's hoping. biggrin

I meant to mention this the day it happened but I kind of forgot. Anyway, last Thursday I saw a Monarch Butterfly! Yay! So that made me pretty excited. So far it's the only one I've seen this year but at least I know that they're starting to come around again.

I have an embarrasing, paralyzing phobia of moths and butterflies gonk I think it's cool that you are trying to look out/be activist-ish for a problem you see in the world that you care about, though. Too many people just complain about what they see wrong (or become "activists" in a way that somehow manages to be negative) instead of trying to fix it through POSITIVE action.

Good for you for being an activist. I didn't even know this.

Been awhile since I last posted in this thread but I felt it necessary after watching a SciShow video today. Back in the 90s there were over a billion Monarch Butterflies. Now there are only about 35 million. Their population has decreased by about 90% and the US Fish and Wildlife Service is considering putting them on the endangered species list. I guess I just want to say again that if you can plant milkweed, please do so.

I have good news. After last year's record low the monarch butterfly population has increased by 69%. It's still their second lowest so they still need a lot of help but at least there was a bit of an increase. Here is this year's graph in case you're interested.
