Shun blinked, tilting his head a bit. The pie would have been sufficient, but then Elliot went on and offered to buy him some goods for later on as well. He cast a glance over his shoulder, regarding the pink haired guy somewhat.

"Yes. Things that keep are more preferable. I don't really have a place to store food too well," he stated.

There was a bit of silence as he furrowed his brow.

"You don't need to give me much. Rather not have to carry stuff like that through the slums."
PostPosted: Sun Jun 08, 2014 11:45 pm

"Fair enough. No doubt you'd be a walking target if you went around carrying a bag of stuff," The boy acknowledged as he shoved the coins back into his pockets, "But I'll get you as much as you can carry in your pockets or something, I guess. A little goes a long way with dried goods."

Water would be hard, but...well. Maybe a small reusable bottle or something? A filter would actually be best, since clean water was the main issue, but...

"...I think it'll be best for you to pick and choose and let me know what you want based on what you think you can carry safely." That was easier.

Shun nodded curtly, accepting that compromise.

"Very well. That should do. Just let me know what your budget is."

He paused now and turned towards Elliot. They were out of the slums and were now in more of a normal commercial-ish-slash-market-type area.

"This place seem familiar at all to you?"

"My budget is 'enough to get you this much, at least'," Came the dry reply as he jingled the coins in his pocket, "And er...yeah, this place looks familiar enough. I guess let's get you that pie first, and we can shop while you eat or something. Bakery's this way, right?"

He sounded uncertain--to be fair, he had only done very minimal exploring of the town while the festival had actually been going on--but he let his feet carry himself forward anyways. Whether he had actually known where he was going or whether it was just blind luck, the boy did eventually find himself in front of the bakery. Of course the scent of freshly baked goods was kind of a give away too.

...Maybe it wouldn't hurt for him to get a pie for himself too.

"Meat, I'm assuming?"

Shun eyed his pocket, then nodded. However, he regarded Elliot a little warily for the moment as he didn't sound too confident that he knew this place. The man nodded slowly, then went on towards the bakery, as the pink haired boy pointed out.

"That would be preferable, yes," he nodded. Meat was a little harder to come by usually. Well. Anything that wasn't straight up starch in general was. Even so, he wasn't about to turn down something that was more substantial than a piece of bread and maybe some cheese.

Meat it was. Gesturing for Shun to wait here, Elliot made his way into the bakery and greeted the man standing behind the counter. After a good minute or so, the boy emerged from the shop carrying two warm, wrapped pies. "Careful, the center is probably scalding hot," He warned as he handed one off to Shun.

Taking a bite of his own--as expected, it was hot, but also very good--he let out a thoughtful hum.

"Okay, you lead the way as we check out the stalls so that you can tell me what you want from them." This was in part so that Shun would have control over what he needed to buy, and in part because Elliot was too lazy to lead himself.

As Elliot requested, Shun waited patiently where he stood, placing his hands back into his pocket. While he was there, he idly looked around until flower boy returned with the pies. He took his share and carefully unwrapped it. Lightly, he blew on it and took a tentative bite. Yes. It was really damn hot. He'd have to wait for it to cool more before eating.

"Thank you," he murmured before giving a nod. The man went on off towards the market stalls, letting the steam roll off his fresh pie. There were a lot of good things available normally, but with it being late in the afternoon, a number of stalls were getting ready to close up for the day.

He spotted one area with what looked like fish jerky of some sort.

"Maybe some of that."

Following after Shun, Elliot remained quiet as he focused a good portion of his attention on trying to eat his pie without burning himself. It actually took him a moment to realize what "that" was referring to, but once he did...

Oh god, fish jerky. Not a fan of any sort of fish himself--it all smelled like his cat's treats to him--the boy wrinkled his nose, but...well, if that's what Shun liked and wanted then that was what he would get. Moving forward to talk to the stall's owner, he was immediately confronted with someone who was clearly over-eager to make a deal.

"5 copper marks for this bag!" The saleman held up a bag of jerky the size of his head, "Just 5 copper marks! It's a great deal!"

Elliot stared at him blandly. "If I buy that, my "friend" here is going to be mugged and stripped naked come morning. I'll take the smaller batch for 1 copper mark, please."

That shut the guy up. Making the exchange, Elliot tossed the bag of jerky over to Shun before lifting a hand to point at him. "Alright, that's one thing down. Let's keep looking."

For a good while, Shun was just staring at the merchant. That was... a lot of fish. Way too much for him to bring back all at once. He'd probably have alleycats swarming him otherwise. He took the smaller portion, then took a bigger bite out of his pie now that it wasn't quite so hot. It tasted remarkable, now that it wouldn't burn his tongue off.

He wandered further on, glancing here and there. A lot of things looked good to eat, but they weren't all really suitable to be keeping around for awhile. He did manage to come by a place with fruits. Both dried and fresh. The fresh stuff tasted better of course, but again it was a matter of practicality. It looked like they had some bags of what appeared to be assorted fruit with nuts.

"Maybe one of those packages?"

There was plenty he wanted to ask Shun--how long the man had been on the streets, how he coped on them, where his family was--but Elliot knew better than to voice any of these. Forcing any and all of his curiosity down, the boy, who had apparently been hungrier than he had initially realized, polished off the rest of his pie and then glanced over at the stall selling fruit.

"Hmm, not bad," Tossing away the paper his pie had been wrapped in, he eyed the food stuffs available at the stall. "Some fruit and nuts would definitely do you good. They won't last long though...think you can stuff two in your pockets?"

Maybe? Maybe not? It didn't matter, as Elliot didn't even really wait for an answer before he went and purchased two bags of the stuff. He was sure that Shun could cram them somewhere.

"They're dried. It should be alright for awhile, I think," Shun noted before nodding, "I think so. I could take one for certain."

He eyed the bags, judging them a bit.

"Better stick with one."

More food was always good, but this wasn't a situation where he could really be greedy.

Too late, Shun--Elliot had already bought two. The pink-haired boy would just have to hang onto one himself, then...or perhaps pawn it off on his parents, since dried fruits and nuts weren't exactly his cup of tea either. He was a little pickier than he really should be considering his family wasn't made of money, but Elliot couldn't help what flavours his tongue was averse to.

"How long will all of this food last you anyways?" Elliot found himself asking as he passed over one of the packages. Just looking at it, it seemed like he was buying a lot...but on second glance, all he had purchased were things that most people would consider snacks. Nutritious, maybe, but not super filling.

It was easy for Elliot to say that life in the slums was tough, but apparently he didn't quite realize how tough.

Taking the bag, he went ahead and stowed it away for the time being.

"Around a week, maybe more, depending on how well I ration things," Shun replied with a light shrug. Two weeks would really be stretching it. The things they had gotten weren't particularly filling. It'd help him, but he'd still be hungry, probably. He wasn't about to blow it all off in one day if he could help it.

"...But again, thank you."

"Ration it well then, I guess. I wish I could do more, but..." He wasn't so idealistic as to think that he could somehow feed every hungry person in the slums around here. It would be nice if such a thing were possible, but it was way out of his hands. The only ones who could probably do anything about it was the monarchy and, well...

It was already pretty clear how much they didn't care about the common people.

"Don't mention it. Thank you for helping me navigate out of there." There was a moment of pause, and then he shifted, distributing his weight from one leg to the other in a restless fashion, "And uh...I guess I probably won't be seeing you again after this, so good luck in the military."

"You've already done more than I would have ever expected out of anyone, really," Shun said with another shrug. With a curt nod, he turned on his heels to head back into the alleyways.
