History :
Born to a small family that made their living off of the few herd beasts they managed to keep alive in Nabol Hold, Zalina picked a horrible time to decide to grace the world. She was the seventh child, youngest out of the siblings, and the last her parents were able to have. By the time she was five turns old and with the harvest being so poor, it was only a matter of time before their herd beasts died and the family lost its small amount of income. The mass starvation that spread nearly wiped out her entire family. It was, perhaps, a last ditch effort that Zarvorian and his wife, Ailina, took to try and ensure some of their children survived. They offered their strongest children to be raised and cared for as drudges.
It was not long after this, few weeks at most, that Zarvorian and Ailina died as did several of their children due to malnutrition and starvation.
Drudge life was rough, especially as Pern struggled to survive and recover from the non-existent harvests. But they did, and Zalina proved to be a fighter herself. She was frail and underfed, like most drudges, but she was alive. As well as three of her siblings. However after a two turns, none of them were together any more, having been traded and moved around to different families in need of more drudges.
When she reached the age of 11-12 turns old, whispers were spreading like wildfire around the kitchens about the tensions escalating between Ruatha and High Reaches. There was a slight increase of traffic flow of lower income families coming to Nabol and other holds to avoid the talk of war that came up in hushed voices. Zalina didn't truly understand any of it, not being well educated and only knowing how to clean and go about her duties. She had discovered she liked being of assistance and tended to take on more tasks than she could handle at times.
And then the war they had feared erupted.
It was both a heavy blow and a surprising good grace when Herald the Proud was slain. The Hold suffered with the defeat of its troops, but Lady Ithere was a woman Zalina found herself admiring greatly. She was an intelligent woman who helped her husbands new reign take a firm hold. Being a lowly drudge like herself, Zalina started to feel a strange sense in wanting to be more than she was. She was tired of feeling so terrified of the war. Of the possibility she might starve (though she received a decent amount of food). And, most of all, she was tired of being 'stupid'. Zalina wanted to learn things. To have more options for helping people opened up to her. Which was just fanciful thinking for one like herself.
The Great Dragonplague, as devastating as it was, gave her the idea of wanting to move to the Weyr. She'd heard rumors and whispers about lowly folk like herself having a chance at education - though Zalina didn't believe this - and chances to move up beyond a mere 'drudge'. She did not know anything beyond what the harpers sang about when it came to Weyrs and dragons.
The war frightened her, especially being a drudge. What if she was drafted to fight? She didn't want to fight! Didn't know how. There was no muscle to her frame at all. She could hardly carry the larger pots filled with water! So, she fled from her Hold. Fled with nothing but the clothes on her back and a few tiny morsels of stale bread. She sought out High Reaches Weyr for refuge from the war, offering to help out in the kitchens or wherever an extra pair of working hands was needed. She was put right to work with several others and soon began to make herself a 'home' at the Weyr. Dragons were amazing and huge. Zalina had never in her life seen one so close. Only in the skies. And now she was living around them and their riders - when she saw either. The drudge tended to stick to her work and avoid people. All she cared about was that she felt safe. Zalina was too old to be considered for candidacy, or would age out by the time she took up courses and began learning what it meant to be one.
However it was two turns after she arrived at the Weyr that she found herself wanting to be a candidate. But not for a dragon. Zalina's first experience with wher's had been the scariest most fascinating thing she'd ever been through. She found herself admiring several of the wherhandlers when they stood proud amongst the riders that looked down on them. They were their own unique group and Zalina wanted to be a part of it. She was 25 turns old when she pleaded with the Weyr's recruitment officer to be trained. Who declined the first several times she asked. But Zalina was determined, never having wanted to do something quite as badly as she wanted to do this. Maybe the old man had been testing her, to see how much she truly desired the chance. Or they just got annoyed with Zalina asking. Whatever the reason, she was accepted and began training with the newest candidates recruited.
Basic training was the most difficult thing she'd ever done in her life. Zalina feared she would fail before she truly began. But that determined spark kept her going. Kept her pushing herself to new limits. It was a lot of work and former drudge was not unaccustomed to such work! She found herself enjoying the literacy lessons she took as well as history. Combat training was probably her most difficult as Zalina had never fought anyone or thing before. But just like everything else, she pushed herself to succeed.
And she began to succeed. Zalina had a sharp mind to her that had just wasted away with its lack of education. But she excelled in her literacy and history. She even began gaining muscle tone to her petite body! And when it came to combat, she found herself strongest with a bow. She could easily hunt without feeling squeamish over killing a critter. And she had no issues dealing with the meat afterwards. Needless to say, it was quite a welcome surprise to Zalina when she was accepted into squirehood!
When the day came that she was told her chance to approach a clutching green had come, Zalina felt scared. She ahd worked so hard to get this far. To become the new woman she was. What if she messed it up? What if the green didn't accept her? All these questions filled her head until she realized, none of it mattered. She had set out to become more and she had done that already. So it was with great confidence she approached the green wher and bowed. And was accepted and allowed to choose an egg. Zalina looked them over carefully and picked one up she found herself drawn to. She was 27 turns and she'd done it.
Of course, she had not been expecting to get quite the... interesting brown wher. Zalisk was large, in a sense, and built like healthy solid wher should be. But his legs were... shorter than usual. It made him look awkward (and hilarious in some cases) but from what Zalina could tell, he had no issues moving or doing what was asked of him. In fact, Zalisk was fast. He could speed along the ground much faster than whers his typical size or larger. And he could do it with Zalina riding him too. She took advantage of his speed, working with their hunt and developing their own unique skills.
For the last several turns they have trained and discovered a talent they both enjoyed. They became scouts for their hunt and Weyr, sent in when they needed a quick survey before the rest of the hunt was called forward.

