Nothing but debris. The male frowned as he surveyed the scene before him, taking in the rubble that may have once been someone's home. No matter where he looked in this particular area, X found himself being met by nothing but the sight of destruction. A few buildings seemed to have been haphazardly patched up, and though lights from within indicated that people continued to reside in them, he found himself gritting his teeth in both sympathy and frustration. Although it was good that everyone here was carrying on as best as they could, this really was no way to live. These audio deserved homes--real homes--not whatever shoddy, soot-streaked remnants had survived from the fire.

Considering the state that this place was in, he was hardly surprised to have heard that a rebel group had been formed few years prior. Personally, X felt that things never should have progressed to this point in the first place, but it was too late for that. A conflict was inevitable.

Catching something glinting from the corner of his eye, he leaned down and pushed aside a piece that may have once been a part of the ceiling. Removing the object that had caught the light, he swiped his hand over the dusty surface. Two audio stared back at him from within the picture frame, one male and one female. Brother and sister? Lovers? He had no idea, but as he straightened up and gently set the picture down atop the pile of rubble, he found himself wondering where those two were now. Had they moved further into the City near the Tower? Did they find shelter with another family? Or maybe...

With a somber look at what remained of the house, X took a step back.

Curse these god damned rebels. This particular bot had a love/hate relationship with the rebellion and it's movement. On one paw, there was a group of Citizens who had found the will to fight. They stood on their own two feet, refused to accept things for the way they were, and fought like hell to fix things. That was admirable....in fact, it was all Proto had wanted to see in them years ago.

But on the other paw, what they wanted involved his destruction as his current stance put him right in the way of their ideals. For obvious reasons this was something the red general just couldn't accept. Their will to fight came too late, and he was pretty sure when it really came down to it they'd abandon their fight. Again.

No, the only one in this whole forsaken place that had shown him any true determination was Wily. Sure, the guy could be an a*****e at times, but one couldn't deny that he had his ambitions and he stuck to them. Hell, Wily had been the one to put up with his repairs. They had taken...quite some time, and Proto wasn't exactly the nicest bot when it came to being repaired. On more than one occasion he had taken a swing at Wily in an attempt to get out of it. ...But no, Wily stuck to his guns and forced repairs on Proto. Forced. These days he owed Wily his life, and honestly the guy was like a second father to him. (Even if he was a jerk at times ARGH)

More so than he had ever been.

The rebels didn't seem to take too kindly to "Hope" in his new position. Any time he went out without his full on disguise it usually ended with being attacked. Like tonight. There was an explosion from a few streets down, a ball of fire making it's way into the sky. Screams could be heard, as well as the distinct sound of weapon fire.

Then things were...oddly silent. For a moment at least.

The sound of running footsteps. Not dainty mortal footsteps but the kind made by metallic feet. They were definitely heading in this direction. Quickly. In a matter of moments a helmeted form emerged from the path of rubble. The stranger's tail around agitated as the form turned to look back the way he came.

Then cursed loudly and threw his scarf on the ground to stomp out the ends of it. God damn rebels set his scarf on fire. Assholes.

The shroud of calm that had settled over the city today was promptly interrupted by a loud explosion, and photo that X had carefully set upright immediately tumbled back off as the ground quaked beneath him. What the hell was going on? Driven by the sound of shrieking voices, he began to start forward...only to slow in his steps and halt altogether when the city went quiet once more.

No--that wasn't entirely true. Green eyes narrowed warily at the sound of approaching footsteps, and he moved to hide himself in the shadow of a building as the stranger came into view. Dark as it was, he as able to make out the figure with the help of the streetlights and the moon overhead, a flicker of recognition lighting in his mind.

Honestly, after hearing all the stories from the citizens of the red-helmeted figure of Hope that had gone to Wily's side, it was impossible not to recognize the male in his telltale outfit.

Without really thinking about it, X found himself stepping out into the light. Although he was armed, he made no move to lift his arm, instead peering at the other bot with an unreadable expression before his gaze flickered to the scene behind him.

"Was that your doing?"

As X watched, the figure picked his scarf back up from the ground and wrapped it back around his neck. It was going to need washing. Again. The nerve of those rebels! Assholes, the whole lot of them! He had enough of them tonight, no...now he needed to slide his shield onto his back and head to the Tower for some rest.

Or...at least that was the plan, until another's presence was suddenly announced. Proto whirled around with an angry snarl, gun up and ready to be fired.
"Look BACK OFF I didn't do an---"
The words died in his throat, the General actually moving to take a few steps away from X. His expression and body posture read complete surprise. Almost like...he had seen a ghost.

Had one of those rebels hit him harder than he thought?! Must have scrambled a few circuits, no way this was...

...And he looked different?...

"....I see Dr. Light still loves to replace things. Decided you weren't worth his time in your old form and upgraded you, did he?"
There was a lot of hurt in that metallic voice. Proto was quickly covering it up with anger and snarling though.

