Custom: Semi Character Name: Isolde Amsel Race: Dovaa Gender: Female Clan: Undecided (Will become Aiskala.) Class: Battler
Appearance: A little taller than average, but not by much. Light blond hair, with slim, antler-like horns that sweep back. Light pastel blue scales.
Clothing- Fond of long-sleeved tunics and leggings, but not adverse to dresses. Likes a thin lining of fur, and always dresses warmly. Clothing of good quality, but nothing too fancy. Prefers shades of blue, brown, grey, and the occasional purple or green. (The artist can pick whatever they'd like as long as it fits the general description.)
Personality: Quiet- Isolde prefers to keep her cards close and only speaks her mind when she feels obligated to. If it's none of her buisness, she won't get involved unless she feels that she has to; and she doesn't understand nosy people. In fact, she finds nosy people to be among the worst annoyances there are, right behind sudden loud noises while reading. It is important to note that while she is quiet, she is not shy by any means and is more than happy to voice her opinion in matters that directly affect her.
Sense of Moral Duty- The only way Isolde will become involved in something that isn't her business is if it would be overwhelmingly immoral not to. For instance, if someone is kicking a defenseless puppy for no reason. If someone is in a potentially dangerous situation and they have done nothing to deserve it, she will try to intervene. That doesn't mean she'll stick around long after, though.
Curious- Despite being so quiet, Isolde is genuinely curious about the world and people around her. She's never left the Celestial Plane, but plans to as soon as she's able. She wants to see the world, travel it, understand it... She'd just much rather learn from written accounts and first-hand observation, rather than asking around.
Aloof- Though considerably warmer to family and friends, Isolde's quiet and naturally distant nature often gives the impression that she is purposely aloof. It's not that she thinks she's better than everyone else it's just that she is, she just prefers to keep to herself in unfamiliar environments with unfamiliar people.
Stress Bottler- Isolde prefers to deal with stress and frustration by not dealing with it until she absolutely has to. She'll push it to the back of her mind and keep on going, and no one is the wiser until she snaps. The result of this is that she is prone to seemly sudden fits of anger or petty unfairness, as even the smallest of things might be the straw that breaks the camel's back. She usually feels pretty guilty later, and will try to make amends (unless she just really hates you).
White Liar- If she doesn't know you and she knows she'll never see you again, Isolde has no problem... Enhancing the truth. Just a little, no real harm done. (If she were to be caught in a 'white lie', she would be extremely embarrassed and ashamed no matter how small the lie.)
Biography/Background: Family: Itzel Amsel- Isolde's mother, a Peisio Dovaa. A natural healer and stubborn as a mule, she only gives up on those who give up on themselves. She owns a three-floored building in the Astral City, with the ground floor being reserved as a small private practice for her to recieve patients and the two upper floors being used as living space for her family.
Indras Amsel- Isolde's father, an Aryala Dovaa. A civilian messenger, a kind soul who isn't around as much as he and his family would like. He met Itzel through his boss, her father.
Nikola Amsel- The oldest brother, and firstborn, an adult Firani. Headstrong and passionate about bettering himself, Nikola became a warrior and left the Celestial Plane to hunt dragons. Isolde has only met him a handful of times, but has heard wild tales about him from the twins. He returns home once a year, to watch the tournament.
Horace Amsel- Twin of Kan, a young adult Firani. He is the calmer of the two, but that really isn't saying much. Like his twin, he idolizes Nikola.
Kan Amsel- Twin of Horace, and also a Firani. A natural prankster with a taste for petty vengeance.
Ramsel Amsel- Indras' father. Was killed while dragon hunting when Indras was just a boy.
Gwen Amsel- Indras' mother, a Ysali. Working as a seamstress, she was able to put food on the table for her two boys after the death of her husband. After his death, however, she became a shell of her former self. Once Indras left her house to marry Itzel, she no longer wanted anything to do with him.
