The Lonesome Child.

Chapter 1 Into Loneliness

The wind blows cold with the falling rain, pouring down onto a lone girl, shivering in the darkened corner of the city street. Her clothes are tattered and dirty, she's sick, and her stomach growls from hunger. Her heart is broken from the terrible lost of her family and her friends. It brings tears to her eyes just thinking how they died. So many deaths, so many injured, so many with out houses to keep them warm through the dark and rainy nights. She whispers with grief, " If only they would have listened..." She sits there all alone in the darkness of the street, looking at a torn picture with her loved ones on it. "... if only they were here..." She buries her head in between her knees.

It comes back to her. "Daddy! Daddy!" The girl shouted excitedly, " Look what I've found! Look daddy!" The little girl ran up to him with her hands clasped together. "Hey! Let me see what you've got." The man grins, while the little girl stopped and opened her hands. A small, beautiful frog jumped up and landed right on his face and startled him, making him fall backwards onto the ground with a thud. Running to his side, she asks, "Are you ok, daddy?" The frog jumped off, right into the flowing green grass. The man laughs, "I'm alright, Marria. I'm OK."

He looks up into the blue sky, watching the white lcoud go by. "Isn't this a beautiful day? Just laying here, watching the clouds go by..." He says with a smile. Marria just nods and gazes at the clouds. "Hey, daddy! I see one that is shaped like the frog! Can you see it?" She points, and he follows. "I'm not sure... oh now I see it. Yes it is shaped like a frog, isn't it?" They both laughed as the clouds pass by.

The girl sits in the rain, crying for her dead loving dad. She's drenched from the rain and freezing from the cold, icy wind that lashed at her like a whip. In the far distance she could hear the faint footsteps of boots splashing in the puddles that got in the way. She could hear the clatter sound of a combat rifle dragging on the ground, hitting every stone and every hole in the road as the man drags it with him. The girl dragged herself behind some ruin of a building destroying during the war.

The footsteps get louder, seeming like the person is coming for her, to kill her and every last one of the people in this town. Then before she could completely hide behind the rubble, she accidentally hit something that echoed through the darkness, and alerted the person to pick up his gun and started to investigate. The girl got even more frightened then before. She coils up into a ball trying to make herself as small as possible as the footsteps seem to get closer to her. Her heartbeat beats faster as the echoes come from the nearby entrance of the alleyway.

His footsteps are steady in pace. His face concentrating on what's in front of him, keeping his gun aimed where he looks. The girl hears him getting closer. She looks around frantically around for something to fend him off, but nothing looked good enough. The girl pushed herself closer to the wall, but in her process of doing that she pushed something that skidded across the ground, about 6 feet in front of the man. He heard and spotted the store that moved. She gasped silently hoping he didn't see it, but she know he did, by the footsteps that suddenly stopped. A click echoed through the darkness, breaking the silence. She got the type of fear that shivers through your body; you know that you’re going to die, all alone.

The footsteps started again, matching every 3rd heart beat of the frightened girl. The sound is so close that she can hear the man's staggering breath as if he was also scared. He didn’t know what was hiding just beyond the rubble. When he got close enough, he moved quickly in front of the girl and scared her. She started to scream, echoing through the night for all to hear, or whoever is still there.

The man was about to pull the trigger until he heard her scream. His arm carrying the gun shacks, his body does the same, and he drops the gun. As it falls, he becomes weak and falls to his knees. Blood covering his body, his uniform torn, his skin covered in cuts and being exposed to the cold rain and the wind. The soldier manages to say, but with pain in his tone, "...sorry... I didn't mean to..." He falls backwards into a puddle, the icy liquid splattered droplets onto her cold skin. The girls eyes widened. The memories came flooding back, hitting her like a ton of bricks.

