The Mauldives Islands, some Friday night...

Hovering over a tiny island somewhere in the Grimdian Ocean, a grinning full moon dominated the night sky. This little island was nearly halfway across the world from Monster High, but thanks to Rory's ability to travel through the Mirrorverse, he and Marceline were there within a few moments. They arrived on the island through a powder room mirror that Rory had located using his magic, not too far from the southern tip of the island. First Rory climbed out, then reaching his hand through the mirror, gently pulled Marceline through. Clutched under her arm was a large burlap tote bag, covered with raffia embroidery that had torn and frayed over the years; it carried a large picnic blanket and some other items just fine, despite its age.

"Looks like the local time is..." Marceline checked her iCoffin, which updated when they touched down on the island. Her eyes widened and she clutched Rory's arm. "5:15AM! Jeepers! I forgot all about the time diff'rence! We don't got much night left t'see what I wanna see with you!"

"Wha-woah!" Rory gasped as Marceline took off in a run, dragging him with her straight to the hook-shaped beach. At this early hour, the beach was all but abandoned; Marceline stood with her arm hooked in Rory's, some fifty yards from the ocean. Her eyes scanned the water in the dim twilight, watching the waves crash against the sand, and her eyebrows furrowed. There was something she was looking for that didn't seem to be there...

"I don't understand..." She breathed. "My r'search on this region suggested that this was the time of year for it... So why ain't it happenin'?"

As if on cue, the next wave heaved over the sand, thinly rimmed with an electric blue shimmer. Marceline's breath wavered at the sight of it.

"Oh my ghoul! There! Did'ya see it?!" She pointed excitedly at the waves, which steadily lapped at the beach. The shimmering blueness grew more prominent with each great wave, until the crashing waves exploded on the swash in bright light like fireworks.

"C'mon, let's go get a closer look!" Marceline grinned, barely containing her hexcitement, as she took Rory's hand and led him to the water's edge.

The sight of the shimmering water dazzled Rory as they ventured close to the water's edge.

He wanted so badly to ask if this was safe. SO SO badly. But he bit his tongue as they reached the very crest of the shore and Marceline plopped down onto her knees for a closer look.

"What is it?" Rory asked, staying standing. Marceline reached into her bag and pulled out her iCoffin to record it. "Magic?"

"Even better!" She hexclaimed. "Science! These are dinoflagellates that use photosynthesis t' bioluminesce when they're agitated-er...I mean, they're algae, of a type, and they absorb sunlight durin' the day. Then at night, when the water moves, they bump against each other n' glow."

There was a moment of silence, filled with nothing but the crash of the waves on the shore as they watched the swirling glow in the water.

"That's STILL magical, to me." Rory replied, sinking to his knees next to her. "We don't have dino, uh, dino-"

"Dinoflagellates!"

"-Those in mirrorverse!" He hexclaimed. "In fact, a lot of nature..well...people don't usually set up mirrors facing the ocean, or fields, or forests...so I thought it was all pretty dangerous out here."

"Well...." Marceline reached over and took his hand in her skeleton hand. "I'm glad you finally decided to come out."

"I am too."
He gave her hand a light squeeze. The water rushed around their knees, swirls of bluish glow pulsing as the water moved.

The navy hue of the sky began to shift into lighter blues as the sun crept over the horizon. Marceline released Rory's hand and swished her fingers through the glowing plankton, watching them sway and swirl in the water... before scooping up a palmful of plankton-glittered water and surreptitiously funneling it into a corked vial from her pocket. She had a few great ideas that a study in biogloominescence could benefit from...

She rose to her feet, offering Rory a hand up.

"C'mon." She smiled. "Let's go set up camp and watch the sunrise prop'rly."