"-That- was me defending myself. It's necessary these days."

Protoman had not reacted in the way X had expected. The initial outburst of anger was not surprising by any means--that he had predicted--but the sudden hesitation that followed threw the blue robot into confusion. The other male had even put some addition distance between them, a fact that earned a bit of an eyebrow raise from X.

The question that followed did not help alleviate his puzzlement, brows creasing as his green eyes fixated on the other audio. "Replacing? ...Upgrades? What are you talking about?" He stared down at himself, as if to confirm what he already knew: that he had not had any mysterious changes at the hand of Dr. Light. Which meant that maybe...

...Hm.

"That begs the issue as to why it's necessary for you to defend yourself in the first place," Came the murmured reply, his tone simple and matter-of-fact, "Though I think I have a hunch. There's plenty of talk floating around about you, Protoman." He set a hand on his waist, his gaze meeting the other's (or so he thought--it was hard to tell where he was looking behind those shades) as he gestured to himself with his weapon-arm.

"That being said, since there seems like there's something that needs to be cleared up, let me do some introductions first--my name is X."

It's your long lost kinda-sorta brother, Proto! Now you two may dramatically embrace once another!

Oh, but Proto wasn't buying it. Not at first at least. This had to be Rock in some new armor set by Light, correct? Likely buffed up his defenses to be better suited to handle Wily's Army. He must have learned something from sending his first son into battle. He was the prototype after all...a fact which forced an angry grimace onto his maw. He was nothing more than a throwaway experiment meant to improve upon the later generation. A generation Proto was fiercly protective of, despite the constant clashes he had with his brother. The red bot just didn't want Rock to end up like him.

Being the City's martyr was not a fate he wished upon anyone else.

"Oh come on you know who I am, why exactly are you listening to the words of the Citizens?"
But...well then the other's next words came, and Proto was...confused. His brother's name was Rock, not X. And yet this bot stood before him, introducing himself as X.

...He wasn't the same as Rock either. A lot of glaringly obvious similarities, but the differences were there too. Mannerisms couldn't be explained away with an armor upgrade...and desperate as the old Audio was it didn't seem like Doctor Light to meddle with a bot's personality. That was just barbaric.

So what exactly was going on here?

Proto threw a glance back the way he had came. It was quiet back there, either he had chased off those attacking him or...worse. He returned his gaze back to X, lowering his gun but keeping his shield up in a defensive position.

"...So. He built another. It wasn't enough to send me to my death. It wasn't enough to build a second and attempt to send him too. No no, he has to build another...and so closely based on Rock's blueprints."
He wasn't sure how he felt about that. There were similarities between he and Rock as well but for the most part they were vastly different. This X character on the other hand...

"Well...X. I see you already know who I am, though I am curious as to just what the Citizens have told you. Is it stories about how I am death waiting in the shadows? About Hope being dead and only destruction remaining? Or perhaps it is how I just sit in the Tower as Wily's precious lapdog. Surely it can't be the truth that they have told you."

Kaiyumi
galkmalkga oh god the slow dramatic running towards each other to hug, and then the awkwardness of gun arms and a shield getting in the way.

He waited quietly, patient as realization settled in and it soon became clear that he wasn't whoever it was that he had been mistaken for. His expression had smoothed out into something unreadable, but there was the faintest furrowing in his brows at the other male's words. To be completely honest, X had been awakened with little knowledge of...anything, really. What he knew of his history had been what meager amounts of information he had been given, and the topic of predecessors had--to put it bluntly--not been among the most important things that he had to know.

But now here he was, face to face with someone whose development and creation had ultimately been a stepping stone to his own figurative "birth". This was something that he realized and acknowledged--without Protoman, he himself would not be here today--but that wasn't to say that he felt any sort of guilt that he had been made. Although it appeared clear that the red-helmeted audio held some sort of bitterness towards Dr. Light, the thought of he himself being improved upon and replaced one day just seemed...natural.

Sad, but natural.

Choosing not to actually say anything on that matter, X gave a little shake of his head. "I've heard all of those things, and more," He replied, mouth turning downwards in a frown, "But if none of that it the truth, then what is? While we're here, I'd like to hear the answer come from your own mouth, Protoman. I'm here neither to join Wily or to join the Rebels, but I would loathe to have to go up against you if the necessity arose."

Demy-Stardust
At least Proto just has a shield and not like, a giant force field.

.........../lost it @ mental image of X being sent flying back upon running at Proto for a hug ("BROTHER WHY DON'T YOU LOVE MEEEE")
PostPosted: Mon Apr 21, 2014 8:52 pm

That...was not a conversation Proto really wanted to dive into anyway. There was nothing wrong with improving upon something to make it better. But...no matter how natural it may be Proto would never be okay with being replaced. There was a certain responsibility one took when creating robots with thoughts and feelings like those of mortal Audio. A normal parent would not simply replace their first born when new pups were born. So why should it be okay to simply replace a robot when they became obselete. Was he not still functioning? Did he no longer count as family? He was alive, he had -feelings-...and those feelings dictated that he'd never happily accept being replaced.