Her brother was laying right in front of her, bleeding from the cuts and bullet wounds. She was frightened, but she pulled herself out from her corner, crawling to his side. She yelled, shacking her brother slightly, "Brother! Brother, please wake up!...please..." The sheer sadness in her voice woke him up, showing his blue, motionless eyes. "Brother...what happened to the rest? Where are they?" Her face shows that she already knows the answer, but she is still uncertain. He looked at the expression on her face, and then turned his head away from his sister. "Well…uh...they're gone. Some of them are still alive, but barely..." He shuts his eyes, counseling his emotions. She tried to cheer him up, "Lets go help them. We can help. Lets go and... "

He yelled out his interruption,"Marria! Didn't you hear me!? They’re dead! There’s nothing we can do." He then coughed up blood, growling in pain. Marria tried to tend to his pain, sobbing the whole way. "But big brother... you said you'll... help people when they needed it... tha-thats why you... you came here.. to help people, big brother..." Tears started to drop down off her face onto his uniform. He sighs, groaning a bit. "Marria, I know what I said, but…" He coughs up blood again, now starting to stream down the sides of his face."... there’s no way for... me to go back in this condition... I’m to weak to go back... by time... by time I get there... it'll be to late."

He looks up at the sad girl’s face, her tears streaming down her face, wishing there could be another way. "I'm sorry Marria...but...I can't help them..." Marria yelled at him, "How could you say that big brother!? You promised you would protect them no mater what! What...what happened to that promise you made me?!" She cries out, covering her face with her cold hands as her brother looks at her, feeling guilty. "If you’re not going to do anything about it...I'll do it my self!" She grabs his gun and starts to get up, but the man grabs the gun, stopping her.

"Let go! I'm going save them!" He keeps a tight hold of the gun. "Little sister, don't do this, don't soil your hands with blood...." He continues to cough blood. "...you must stay here, Marria!" Marria continued to cry as she spoke. "What about the others?" She's staring at him with tear filled eyes. He sighed. "Marria, you have a big heart, but right now you need to wait here with your brother. It's the only way that we can survive, so we could save them." He starts coughing more and more, to the point where he vomits out blood. He pulls in his sister closer. “Marria, I’m going to die. I need you to be here with me...I need blood... in order to live."

Marria's eyes widened a bit. "... m-my blood?...b-but brother... father said..." He pulled her in closer, his hand around her wrist. "I'm sorry sister Marria, but I have to... live…I got to have...blood," Coughing still, while not as harsh anymore, but he’s already fading away. "Just a little bit, sister... I won’t kill you... promise." She thought for a few seconds, watching her brother getting weaker by the second. Marria then nodded, agreeing cautiously. "Thank you sister...I owe you big time..."

Marria brought her wrist to her brother's mouth, closing her eyes while waiting for him to bite down and pierce her skin with his sharp fangs. She feels the sharp points pressing slightly on her soft skin, getting harder every second. Continually feeling the fangs pierce her skin and sinking more into her wrist, Marria bit her lip and let out small groans. His fangs burst a vein and making the wound bleed out. Soon the tips hit her artery slightly, making her fingers twitch. Marria wanted to pull back from her big brother, but his grip was strong; it kept her arm from going away.

The blood trickled into his mouth, some escaping from his lips that pressed into the skin of her wrist. Marria was shaking from the slight pain that was once horrible, but now lessened to a stinging pain. As her brother drank her warm pure blood, Marria became light headed. “Big brother.... stop.." Marria dropped to her knees, splashing in a small mud puddle. Her brother saw her fall to her knees, slowly pulling out his blood covered fangs. He licks her wound as she scrunches her face a bit with a slight stinging sensation. He brings his face up from her wrist and licks his lips clean and fangs. Marria placed her wrist on her chest and wraps her other arm around it, trying to keep the rain water from stinging her wound.