Zalina : Name: Zalina Age: 31 Gender: Female Rank: Wherhandler Appearance:

A petite little thing with shaggy brown hair that used to be longer until she chopped a good portion off due to her inability to get the many turns of knots out. Her face still shows some signs of her turns as a drudge however she has since put on some light muscle over her training. Her skin is still pale in color though no longer holding a sickly quality to it. However working mostly in the evening has not allowed her to gain any tans! She also typically wears clothing that covers most of her body as she is not used to showing much of her skin from wearing rags for too long.
Personality: If there is one thing that can be said about Zee, it's that she's a survivor. All she's known her whole life was how to adapt and survive. She's become rather skilled at this, perhaps her most valued trait being the fact she is very adaptable. This can be to a change in her environment or a change in social standing. She accepts things for what they are and rarely questions it. Unless she disagrees with it, but it takes a lot of effort for her to round up the courage to do this.
Having been a drudge most of her life, Zalina is not very skilled at speaking up. If she feels differently on an opinion, she will most likely say something in confidence to her huntsman before saying anything in front of her hunt. Or any group in general, though she does stick to those with whers. They are her family and Zalina feels most at home when she's got Zalisk by her side with the rest of her hunt nearby. Because of this, Zalina is a little socially awkward when she is around anyone else, except drudges. Being a former one herself, she still feels a connection to them and finds she'll converse easily enough with them. It is also not uncommon to see her and Zalisk resting somewhere while she tells him a story or two. Zalina enjoys being able to talk to him (even if he doesn't always understand everything... or ignores her).
When she is on duty, however, Zalina is a hard worker. She will do whatever is asked of her and she will do it diligently. She is a determined woman, something that grew the older she got and had to deal with everything life tossed her way. Though she does lack coincidence from time to time still, Zalina will just view the obstacle as something new she must overcome and work to achieve some semblance of confidence in the given situation. If this fails, she relies on Zalisk's strength for support. However out in the field, Zalina has lots of confidence in her ability to use a bow. Being as petite as she is, the bow was the easiest weapon for her to master and familiarize herself with. Swords and anything of that nature and size were awkward in her hands. But she learned the bow and is a fairly decent fighter thanks to much patience in her training.
Overall, Zalina is a sweet woman that was dealt a certain hand in life and she rose to challenge it. Succeeded in changing it. And is satisfied with her current status in life. Scouting is her strength. She is good at paying attention to detail and delivering the information she's gained. So long as it's verbal. Writing is not a skill she ever mastered. But she is able to read.

Zalisk : Name: Zalisk Age: 6 Colour: Brown
Appearance: Most of his body is a caramel-coffee colored brown that is offset by his creamy colored belly, which extends up along his snout. He has socks on all four legs in the same color too. Like a corgi, this wher has a body built like his... taller kin, however his legs are a bit on the stubby side. It makes him a little awkward at first glance, but those little stubby legs are powerful! He is fast and tends to move faster than larger whers. However he is on the 'small' side of brown whers, due to his legs being much shorter. He stands at about 13.5hh, rivaling the average sized greens.
Personality: Hyper. Very hyper. When he is awake, Zalisk has to be doing something until he just about wears himself out. He is known for - quite literally - bouncing off the walls when he is on a roll. There are surely a few dents in said walls caused from this wher smacking into them. He is learning to channel this energy into his speed when he runs, however, which helps to level out the overabundance of energy.
For all his energy, Zalisk does not do well when in large groups of whers. He is one that doesn't like having so much competition around and when he feels overwhelmed, he'll snap at the closest wher. Even if it happens to be a huntmate of his. His hunt is typically the only group of whers he can handle being around for prolonged periods of time, feeling that once he has earned his place, it's his place. Even if this is not always true, Zalisk will think so. As such, when other whers get involved, he'll stick close to his handler and try to lead her away from the crowd. Which... he doesn't handle human crowds well either. He is not opposed to snapping at humans to make them get out of the way or keep them from getting too close.
He is also quite the vocal wher. He'll let you know where he is, loudly at times. When he's awake. When he's irritated. Just wanting to be obnoxious. Getting his muzzle smacked happens often and usually doesn't shut him up. Unless Zalina gives him a bone to chew on. His favorite pastime. This wher does enjoy chewing on things. Leather and bones are his favorites. But anything will do at times. Like shoes. Or the sheath to the sword you left laying around.
Strangely enough, this wher's oddity in shape, or rather 'size', doesn't seem to bother him. He doesn't pick fights with other whers over it and his stubby legs don't seem to slow him down either. The only times Zalisk seems to get very angry is when his handler is threatened or the leader of his hunt. To them he is the most loyal, with the rest of his hunt coming in second place. Everyone beyond that... he doesn't really care.
Other: Corgi wher :B
