Name: Rensoua
Age: Seventeen
Gender: Female
Rank: Weyrling
Appearance: Tall and blocky, the teenager looks like she’s going to grow into something very much like a bear. With jet-black hair that’s - naturally - shaved close, her head is somewhat awkward looking. She has a square sort of face, with dark eyes that are set a little too far apart to look entirely right, and a long nose and thin lips. She isn’t pretty in the slightest, but possesses a kind of confident charm that almost makes up for it. Rensoua is muscular and physically fit, and doesn’t have many scars - barring a long one across her chest.
Personality:
Rensoua is an idealist, with the energy and dedication to these ideals that flourishes in the young. She honestly believes that almost everyone is good at heart, but allow self-interest and their own problems to get in the way of doing what they should know is the right thing.
She wants to be eloquent, but still sometimes trips over her own words or fails to express herself properly - though she never uses one word where ten will do, and appears to love the sound of her own voice. It’s rare that a day will go by without her trying to expound her developing idealistic views to someone or other, and if no-one else will listen, well, it’s just as well she’s got a dragon who’ll cheerfully sleep through her speeches. She adores a good argument, and will happily spend hours going through point after point of minutiae - and although she’s very patient if she feels she’s got some sort of dialogue going, if she thinks she’s being dismissed she can get sarcastic and irritable very quickly. She has no regrets about playing favourites with the people she likes, and will quickly make it evident who she thinks is worthwhile.
Rensoua is very smart, so much so that she might cut herself… and is very much used to other people being stupider then she is. As a result, her arrogance is pretty unbounded. Until proven otherwise, she tends to assume that no-one is as smart as she is… and acts accordingly.
Whatever she feels about someone, she feels it strongly and passionately, and even more so without the depth of experience to give her feelings context. If she says she’ll get something done, it will get done, even if it takes her last breath to do so. This applies just as much to people as it does to things, and she is deeply dedicated to her close friends.
She is always on the move, being both energetic and hard working, and frequently neglects apparent necessities like sleep. She honestly loves to work, and when she’s sitting still it’s usually because she’s nose-deep in papers or hides. Rensoua is a meticulous planner, though this tendency often spills over into obsessiveness - without Kyoth to tell her when to stop, she’s likely to keep working into indecision and irritation, turning back on things she fixed hours ago.
Whatever she is, she’s certainly not anti-social. On the contrary, she’s - when she isn’t working - talkative and and entertaining, full of stupid stories and silly anecdotes… even if this sometimes veers off into preachy self-righteousness. She’s also apparently convinced that she’s Faranth’s gift to men, women, and those who aren’t quite decided yet. Whether she actually believes this is unclear, but she doesn’t usually take herself that seriously.
She frequently refers to Kyoth as ‘that lazy lump’, but always in an affectionate way. Their conversations are frequently long and philosophical, rather then related to any direct practical requirements - Kyoth is the perfect sounding board for new ideas, and is a bastion of good sense. The pair of them are very much a team.
History:
Born in Fort in 186, Rensoua was raised by her harper uncle and his boyfriend - and as far as she’s concerned, those men are her parents, full stop, end of story. Her biological parents were fellis addicts - easier then ever to access near the Healer Hall - and her very early childhood was not what it should have been as a result. On seeing this situation in his first visit in several turns, her uncle simply took the toddler with him when he left. Though they have visited on occasion since, Rensoua is not close to her biological parents.
Her life until she was searched was spent moving around Pern as her father travelled, and she quickly learned when and where her parents were a couple… and where they were decidedly not, and could not be. They eventually settled in Tillek in the aftermath of the civil war, where they had fled as refugees, for a few turns before moving to High Reaches Hold.
She was searched from High Reaches Hold in 198 at the age of twelve, and was initially uncertain - she wanted to be a harper, not a rider! - before being convinced by the man she now happily called father that if she could, she should.
She found boot camp difficult, but perhaps not as difficult as candidates who’d spent their whole lives in hold walls - indeed, she found her size and strength to her advantage, and between that and her intelligence and learning she quickly grew even more arrogant then she had been before. As a result, the candidatemaster found it necessary to find her a squiremaster who could take her down a peg or two. Bereck was the perfect rider, in his opinion - though not in poor Rensoua’s. She was not very pleased at all with being assigned to a rider who had never even served, when she hoped to make a high wing. What was this going to do for her career? Nonetheless, the two gradually warmed to one another, helped along by Bereck’s library, which the teenager plunged into headfirst.