Orion Amsel- Indras' older brother, a Gaili. Left home in a blind rage after learning of his father's death and was never heard from again. There have been rumors that someone matching his description has been seen hunting dragons with Nikola, though...
Liam Neren- Itzel's father. Deceased.
Marielle Neren- Itzel's mother, and one of Isolde's primary caregivers. A sharp but kind old woman, who uses the raising of her granddaughter to keep from dwelling on her husband's death. When she isn't busy looking after Isolde, she helps Itzel run the practice.
Background: A young soon-to-be Aryala with a love of motion but a noted lack of appetite for battle, Indras was the perfect candidate to become a civilian messenger. From an early age he ran errands for his neighbors, earning he and his family a little extra coin. It wasn't that the Amsels were poor, exactly... But a few more coins never hurt anyone, and it was a way to keep the energetic youngster out of both trouble and the house. No one was surprised when he chose the Aryala clan when he came of age; and by the time he was fifteen he had a legitimate job as a messenger, working under one Liam Neran. Now, running around the city all day, every day, is most definitely not easy on one's legs; and the wellbeing of his runners was a serious concern for Liam. As both his wife and only child were Peisio healers, it was only natural for him to make arrangements for those in his employ to receive free care from the family practice. All of his workers were required to get a medical evaluation twice a year and arrange for immediate treatment of injuries acquired on-the-job.
... Of course, after befriending the lovely Itzel Neran, Indras suddenly became much more accident-prone. Worried that he would lose his job should her father find out, Itzel pretended not to notice Indras' silly attempts to catch her attention as more than a friend; and for several years they were no more than platonic friends. A rather dense man, Liam never noticed the two drifting slowly closer.
But Marielle Neran was a sharp mother hen, and one with a very good intuition. She saw what was going on between her daughter and the runner-boy; and knew that while he may not have been the spouse every mother hopes for their child, the two had the potential to have a very happy life together. So one day over dinner with her small family, she suddenly told her husband what a charming young man Indras was, and how cute he and Itzel were (much to the embarrassment and indignation of her daughter).
Two years later, the couple were happily married and awaiting the birth of their firstborn child.
Nikola was a handful of a toddler, and eventually grew to be an imaginative and mischievous boy. He became infamous in the neighborhood for playing harmless pranks, and formed a small pretend 'guild' of 'chivalrous knights' who ran around getting even with those they didn't like, utilizing conveniently placed pails of water and gooey messes of who-knows-what. When the twins were born four years after Nikola, their older brother quickly became a powerful role-model once they were old enough to tag along. Their mother didn't really approve of their antics, but it was easy to slip past her: she and their grandmother did have a full-time job running a practice, after all. If he caught them out on the streets during one of his errands, Indras gave them a light scolding to appease his wife (but secretly thought their little gang was kind of adorable).
But slowly, Nikola grew dissatisfied with playing pretend. He eagerly watched the tournament every year, cheering for each of the fighters and sulking over those who lost, no matter who they were. He had dreams of going out and making a name for himself as a warrior, of bringing honor to his name by slaying a great many dragons and of bringing peace to the land beyond the Celestial Plane. Being so passionate about fighting led him to choose the Firani clan, and he started training day and night to go out into the world. When he came of age, he said his farewells to his family and left the Celestial Plane. Though he had every intent to return, he wanted to make sure to say goodbye just in case. His parents and grandparents worried over him, he became a legend in the eyes of his brothers. Kan and Horace told each other wild stories about Nikola's supposed exploits and put on small shows for the members of their group of pranksters. When the time came, they both chose the Firani clan almost solely because it was the one their older brother chose.
It was not a month after the twins chose their clans that Isolde was born. Itzel and Indras were delighted to finally have a daughter, though Kan and Horace were slightly disappointed in not having a little brother. A quiet child, her brothers left her alone for the most part; she spent most of her free time sitting in the family practice watching her mother work, helping with small tasks, or reading. Her grandmother and mother were, and still are, the most prominent figures in her life; though she does look up to her father. Liam suddenly passed away from a heart attack shortly after her birth, and Marielle has taken to looking after and teaching her granddaughter to keep herself occupied; Indras, having taken over Liam's position, is now only home in the evenings.