Her eyes halfway open, her body slumped with weakness. "Marria...are you OK?" Marria looked up at him with weary blue eyes gazing at his. "B-brother..." She slowly closed her eyes, her vision getting blurry. She starts to lean to the side and continues till she falls unconscious on the cold, hard, wet pavement, making a slight splashing sound. Her brother tries to get up, but his body wouldn't move. His body is still too weak and battered from the war that's still in play. "Marria!" Her brother yelled. His body won’t even budge. His mind curses his weak body. So cold and weak, unable to move even with new blood. His body slowly starts to fade with his mind.

Her brother spoke softly one last time, " Marria...sister..." His vision went blank. Raindrops falling onto the skin of ice, motionless. Clothes and hair drenched. Skin so wet and cold, icy water surrounding them in thin layers on the hard cement floor that the motionless, lifeless bodies lay on, not breathing, no movements besides the droplets of water dancing around them. The darkness caves in on them, getting smaller and smaller; hardly seen in the stormy night. Seeming like no one is there, nothing but the shadows that stretched into forever and the sound of the rain pouring down on the objects that lay on the beloved cold ground.

The Lonesome Child

Chapter 2: Salvation

Rain droplets slid down the ridge of the metal pipe, slithering it's way down to it's destination. Closer and closer it gets towards the edge where the metal and air meet. It slings to the brim and its grip loosens on the smooth edge of the pipe. The droplets grip falterers, and it hurls towards the massive oblivion below. Silent cries for help aren't heard. Faster the drop hurtles, before splashing on the icy flesh of a man’s cheek.

His closed eyes scrunches, wrinkles forming, then his eyes opened. Blinking before searching his surroundings, he is suddenly hit by a flash of memory. Marria in the pouring rain, falling to her knees, very weakened. Her face shows no emotion, no movement, just staring at him. She falls and collapses to the ground. The man sits up quickly, pushing himself from the well bedded mattress, yelling out, "Marria! Marria!"

He looks around the strange looking room he laid in. A sharp pain surged through his whole body, making him wince in pain, and he falls back onto the bed. The door swings open, a person runs in and breathes heavily, stopping right by Marria’s big brother, asking him, "Are you ok, sir? I heard you yell..." The boy continues to breathes as the man looked over his face, squinting a bit because of the pain. The man says with slight pain, "Where am I?...where’s my sister Marria?" The man tries to sit up, but the boy pushes him down gently. "No, you should stay down. You’re in no condition in getting up, sir. And your sister is in the other room. I'm afraid she hasn't woken up yet..."

The man’s eyes shot wide open. "I need to see her! I need to see Marria!..." He pushes himself up growling. “…I need...to see my...sister!" Pushing himself to get up, the boy tried to keep him down. "Sir, you’re gonna hurt yourself, your injuries are very bad. If you don’t lay down, You'll kill yourself!" The man just keeps on going, pushing the boy out of his way. He stands up sheepishly, and makes his way out, limping. "Marria! Where are you?!"

The man checks every door he comes across, finding nothing. He opens up the last door in the hall way and finds Marria, laying motionless, her face blank as it could ever be. her brother walking close to her, "Marria..." He speaks softly as if trying not to wake her. He gets close to her bedside; the boy comes in following after him. Her brother takes her hand, holds it and lays his other one over the top of them. He stares at his sister, hoping she'll wake up any second. But she's just lying there, just a body of what he known as his little sister Marria.

He whispers, "I'm so sorry Marria...I didn't mean for this to happen. Little sis...please wake up? Wake...up…please wake…up." Tears start to run down his face. He lays his head down, mourning for his sister, wanting her to wake up. Wanting to hear her sweet voice, wanting to see her loving smile again, wanting to hear her say, "I love you, big brother. You’re the best." The blanket gets wet with his tears. "Sis, wake up. I need you...you’re the only family I have left...please…wake up!" He continues sobbing sorrow-filled tears, wishing for the little life to perspire in Marria to wake from her slumber. The boy walked in closer to him as his head lay on the bed of tears. "…are you ok, sir?" He places a hand on his shaking shoulder, "She’s going to be ok, she just…"

