DBN / "Robots"
The resident slipper scientist has been known to bring in some "robots" during our melodious picnic adventures. But she's a spelltechnician, a specialist that sits betwixt the magical and mechanical. To understand what her "robots" are, we need to first analyze what the mechanical and magical counterparts are respectively.
What exactly IS a robot?Webster Dictionary defines a robot as:
"a real or imaginary machine that is controlled by a computer and is often made to look like a human or animal".
In addition,
Dictonary.com defines it in scientific context as
"A machine designed to replace human beings in performing a variety of tasks, either on command or by being programmed in advance".
On a basic level, this implies that robots do not inherently have free will. This is reinforced by root word for robot, "robo", in Czech words:
* robotnik (slave)
* robota (forced labor, compulsory service, drudgery)
* robotiti (to work, drudge)
from an Old Czech source akin to Old Church Slavonic rabota (servitude)
However in the world of Gaia, robots are often implied to be mechanical opposed to magical. For the magic equivalent, we need to define what a golem is.
What exactly IS a golem?Webster Dictionary defines a robot as:
" an artificial human being in Hebrew folklore endowed with life".
Jewish Virtual Library adds context by stating,
"In Jewish tradition, the golem is most widely known as an artificial creature created by magic, often to serve its creator. [T]he Talmud uses the word as 'unformed' or 'imperfect' and according to Talmudic legend, Adam is called 'golem', meaning 'body without a soul' (Sanhedrin 38b) for the first 12 hours of his existence."So while there are similarities between the two, the differences are mostly contextual and how they operate. Technological or Supernatural, both meant to serve their creator with no real will of their own.
What exactly ARE Berkana's "robots"?If I were to sum it up in a single phrase: "Spelltech Familiars". They are extensions of Berkana herself in a physical form, each designed for specific purposes. And like a normal robot or golem, they are not sentient.
As you may expect, Berkana's "robots" are neither completely mechanical nor completely magical, but a fusion of both. These mystical machines are powered by Berkana's will and mana, though they also have pre-programmed parameters for specific purposes. Since they are not limited to electric or nuclear power since they can interface with magic, they are able to bend the rules a bit of their physical limitations. Unlike other spelltech, they can only accept commands from Berkana herself since it requires higher mental processes than traditional tools. Think of Berkana a computer's operating system, and the "robots" as specialized programs partitioned for specialized tasks. For that reason, they are collectively referred to as
Doctor
Berkana's
Numbers.
Doctor Berkana's Numbers (DBN)This has been an inside joke until now. Because I don't actually want to keep a consistent list, the DBN have not been named in the order they were created. Keeping with mad scientist logic, the numbers are letter alternatives on a telephone keypad. Other times the numbers relate more to 1337 (leet speak). Just for neatness though, I'll list them numerically.
