.... I want to help with this.
But, while I understand the salts thing, it's not quite clear on the number that generates the caches itself. Are you able to edit the number? Or are you merely limited to refreshing? What's the number that will give you closest to a gold cache? What about the others?
I can't help if I'm not fully on the same page as everyone else.
Well, I'm working on trying to understand that.
I'm starting to wonder if the numbers are simply used as a password to accept opening the cache and the actual process of randomizing is hidden.
But, I've seen a pattern over the last 100 caches I opened, 4 of those were gold and 3 of those have a few numbers similar. Coincidence?

Haven't actually tried changing the numbers myself as I'm unsure if that would be considered cheating and against the TOS (or it might just not work at all). This whole idea is a bit on the grey side of being legal or not.

I find that it also depends on the time and day for me? For example if I'm opening caches during the day, I'll get 2 or 3 gold caches in a row. At night I tend to get more platinum and diamond caches. The other common caches are spread out quite evenly (with aquamarine being the most common, then emerald and sapphire etc.) Except Ruby. That thing never comes up for me
sweatdrop If you'd like I could start keeping a log of the caches I open.
Well, since we don't know how caches are decided, more data could only help. (At worst the numbers are just an authenticator and have nothing to do with the process at all, but we won't know that until we investigate it)