Marria’s brother pushes his arm off his shoulder. He stands up, towering over the boy. " You don't know that. What I’ve done to her could have been fatal! And the looks of her like this... " He bares his long fangs to the boy, wrinkling his nose, and a with angry glow in his eyes. The boy stared at the sight of his fangs, he didn't realize that what he brought into his house was the enemy. "Hey take it easy, sir…I don't mean any harm!" The vampire closes in on the boy with a limp in his step. The boy backed away, trying not to get caught. He got backed into a corner, trapped like a rat. A person walked in through the door with a tray. It was a middle aged man, in his mid-30's or 40's, his hair black and short, glasses resting on the bridge of his nose. "I'm back with..."

His gaze switched to the monster that trapped the boy in the corner. The man dropped the tray and ran behind Marria’s brother. “Get away from my son, you fiend!" The man pulled out a cross and pushed it onto the back of the brother. The vampire arched his back and gave out an ear piercing shriek. He frantically tries to pull off the cross. Finally, he tears off his shirt, allowing him to remove the holy symbol. He throws it to the side. Now his back has an engraved scar of a cross. He turned around to the man with a glare of rage. His chest shows the scars and stitches holding his recent wounds together. It wasn't any surprise to either one of them to see, they saw him before as they stitched his wounds. The man said, "Why do you attack us? We saved your life, we did that..." The vampires glare softens a bit. Why, he thought, why would you help a vampire? The vampire looked away to the girl that still laid in the bed, unmoving. His glare returned to the man and child. Maybe these humans can bring Marria back.

"Bring life to Marria, and I ‘may’ spare your lives..." The vampire spoke harshly. "…’till then, you’re safe...for now." The boy now hid behind his father, while his father nerves froze he managed to bring himself to talk, "My son and I were already going to nurture her back to life... ike we did to you..." He said all-reassuring, as the boy smiled and nodded."She should be awake in a few days or less." The vampire looked back at them with very little rage now, but still thought; they better watch themselves, once she gets better, we’re leaving. He switched his gaze to Marria, then he looked away, then disappeared without a word.

The father walked over to the tray that lays on the ground, kneeling down and replacing every dish back on the tray. The boy, still shacking from the event that passed not to long ago, went over to Marria to check out her pulse and stats, "...father?" The boy still looks at the girl on the bed side. "Yes, my son?" "Why are we taking care of the vampires?" "Well, just because, even though they’re a threat to us, they were injured and in need of help." He looked over at the boy, "And if you treat them how you want to be treated, then they may do the same." The boy looked over and forced a smile, and thought to himself, "We are toast."

The vampire returned to the room that he woke up in. He walked over to a chair and sat down. The table next to him had all of his belongings on it: his rifle, dog tags, magazines for his rifle, and some photos. He picked up the photos and looked through them, one of them had Marria and him in a green valley, with a cottage in the background where they used to live in before all this had happened. The other picture; it's a picture of the family: mother, father, grandma and grandpa, him and Marria. "...I will avenge you all my brethren and sisters..." He whispered, bearing his fangs. "I will stop you Tai Tong...I swear my life on it." He slammed his fist on the table, scarring a woman about his age.

She's outside the door and spying on him, or admiring him. The vampire stood up from his seat, while walking from the seat to his bed, he thought, "Marria...get well, sister...sorry for the pain I gave to you." Ignoring the scent of human and then lays down on the bed. "I'm sorry..." he spoke, a tear escaping his eye. The girl noticed the tear, but it was an odd color for a human. "Is he crying blood?" The girl questioned her self, watching him. He whispered a little lullaby to himself, like it's calming him down. "As I gave you damage, I'll tack your sin..."

"Forgive me, Marria." He unfolds a pocket knife and he digs it down into his wrist. The girl looking upon is shocked, and runs through the door. "No! stop! Don't do that to your self!" The man’s eyes shoot open to look at the human that shown herself. She stopped over by the bedside and reaches for the weapon. He withdrew away before she could grab it, but her hand grabbed his bloody wrist. "What are you doing here, human?" he said half aggressively. The girl gasped when her attempt failed. She didn't speak, just stared at the blood dripping out. "I asked…what are you doing here?" She didn't flinch, she just stared, her gaze becoming more lustful.

