Personality: After being released from imprisonment, Despair was now a gentle and warm man. He was passionate yet soft-spoken, and showed the utmost respect to those he addressed, regardless of whether they were his allies or his enemies. He often thinks of others before himself, risking his life to help anyone who needs him. He is a brave and selfless individual who strives to protect the weak and less fortunate, using every bit of power he had. Overall, his current personality is that of a very kind person, having a complaisant disposition. He has genuine concern for others regardless of the relationship, professional or personal, although he knows well how he shouldn't let intimate feelings get the better of his judgment. Despite the bloodstained nature of his work, he doesn't like harming others, much less take their lives. It isn't because he is afraid of killing but rather because he treasures life other than his own. If given a choice, he’d want to spare as many lives as possible. This sudden change in his personality, led many other demons to see Despair, not only as an enemy, but a threat to them and all their kind. There had never been such a demon, with his power and status, that would defy its very nature and become such a dignified and honorable person. After a certain incident in his past, Despair and the Despair that originally existed in the other world, would meet and the two would merge their subconsciousness together, essentially becoming one. Meaning this Despair has all the memories and skills of the one from the other world. After coming to this world, Despair has taken on a personality akin to the originally one, especially when he is around Shira.

Bio (Up to five sentences minimum): Despairs history, is vastly different from his counterpart, Kain. The most noticeable thing would be that he was his own person in this world, in other words, he did not reside inside another mind and body. While the exact details of his life is unknown, what we do know is that he, similar to this world's Divine, was born a human, but that is all we know about his childhood and birth. While still human, Despair would lose both his parents to war brought upon by Lord Death and his DWMA. He would not remember anything that had happened when he was that young, no, one could say that he could remember the pain and agony that he had to endure. This pain caused him to close off his heart to those around him and caused him to be cast off into the slums of the city that they lived in. At that moment, he was approached by an mysterious figure, promising that he will be able to fill that void in his heart. So, in an attempt to do so, Despair gave his soul to the demon exchange for obtaining the powers and body of a demon, this helped him to easy the emptiness inside. He decided to remain in the village, and use his powers to take everything he wanted.
It would be during this period, when he was slowly becoming more and more brutal and savage with each and every theft and beating, that Despair would hear about and see various people that were strong enter and leave the city, as well as their fights against some other demons. In his mind, he could see how fighting his own kind would be beneficial to his search in trying to fill the empty void in his heart. Perhaps fighting and killing his fellow demons was the something he needed. In all honesty, he did not like fighting, but for some reason he couldn't help but to fight and kill. This could be because of how he had lived and died during his human life. Having decided on a life of killing demons, Despair trained using his strange light magic, for countless days and nights, honing his skills and improving his techniques. Most of which he learned on his own and therefore was very sloppy and mediocre at best. After a few years of training, Despair had finally gathered the strength he needed in order to wage war against his own kind.
Ever since deciding to kill his own kind, Despair would become one of the cruelest, savage, and terrifying demons to have ever lived this time in his life, Despair gained the title of the, the Smiling Savage because of his lust for blood and utter destruction and how no matter the circumstances, he would be smiling and laughing. However, a few years after he gained this title, a certain incident would happen, that would cause the demon Despair to change into the person he is today. During one of his battles against a formidable demon, Despair would come across a young novice meister, by the name of Sakuya. He could see the gentleness within the girl's heart and soul and for some unknown reason he decided to take her under his wings, becoming a mentor to the girl. Having Sakuya around, made Despair appear more gentler and over time, as Sakuya grew older, Despair found himself enamored by her. He had hoped that once she was old enough, that the would be able to leave their past, his as a demon and her as a meister and live together.