The incident which sealed the deal was the one in which Rensoua gained the scar across her upper torso. Bereck had been called out to air-evac an injured rider, and Rensoua had joined him as his squire - and because he would undoubtably need her help moving the patient. Something went badly wrong, though, and Rensoua found herself attempting to buy time for Bereck to get the casualty into the transport cradle. The inexperienced fourteen turn old was badly injured before help arrived in the form of half a hunt of whers, and spent several sevendays in the infirmary and more then two months in recovery.
During this time, she was presented by Bereck with the egg that would eventually hatch into the little gold Aurata. She did initially try to protest - after all, the egg was worth more then a house, did Bereck know what he could do with that sort of money? And it was for *her*? - but did give in, however the idea of a candidate with a gold firelizard might provoke laughter.
Rensoua Impressed last turn to brown Kyoth: the dragon was one of the last to hatch, something which his rider puts down to his innate laziness, and instead of seeking out Rensoua plopped himself down in the sand and demanded that she came to him. She is seeking a place in one of the higher wings, but accepts that it may not be as easy as asking…
Name: Kyoth
Age: Six months
Colour: Brown
Feel of voice: A mug of hot klah, a sleepy yawn, a feeling of amused detachment.
Appearance:
Kyoth is frankly huge for his colour, coming up to the size of a small bronze, and incredibly bulky. He doesn’t look like he should be able to get off of the ground (frankly he looks like someone strapped wings to a cart) and once he makes it he’s slow and deliberate, with no fancy flying or rapid reactions. On the other claw, he has the sort of muscle a wher would be jealous of: while he might be slow to strike a blow or get moving, when he does move it’s somewhat akin to a seismic event, and a good blow is enough to put another dragon of the fight.
His wingspan is proportionally larger then most dragon’s, to make up for his larger bulk, and he has a thick and relatively short tail, further reducing his maneuverability. It's rare to see his eyes any colour other then a soft green or blue. While he’s growing, his paws are over-large as are his wings: he has tripped over them more then once, leaving a few scars where they have been torn and carefully mended.
His hide is a pale coffee brown, darkening intensely in several places, especially along his limbs – essentially a seal point marking.
Personality:
Kyoth is, generally speaking, a zen dragon. He is unruffled by life, the demands of Rensoua, or… well, most things, and is usually to be found napping in the sun. Everything he does deliberate and thought through, and if he has a real temper no one has ever actually seen it. He is the calm and thoughtful balance to Rensoua’s energy and drive, and does his best to stop her leaping without looking.
Kyoth is a fairly smart thinker, not a doer, and stirring him into action is generally something left to Rensoua, who is one of the few things capable of motivating him into doing anything (the others are food and pretty tail).
The other big thing that motivates him is the chance to point out where people are doing something wrong – he has an amazing and depressing ability to work out exactly where some clever scheme will go wrong. Not that (in the normal course of things) he’s going to do anything about it once he points it out, except perhaps move to a nap spot where the imminent disaster won’t affect him. If people want to be overwhelmingly stupid and careless, that’s their business. He warned ‘em.
While he isn’t an incredibly social creature and generally doesn't seek out company except for a chosen few, Kyoth is a very good listener, and will happily pay attention to the chatter of other dragons, even if his own addition to the conversation is little more then ‘really?’ or ‘So why is that?’ or even ‘She didn’t!’. Still, most dragons seem to be happy with this and the occasional nap buddy. If his favorite smaller dragons are being intimidated, Kyoth does have a good sense of his bulk and will frequently move it so he is close at hand. Not that he's planning to do anything - of course not. He's just there. Supporting. Watching. Threatening. The invitation to come hide behind him is implicitly there, and an attempt to get through him to them would be... unwise.
It’s infrequent that he’s drawn out of his usually laconic style of speaking into the sort of long philosophical conversation he enjoys, and which are usually reserved for his rider – although, admittedly, due to his short memory these are usually the same sort of long philosophical conversations they’ve had before.
He frequently forces Rensoua to take the step back in perspective he needs – his rider can get so het up on the details that she fails to see the big picture, which Kyoth had been considering all along. The pair of them will learn to play good guard bad guard with other riders, with Rensoua playing the unreasonable idealist, and Kyoth the pleasant dragon attempting to persuade his rider into a compromise, although they will frequently swap roles when dealing with holders. Kyoth can rapidly become a snarly demon, with Rensoua obviously making an effort to restrain her snappish and bad-tempered partner.