"Blood...mustn’t give in." She thought to herself, then finally she pulled away, her hand covered in blood, stuttering, "I…I…was trying to stop you... from hurting yourself." She looked at his wrist. "I.. guess I didn't, did I?" she blushed. The man stared at her for a second before he said," Leave. Now, human. You have no purpose in this room…"

She was stunned, but then relaxes as she closes the door behind her. She leans her back up against the door. She stares at her hand, now covered with a red liquid. She licks the blood off of her hand. “Well, at least I didn't give myself away. He didn’t know I’m not human...guessed the potion worked.” She thought as she walked down the hallway going towards the exit.

Chapter 3 : Escape

Rain poured down in the night sky, hitting the window. The father looks out the window while preparing a nice meal to end the long day that turned grungy. He stirs his wooden spoon in the silver pot as it steams out a delicious scent.

The child walks in and smiles. "Father, do you need help?" The man shows an appreciating smile. "Oh yes... I would like some help, thank you." He continues to stir. "Can you hand me that pepper over there?" The boy nodded and walked over to the spice-rack and searched. After a few seconds of scrambling through spices, he picked up the pepper shaker and started walking towards his father with a helpful grin on his face. " There you go pa."

“Thank you" The father takes the pepper and shakes it over the pot being carful not to add too much.

"What are you making?" The boy asked, smelling the aroma from the pot.

"Oh, just some special soup that my mother made for me when I was your age. I'm making it so we and our guests will be warm for the night since it’s all cold and wet." He continues to stir a bit and then brings a spoonfull of soup to up to his mouth to taste it. "Mmmm…good soup. Tastes almost like my mothers soup. It's done. Get me a few bowls so I can serve some soup to everyone."

The little boy smiles, "OK, pa." He pulls a stepstool close and opens the cupboard. He climbs up and grabs a few bowls and then climbs down. He walks back over to his father and places the bowls out on the table so they can all be filled with the great smelling soup. The father starts to serve the soup in each bowl. The boy smiles at the smell that tickles his nose. "I think the other people are going to like your soup you made for them, because I already do." The father chuckles a bit, "I'm pretty sure they will too."

Juto sits on the edge of his bed, looking at a tattered picture of his family, with everyone's face still visible. His mom, dad, brother and his sister Marria with her pet fox, and himself with his military uniform on. This was the last picture he ever had of him and his family together; then the war came and destroyed his home town and his family. the only family that he knew survived was his sister. He places a hand on his forehead and a elbow on his knee, still looking at the picture.

He hears a knock on the door, so he puts his picture away and says, " Come in." The door opens up, and the father comes in with a tray of food. "Here you go sir, I hope you enjoy the soup I made." He sets his food down on the table by his bedside. Juto just stares out into space. The father looks at him for a little bit and starts to head out the door, not wanting to stick his nose into other people's business.

"Hey…" Juto says to him before he leaves. The man stops and looks back, "Ya? what is it?" Juto paused for a second, "Is my sister, Maria, going to be fine?" The man sat down next to him on the bed side, "She should be OK; she hasn't gotten any worse. She's getting better, she just needs to rest it out. She will wake up."

"I hope your right... because if she dies your going to die...." Juto said bluntly.

"She will be, please don't be so hostel towards us! We managed to save your life so I'm pretty sure we can save your sister's too. So don't worry. Now eat your soup before it gets cold. It wont taste all to good when it's cold." The man smiled as if not threatened by what Juto said to him. Juto just sat there silent looking off into space again. The man got up and headed to the door again, and he closes the door behind him, leaving Juto alone. Juto looked over toward the door and sighs, "Better eat while I still can."