Sadly, this did not come to fruition. One day while the two were out on a training session together, they would be ambushed by a group of low class demons. During the attack, he and Sakuya fought off numerous enemies, only sustaining minor injuries. However, as the battle seemed to turn in their favor, Despair would become so enthralled in the battle and continue to fight, resulting in more and more demons showing up, as he released more and more of his soul wavelength, acting almost like a beacon. Soon the two were outnumbered 5 to 1. Being a seasoned fighter as well as being trained in various forms of combat, not to mention his strong anti-demon magic, Despair just welcomed them even more, he loved the thrill, but he was unaware of the fate Sakuya at that time. Being so caught up in his own little fight, instead of working together alongside Sakuya, he left her on her own. The inexperienced girl stood no chance and after the last bit of demons arrived, Sakuya had been taken over and subsequently slain by them. If she had not screamed, whose to say that Despair would have even recognized this, but she did and Despair turned to see her, rushing to her side quickly.
As he was surrounded by the enemy, Despair sat there, holding Sakuya in his arms, her body becoming cold and her eyes glassed over. Without saying a word, he shed a single tear that day. Sakuya was his responsibility and more importantly, she was his only friend in the world, but because of his own selfish and prideful ways, she had been killed. As soon as Sakuya stopped breathing, Despair went off into a blind rage, emitting an incredibly powerful and deadly burst of holy light all around him and Sakuya. This would be more than enough to take down a large amount of the demons there, but only more would show up.
In the end, he too would be on the verge of death as there were two many demons there for him to take on his own. Collapsing on the ground next to Sakuya's lifeless body, Despair would look over at her and gently place his hand on her blood covered cheek. In that moment, Despair had accepted his fate, that he would die there. He apologized for dragging her along and not being strong enough to protect her. So, as the hollows all lunged forwards to try and finish him off, Despair closed his eyes and waited for the end. However, just as it seemed as though all hope was lost, Despair would hear a mumbling noise in his head. It was a deep and very regal like voice and it mocked him for giving up and accepting death, rather than trying to atone for his sins. While Despair knew what he said was true, he did not have the strength or rather, the will, to continue on.
"Stand strong and face your problems head on. Never look back or lament over what you could have done, instead, focus on what you can do now. You must live and continue living, not for your sake, but for that of the one whose life you cost. For Sakuya."
The voice would say as Despair continued laying there, but just as the demons reached him, he would smile as the he recognized the voice in his head as that of his own, or rather the voice of the Other Despair that was once a part of the original Atticus. Suddenly, the glowing silhouette of the Other Despair would appear from the sky and seemingly merge with that of this Despair, the two would become one. Upon merging into one, Despair found himself gifted with new-found power and his stamina all but restored. Just as the demons struck, there would be an loud explosion as the impact of all their strikes, caused a large crater to form, but as the dust and debris kicked up by the explosion, died down, they found that Despair and the girl were no where to be found. Just then, the sound of what can only be described as static electricity, could be heard coming from behind them. Looking back, the demons would see a newly transformed, Despair standing there with Sakuya's body in his arms. He had a new look in his eyes, not one of anger and rage, but of acceptance and determination. He had made a vow to himself that he would not let Sakuya's death be in vain, that he would live and continue live for her and her only.
Placing Sakuya's body gently on the ground, Despair fully intended to take down the remaining demons, by himself and then give Sakuya a proper burial. Bracing himself, he waited for the demons to charge in at him, knowing that he had only a few minutes left in this form before it was gone. One by one, the demons ran towards him, each trying to take him down and devour him on their own, but that was a mistake. Despair's strength had been increased and so to was his speed, he would easily dodge their attempts and counter with powerful strikes on his own, incapacitating one of the demons fairly quick. In the end, after about four minutes or so, the only one that stood there was him, soaked in the blood of the demons, while standing over Sakuya's body. Despair had also taken extensive damage to his arms and abdomen, but he didn't care. Taking Sakuya into his arms once more, Despair turned and walked away, as he carried her off towards their home, where he will bury her.
After returning to their home and giving the girl's friends and the citizens, a full report on what had happened, Despair was held completely responsible for the whole incident as well as Sakuya's death. As a result he was stripped of his weapons, possessions, his powers were seal and put on trial for her death. The governing body at the time, unanimously decided that Despair was guilty and sentenced him to two hundred years of imprisonment. Despair chose not to argue or defend himself as he agreed that what he did was unforgivable, so he accepted his punishment. As soon as he arrived there, Despair was cornered by several former comrades that he either knew or was responsible for injuring. Clearly they were not happy with him and sought vengeance, but Despair had changed, he no longer wanted to fight or harm anyone else, this led many to see him as weak and caused him to become a victim of beatings and disdain. Despair would be beaten, teased, tormented and tortured by them, but through it all, he never once fought back, or even showed any signs of anger. He merely laughed it off and smiled, trying hard to not return to his former ways.
