The movie version of RENT... caused my heart to bleed. The voices were amazing and all, but... I don't know. My latest pet peeve is when I hear people talking about it as just a movie... I have broken into about six conversations between people I don't know about the movie with the comment "IT WAS A STAGE MUSICAL BEFORE IT WAS A MOVIE." stressed

You can't expect the average joe on the street to be intimate with its history (which is pretty complicated when you get right down to it). Besides, I'm sure there are plenty of Wicked fans who aren't aware that it was based on a book (or at least, talk about the show as if the book doesn't exist).

Yeah, you're right. But I overheard two of these conversations after a play... and one was between two members of the cast, which worried me a bit. sweatdrop
I guess what I'm hoping against at all costs is that nobody'll ever have to do a stage production of RENT and hear someone else say "Oh, they turned that movie into a musical?"

*shudder* That, friend, is a frightening thought, which will haunt my darkest nightmares.

Oh, Thicket, that day came, went on vacation in Florida for two weeks, opened a deli in Kansas City, and then came back again. You have no idea how many times I've heard La Cage Aux Folles referred to as "a musical version of the Robin Williams/Nathan Lane movie 'The Birdcage'". People have said the same about RENT, Chicago, and Cabaret.

I think I just pretty much jinxed myself. It happened to me today, not once, but TWICE.

Oh, but what is the world coming to? crying

The average person doesn't pay attention to Broadway. The only one anyone REALLY noticed in recent years is The Producers, and even then, I expect someone out there has no idea it was ever on stage.

That reminds me, the other day I was on a different message board and someone was talking about movie adaptations, and someone was under the impression that the original movie of The Producers was based on an actual play. So that's sort of the reverse of what we're talking about, isn't it?

I just found out wicked has a stop in my town next year. I'm already trying to find a way to get tickets.

I suppose. I know someone who thought the same of Moulin Rouge. This was especially funny because she said it "probably worked better onstage": her polite way of saying "This movie f**king sucks" a sentiment I couldn't agree with more, but I digress.