He picks up the bowl of soup and the spoon. He takes a sip from the spoon, then gets a small tingle in the back of his head up to his nose. He places the spoon in the bowl and set the bowl down on the table. Juto looks out the window, gazing out wondering what is out there. "This isn't good." He thought to himself. He stood up from the bed side and rushed to the door. Grabbing the door knob the tingle sensation got more intense. "It's getting so close. Marria…"

He pulled the door open and ran down the hall to Marria's room. He swings the door open hastily; seeing the father and the son in her room. They looked surprised at him with wondering looks. The father asked, "What's wrong? Why aren't you..."

He got cut off by Juto pushing him out of the way to gather Maria up and leave. "What are you doing?" The father said as Juto picks up Maria, as the tingling sensation increases more.

"I have to get her out of here, something bad is coming here, you should leave while you still can." Juto explained.

"Why? Tell me what's going on?"

The boy said all scared, "Father we need to go."

"What’s going on? Tell me?"

Juto went silent, more worried about getting out of there then saving these people. "Just get out of here for your own good. Either stay here and die or run as far as you can go."

Father grunted, "Let me go with you, Marria still needs us in order for her to revive. Let us come with you!"

The tingling sensation is getting unbearable, "Ok, just hurry up! If you fall behind…I'm not going stop."

"Ok, let’s go son." The father grabs his coat and a bag of emergency supplies and the son grabs his coat too and his bag. They were ready to leave until the danger finally caught up to them. It was too late. They were stuck in the house, trapped.

"Damn it! All this needless chatter got us trapped!" Juto said to the father. The father replied calmly as he could. "There’s a basement down stairs. There’s a hidden door just over there." He points to a wall just on the other side of the room. "We can hide in there for the time being. Hope they don't find us." Juto said, knowing that they will find them eventually. "We can hide down there till they find us. So let’s go." They heard the crowd outside pounding on the door as they were trying to break it down. Their thirst for blood overwrote their minds to not think straight. They smell the humans.

They closed the cellar doors behind them as they heard the door breaking down and the monsters fled inside searching for the humans to feast upon. The little boy whispered to Juto, "What are we going to do? They are going to find us." A tear streamed down across his cheek. "I don't know what to do. There’s no way out of here..."

"Maria, I'm sorry for all of this, please forgive me." Juto thought in his head while looking at Maria.

A cracking sound was heard behind them. The child gasped. The father pushed the boy behind him to protect him. Juto just sat there with Maria in his arms, staring down whatever that is coming out of the wall. Then, there was a big hole. The father swallowed hard; the kid crying with fear of what’s going to come out or peek through. Then they saw a head peeking through the opening saying softly, "Is anyone in there? I'm here to help you!" The voice was feminine, but Juto couldn’t make out the face vary well. "Yes we're in here, help..." The father put his hand over the boys mouth to stop him from talking. The boy’s words was muffled. The girl replied back, "Don't worry, we will get you out."

The wall starts to break down more and more, showing more of the figure’s shape. It's still too dark to see the female’s details. The groups trapped inside were calm even though they could hear the footsteps roaming around upstairs. Their thoughts are pleading for the monsters not to find the hidden door before they can escape.

"Come on, the way is cleared. Let's get out of here." She sniffed, "Wait…" The girl rummaged through a small backpack, taking out a bottle from her pouch. "Take a few drops of this and it should get rid of your sent, so the vampires can't smell you. Take it quick." She gives the bottle to Juto. Juto didn't say anything. "This may be our only chance, and Marria's only chance." He thought as he toke a few drops and tried to give some to Marria, then handed it to the Father.

"Are you sure this is going to work?" The father asked. The girl told him quietly, "Just take it so we can move! They can smell you and you guys won’t last much longer down here without that potion." The father felt nervous and scared now. He took a few drops quickly and gave it to his son and pushed him to take it quickly. "Ok, now lets get out of here. They shouldn't have a sent on us anymore."

They escape through the hole in the wall with the hungry vampires wondering where the sent of humans went to.