Eventually, the other prisoners would grow tired of him and his happy demeanor, no matter what they did, he would never stop smiling, which caused many to avoid him, but also befriend him. During the one hundred years that he was imprisoned there, Despair learned to control his anger and became one the more docile and gentler prisoners, this was a big change in how he used to be, many have noted that there was no intense killing aura around him or any negative emotions, he felt almost purifying. Also, it would be at this time, that Despair grew into a martial arts master, not having his sword or his powers around and not having any other things to do, Despair trained and honed his skills non-stop, he would grow and develop his own style of fighting, utilizing quick and powerful thrusts, but he never once used this to fight back. He had adopted an non-violence approach to things now, no longer was he the naive, battle crazed boy. He was now a peaceful and rather kind pacifist.
After being released, Despair would seek out a way to go to the other world where his counterpart Atticus and the original Despair came from. Gifted with all his memories, Despair wished to be of use to them and also maybe find a way to atone for his sins in this world. He had heard about an group ordered by Lord Death to go and infiltrate that world, seeing this as his chance to help, Despair would find the portal and enter into the alternate world. While he has yet to appear before Atticus and the others, his presence can be felt by those from the other world, such as Ellise and Umbra.
Abilities:
- Divine Light (Primary Use: Offensive Combat) An ability quite rare for a being of madness and darkness like Despair to be able to have. Divine Light gifts Despair the power to wield, manipulate, produce and use not just light energy, but holy/purifying light in various ways. When in use, his light takes the form of tiny particles or orbs of pure light energy, that lingers around his body. The light particles emit an almost soothing and purifying aura around Despair and those he considers comrades, because of this, many demons or beings of madness, keep their distance away from him, since just being in his presence is enough to make even the strongest of opponents sick. The unique properties of this ability, allows for Despair to purify or remove the darkness or evil from a person or objects, often including demons possessing it or mind control affecting it. It can turn evil to good or merely make someone pure. Despair can make this divine light take on a variety of shapes, from small orbs to miniature needle-like objects. He is also seen using this power to convert his very body into light particles and then reflecting it in the air, causing him to teleport. Another passive ability of this, is that Despair can see the electric and magnetic field lines in the environment, even able to sense electromagnetic phenomena. However, he is able to follow the electric and magnetic field lines using his eyes. He also can analyze the reflections of electromagnetic waves they generate and therefore 'see' things all around them as a form of sixth sense, giving him a heightened sense of awareness and lowers the possibility of him being blind sighted. On rare occasions, when Despair is pushed too far, his divine light particles will become tainted, turning black. This also affect its strange aura, as instead of purifying/removing darkness, it instills fear and despair into others, often causing those weak of mind or heart, to become enthralled in darkness, making them go berserk. [Because of this unique ability, any being that is composed of madness, or has an incredible amount within them, will be highly vulnerable to Despair's divine light, weakening their strength for a while.]
Holy Protection (Primary Use: Defensive Combat): Using this ability, Despair is capable of manifesting his divine light as a shield in order to defend against the attacks of the enemy. In order to do so, Despair concentrates his energy and allows it to flow into his hands; which projects a field of light force which he can manipulate into a number of relatively simple forms: rectangular planes, cylinders, globes, domes, cones, etc; it is an extremely powerful form of defense. The complexity of the shape is limited by his ability to imagine, as in, mentally visualize a particular form and keep it in sharp mental focus. The barriers can be very complex and elaborate, or very simple shaped barriers such as circles or squares. These barriers can also hide the presence of the things it coats or even make the target invisible. However, is difficult to use as Despair can only manipulate so many barriers at a time and it requires precise timing. As of now, he can erect and control a total of ten barriers all at once, with varying sizes and functions. [No matter the size or power of the barrier, it can only last for three posts, before having to be redone and it is able to be broken by multiple attacks.]
