Inventory

I'm convinced somebody is moving my things, possibly the person who is fetching this journal out of its locked draw every so often and putting it back in back to front. Did you really think I wouldn't notice? Cretin. In any case, here is a summary of the important items that should be in here. I will be checking. If I ever find anything missing or out of its proper place I will discover your identity and when I do, well, I refer you to the threat on the first sheet of this book.

Don't think I won't.

Bookshelves - Covering each wall of the office, all of them are full and neatly organized except the one to the left of my desk, of which the top shelf is only half filled. Do not move or remove my books, or scrolls, or papers, or indeed any other items you may find on the shelves.

Desk -Neatly organised thank you so much, it's hardly my problem if you don't understand my filing system as you try to read my papers upside-down from the other side of the desk. What? If you're reading this, I know you're one of the ones who tries. It is also not my problem if you still don't understand when you come around to my side of the desk while I'm out to rifle through my papers and read this journal. Do not move the desk, not even one inch to the left to see if I notice. I will notice.

On another note I accept no responsibility if Vena Cava bit you, you shouldn't be here in the first place. If Aorta bit you, you must have done something terrible and I have even less sympathy for you.

Good books/Bad books

I hardly need a reminder of my opinions on people but recording them is satisfying and I suppose it could be interesting to look back over should my opinions change over time.

Alina - Masterstarsmith - Some things can never truly be expressed to somebody you don't share a mind with. I try though. For the purposes of this journal suffice to say she is brilliant, funny, steadfast, kind, terrible, and beautiful. I can't imagine my life without my wife in it; I would be lost without her.

Aleck - Journeyman smith - I could not be any more proud, nor love him more than I do. I miss having him around but had he lingered here he would have been pressured into candidacy, not what he wants or what I want for him. I must make time to visit more.

Rensoua & Kyoth - Weyrling - My former squire and her brown bondmate. She is arrogant, wilful, rude, stubborn and foolish. I love her very much, she has become as a daughter to me and I would do anything for her. She is of course brilliant too - she would have to be for me to like her so much - and full of grand ideas. I hope that having squired to me doesn't hold her back from chasing those dreams for too long.

Aeglentine - Candidate - Seems to be struggling a bit. She's clearly well bred, probably from money. Head in the clouds, thought that perhaps I could read minds. Berath wants me to keep an eye on her.

Journal entry log

The seemingly insignificant can turn out to be important in the long run.

4/4/3/4/P6

Well, she graduated. I'm glad she wasn't delayed, sorry she didn't get into a combat wing like she wanted, and glad that she didn't get into a combat wing like she wanted. She's safer than she would be but she's not happy and that's because of me: if she'd had a decent squiremaster she would have had experience in the field, extra combat training, an advocate, and so much more. I don't blame myself for all of this, but I do blame myself for it and I am aware that that makes no sense whatsoever or then again that perhaps it does.

She's R'soua now though and even if she hasn't got quite where she wanted right away she is on to a new chapter in her life. I am very proud of her but I do miss the days of her candidacy, we had more time together then. Such is the way with children, they grow up and make their own lives and that's as it ought to be. I am proud of her and she had grown so much in so many ways, though she had plenty more growing to do in some.

I wonder now if I ought to have refused to mentor her any longer back when she asked Venk to reassign her, it would have been better for her career probably. Would it have been better for her though? Another rider wouldn't have loved her as I do, might have trained her sword arm better but wouldn't have been able to give her such opportunities to expand her mind as my books and our rambling discussions did. I wasn't thinking so logically at the time of course but I think, I hope it was all for the best. She will move up through the wings if she still wants to once she is settled, I am sure of that, and perhaps having started lower down will benefit her should she ever come into high office. Certainly having worked in a number of wings can't hurt her.

Enough about that however, on to the business of the day.

3/2/10/4/P6

...patient presents pain in both the injured and the uninjured eye along with redness, sensitivity to light, and watery discharge. Moderate fever also present. None of my books mention a case such as this, however I was able to find four anecdotes of similar symptoms in the archives of Healer Hall. All followed a unilateral eye injury, and in all cases a resulting infection seemed to spread to the second eye.

In all but one of the cases the patients lost all sight in both eyes. Though it is an extremely small sample size I can only conclude that prognosis for my patient is not promising. I will continue to bathe her eyes, try different things, and hope for the best as it seems there is little else I can do.

I will however write up a detailed report of her case, and what I have learned from the other accounts I have gathered, to present to Healer Hall for distribution to Masters around Pern.

For all the good it will do.

What is more terrible than to know what will happen to your patient and yet find yourself powerless to prevent it? I will try, try everything, try things that make no sense but I cannot help but feel the futility pressing down upon me. Why must there be so many things in the world that we cannot fight? How can I tell a young woman, a newly Impressed rider, that she may very well lose her vision? Should I lie to her, or at least keep the truth from her so that she has hope, or should I prepare her for the worst?

I don't know.

I don't know.