But he would acknowledge that those that came after him were likely built superior. That was natural.

He eyed the other for a few moments. Why...should he sit here and tell his story again. Was it really going to change things? Did anyone -really- believe his side of things? Hrm? Yet...this bot was made by Light. And despite how he felt about that...

It made him family.

So Proto moved to return his shield to his back, and stepped a bit closer to X. He took up a position perched on a pile of rubble, his scarf flappng behind him in the breeze.

"They'd have you believe that Hope simply abandoned them to their own demise. But...I ask you, if that's the truth then why do they linger? Why have they not moved on to somewhere that offers them more? They have every opportunity to leave, and yet they do not. They don't even try. The truth is, they are happy living this way."

Actually he was moving into more of his history before bothering to give X a chance to respond. Sorry X, this was a rather heated topic for the General.

"I was their Hero. They cheered me on, they looked to me to vanquish the night and return their City to what it had been before. They stood by my side...until I needed help. They don't want to fight. They just want a Hero they can cheer on and then watch fall. Then they are content in their surroundings until another Hero makes his rise and it begins anew."

That metallic echo was getting quite prominant in his voice as he continued on. Currently, though his visor held an even level with X's gaze he was actually staring at the ground. Why had he fought to 'fix' the City? This was the only version of the City he had ever known. What if this state was actually -better- than it had been before?

"It took a year to repair me."
It....had been rather extensive damage.

Kaiyumi
*cannot stop laughing at that mental image, thank you*

X kept his mouth clamped shut as Proto spoke, deciding it was about time he got the other half of the story that was floating around here. Excluding the fact that he had just learned that this red bot was essentially family, X found that he seemed...well. Certainly not friendly per se, but definitely not as hostile or nearly as horrible of a figure as some had led him to assume. It was only fair that he listened and drew his own conclusions about this whole matter by the end of it.

Again, his expression remained static for much of the story, shifting only when it was revealed that it had taken a full year to repair the other male--although the look in his eyes was hard to read, it may have been some kind of sympathy, though the creases in his brows betrayed the fact that the news troubled him.

"I'm sorry." The apology was short and simple, though it appeared to be genuine. Folding his arms over his chest, X frowned as he continued, "Though that being said, there's one thing you didn't tell me: why are you still here? Why are you working with Dr. Wily?"

"And you say that they're happy, but I'm not so sure. Who could be happy living in chaos like this? The fact that a rebellion group has started up seems to be a testament to this displeasure." Maybe they weren't leaving for a different reason--maybe they were just afraid, or lost. It made sense to him that the citizens would look up to a hero, particularly if they themselves felt cowardly or unable to do anything in this place.

"Some of them, at least, are attempting to make a change. You have to admit that much."

"I suppose with all the things said about Dr. Wily it's impossible to see just why I stay here with him."
Really, the citizens would have anyone believing that Dr. Wily was nothing but a grade a douchebag. And....well on some occasions he was. Proto wasn't going to lie to himself and say he always agreed with Wily, or enjoyed his company. But still...

"Dr. Wily is the only one who spared a second glance to a broken bot in the streets of his City. He is the one who repaired me when everyone else had given up on Hope and returned to their homes. I was sent here to destroy his work and tear down everything he's built. Yet he took me in. So really...who is the bad guy to this story?"

As for why he didn't just leave the City....well, sometimes he really wanted to. But Proto was not a bot who could survive entirely on his own, no matter how much he truly wished he could. His body needed maintenance more often than the others....a fact he was not thrilled about in the slightest. Hence his silence on that matter.

"There has always been a rebellion...they come and go. So yes, I can see that some are not content in this life...and I encourage them to stand up and fight. I would love to be proven wrong. I just doubt that day will come."

Yes, it was indeed rather unbelievable to X that Proto would have ever gone with Wily. As such, he was all ears as the other audio began to recount his personal reason for having gone to--what many others considered, at least--the "enemy's side". Arms still folded, he drummed his fingers against his upper arm while his frown deepened ever so slightly. Well, that made a lot of sense, he supposed. He couldn't exactly fault Protoman after all that the other had gone through and the fact that it was Wily who had taken him in, but at the same time? It still didn't quite sit right with him either--not completely, anyways.

"I wouldn't go so far to say that he isn't a bad guy though," X retorted, his tone somewhat dry, "Just because he showed you kindness doesn't make him a good person--or one without potential ulterior motives." Of course, he was sure that Proto had already considered such a thing.