Isolde has been shaped more by what hasn't happened than things that have. Kan and Horace never really included her in their exploits or let her play with them. Since the only other children she knew were those in their 'guild', she just kind of... Gave up. She had a loving grandmother who was more than happy to fulfill her need for friends, and she developed the mindset that she shouldn't bother with other children because they didn't bother with her (this is the root of why Isolde is so quiet.). So she just cooped herself up in the family home/practice and read, which in turn sparked the curiosity to go out and see the things she was reading about when she was old enough.
While she knows that Nikola is her brother, he only visits once a year and Isolde doesn't really see him as family. When she was really little she saw him with the same awe as the twins, because of what the twins had told her about him; but now that she's older and knows most of it is made up or exaggerated she doesn't know what to think of him. When he does visit, it's only to see the Tournament and he doesn't do much more than go through the formalities with her. He might as well be a stranger, but she's okay with that.
Though her family is certain she will choose the Peisio clan and follow in the footsteps of her mother and grandmother, her mother and father have a strict belief that everyone should be allowed to choose their own life path. And just as well, because not only is Isolde far too curious about the world beyond the Astral City, but she also hopes that perhaps the Aiskala clan holds a cure for her unusually low tolerance for the cold...
(At the Apprentice stage, Isolde will start at twelve years old.)
Thoughts on the Great Engagement: The whole thing is naught but senseless violence, but it is not something that is going to end anytime soon. Isolde understands this, and also that if it weren't for the Great Engagement her people would never have been created.
Thoughts on the Magescian Races: Dovaa- As her people, Isolde would trust a fellow Dovaa over any other race. They have faults, as there is no such thing as a flawless mortal, but they are still her kin and she takes pride in her race.
Orderite- As a whole, the mindset of the Orderites weirds Isolde out. The thought that one race can be inheriently more holy and 'good' than others is unnatural, and that the Orderites seem to think that of themselves makes her somewhat wary of them. Her trust is open to be earned, however, by individual members of the race.
Oblivionite- That an entire race of souless mortals was created on purpose is, in Isolde's eyes, an abomination. How cruel, to deny a sentient being something so fundamental as a soul? The very thought or mention is enough to vex her. Despite their lack of a soul (or because of it), she would be quicker to trust an Oblivionite than an Orderite.
Hybrids- Lost souls. Isolde pities them more than anything, since they don't really fit in anywhere. Other than that, she feels she can't really have an opinion of them as a group, since their mixed heritage has the potential to bring forth so many different traits. As she sees them, they are essentially wildcards.
Thoughts on the Dragons and Khehora:
Dragons- Though they are wild beasts, to be feared and respected as such, Isolde feels a distant sort of kinship to the dragons. She believes that dragons are closer to Dovaa than any other species, and admires their wild nature. That doesn't mean she won't fight one if she has to, though.
Khehora- Again, Isolde sees Khehora as very distant kin; only they are kin who aren't to be fought on default. Though she's never met one, she is very curious about them and would be thrilled to meet one.

Gyuh - I really like her! I don't see anything that sticks out as a problem. She seems well thought-out, balanced personality wise, and has some diverse opinions on the races + an interesting motivation behind taking on the aiskala clan. Maybe Robo (or someone else) will have a better critique for you - but she looks good to me!
Good luck. :]

-this is robo-
Looks good, though is there anything that happened to her? The history is mostly about her family, so do you have any events that helped to shape her? What's she think of her brother who left?
Will take another look at it after I switch computer pods. Yup, that's the only question I have :3

Thank you, Uke and robo! <3 Isolde has been shaped more by what hasn't happened than things that have. Kan and Horace never really included her in their exploits or let her play with them.