He lift and dropped a shoulder in a half-hearted shrug, only for his mouth to quirk upwards in a faint, tight smile at his comment about the rebels. "And if the day does come? If they finally decide to fight back and take back the City? What would you do then?"

Not to mention the sheer number of casualties and other such incidences that would occur if this rebellion were to go on and grow in size and energy! X himself felt more doubtful that this wouldn't end up escalating.

"And I wouldn't go so far as to say the Citizens are the good guys just because they have decided they aren't content."
Really now, there was a time that if the Citizens needed something Wily provided it for them. He took care of his City! It could be said that in recent times this wasn't -as- true...but Wily was quite busy having things rebuilt from the devastating fire.

One that he did not set, or order to have set.

He had fallen rather silent at X's question. What would he do? Proto shifted his shoulders, adjusting the shield that rested on his back. Hope Rides Alone. Right? So if the day finally came. If the Citizens finally stood their ground and fought for themselves like he desperately had wished they'd do during his original fight...well, where would the first Son of Light fit into this story? These days he was loyal to Wily and his cause. The Citizens didn't deserve their freedom, they had grown far too dependent on Wily and his robots to live their lives. But was that all really -that- bad? They were provided things...unless they spoke up against Wily. Then, well, they weren't....unless a worse fate was in store for them Some days it didn't sit right with Proto, but a lot of things the Citizens did didn't sit well with him either.

"If that day ever comes, I am going to wager a guess that it'll be you or Rock leading their charge. And, should they actually fight -with- you, and not abandon you..."
Proto frowned slightly, turning his gaze down the street rather than face being stared down by X.
"Then I will wonder just why I wasn't worth fighting for."

True. X remained quiet, mouth twisting into a grim frown. He wasn't going to claim that Wily was evil and the citizens were all good--as he saw it, black and white morality wasn't something that existed. Honestly, he could probably come up with numerous pros and cons of both sides, but that really wasn't a productive use of his time right now. He was admittedly much more interested in this Protoman figure--or he supposed...in some weird, twist of fate, his "brother".

In a way, anyways.

The male's green eyes lit up in surprise at the other audio's words, but he glanced away a moment later, brows creasing. "I'd rather...not get involved if I don't have to. I haven't been here that long and I'm already tired of seeing all this conflict." Though he didn't really look like it, X was a pacifist at heart. He knew that sometimes fighting was necessary to achieve, but he wished it wasn't.

There was a long pause, and then he shifted uncomfortably. A part of him wanted to offer Protoman some sort of words of reassurance--he was, after all, family--but at the same time...he wasn't exactly the most eloquent bot around.

"I'm sure it...wasn't...uh, you. I mean, well...uh..."

Smooth.

"There is very little besides conflict around here these days. It gets...tiring, but I don't know any other way. There are days I just want to disappear into the streets and be alone...but lately that hasn't been much of an option."

Likely it had been what he was -trying- to do tonight, before he was attacked and led to this little meeting here. He supposed it was some sort of blessing in disguise, it was always nice to know he had more family. Well....not nice to know that Light was still actively replacing him, but beneath all the snark and growling he did actually like his brother Rock. X....well he was still on the fence on X. But so far it was a grudging acceptance.

Still damn weird though.

"No...it's them. They won't stand, they won't fight. Not for themselves, they want a Hero to save them but they don't want to put in the effort. Not many of them do, at least."

Proto hopped down from the rubble he had perched himself on, looking off down the street for a bit before turning his gaze back to X.

"....Just be careful, around here. Those you wish to help are simply leading themselves to their own demise. I don't want you to find that out the way I did."

It...was honestly concern he was showing, which was very rare for the red bot to display to -anyone-.

Although X could not claim that he fully empathized with Proto--claiming so would be an insult to the other, considering he had never been in the same shoes--he could at least sympathize. This constant conflict...well, "tiring" really was probably the best way to put it. Frankly, he didn't think anyone really wanted to fight, but that was apparently the method of choice by many when it came to achieving their goals. Dominance by power.

He didn't like it.

Then again, that was just how this world was sometimes. "I suppose we'll see where it goes from here then," X mused quietly, drumming his fingers on his other arm, "Because if there's no hero to save them--no crutch to lean on--then they're going to decide for themselves how to proceed."

He fell into a brief, startled silence then upon hearing Proto's words of warning, particularly because they just sounded so...genuine. Was he really worried? For a moment, the male wasn't sure what to say, and then he unfolded his arms and moved forward to give the other's shoulder a small, casual nudge with the back of his hand.

"Yeah, you too. For what it's worth, watch out out there. Take...er...take care of yourself. Please."

Although X was in no doubt compassionate, actually voicing such things sentiments--and to a kind-of family member who he was still not fully comfortable around, no less--actually flustered him. Hastily withdrawing his hand, he continued walking forward, leaving what had been a temporary bit of peace to step back into the chaos.