Demonic Contract: Like any other Demon, Despair has the power to make a contract with any mortal that wishes to. He can give a person a power, an object of power or change nearly any event within their power to something as trivial as transporting them to a location or as simple as knowledge on something. He can take anything from a contracted client be it their powers, emotions, memory, soul or event in their past or future and maybe even someone connected to the client who they can choose to make him or her, his servant. The contract can be fulfilled by doing some task or arduous payment. Of course, Despair can bend the agreement to his own desires limited only by his power and therefore he can change the contracted into a monster as a way to give him or her a power. As long the agreement didn't say he could not perform a certain action their restraints are somewhat relative. Despair can also simply agree to grant the person what they want without telling them what their payment is or when they will pay it. He can only make a contract to two people at a time. [Can only be used on two people at a time. Can not be fulfilled unless Despair himself is satisfied or the contract itself is completed.]
Vacant: This is an ability Despair acquired after many years of training. Due to his immense power and standing as an powerful demon. There are times when Despair is unable to fully control his power. As a result of this, there are occasions when his energy goes haywire and distorts the world around him. To remedy this situation, Despair came up with a technique that allowed for him to create a second "body" out of light, to store half of his power and abilities. Thus this limits what he is able to do and how much power he is able to output. This second body of his, isn't sentient nor can it move or attack. Essentially it is a storage tank for his power. However, the unique thing about this double, is that should Despair find himself placed in a corner, he is able to dismiss the second body, which will cause all of his power to come flowing back into him. Because of this sudden surge of demonic energy, any wound that Despair has sustained, as well as his stamina, will be replenished, effectively restoring his body back into its prime condition, though the strain of absorbing all his power back unto himself, affects his body. However, should his double be attacked and destroyed, Despair will not only take on the attacks himself, but with the destruction of his double, he will forever lose that part of his power. Should this happen, Despair will never be able to obtain that power and will remain in this weakened state forever. [Despair can only make one double, and can only use this move once per battle.]
Skills/Attributes:
- Low Durability/Stamina: Sadly, the many years of fighting, being injured, almost killed, being placed under curses, locked away and going on journeys in harsh conditions, all took a toll on Despair's body and stamina, which led him to be stricken by an as of yet, unknown illness. Due to this, he can not endure much and is easily seen coughing, or short of breath, while in battle. If he uses too much energy or sustains too much damage, his illness grows more serious, causing him to cough up blood and have minor chest pains. However, he still endures it all with all his strength. Many would say the most enduring thing about him, is his will. He has vowed to never let a comrade get hurt of die in his presence again, so even if he, himself, must die, he will not let his comrades be harmed before his eyes.
Master Hand-to-Hand Combatant: Despair is an extremely proficient and some would say, master unarmed fighter, which is quite surprising, due to his very frail and weak physical appearance. There is no sign of any muscle tone or any sort of definition. He is able to incorporate his own light energy into his offensive-style of punches and kicks. When utilizing hand to hand combat, his fighting style focuses on direct, brutal, unrestrained and powerful punches and kicks, in order to dispatch his foe as quick as possible. With his speed, he can disable an opponent through the force of his blows alone, while leaving them at the mercy of his incoming attacks. Due to his many years of combat experience and time on the battlefield, Atlas has a very large degree of physical strength, most commonly displayed by his ability to fight back his opponent's attacks with a single arm. From being able to fight off a massive hollow by kicking it through a building and slamming it over his shoulder with one hand in battle.
Genius Intellect: Perhaps his greatest and most fearsome trait is his genius level intellect. He is well-versed in the history, strategy, and tactics of the world, and is privy to knowledge unknown to many. He has been shown to be an extremely intelligent and cunning strategist. He is able to deceive and manipulate others around him in different ways for a variety of purposes; He has a great talent for analyzing and observing everything in his presence, allowing him to quickly understand a person's pattern of thinking and better manipulate them. He is also a master strategist, capable of formulating well-thought-out plans several steps ahead of others. These plans are incredibly involved and detailed, and are planned out with the long term in mind, making them seem slightly convoluted. He has also shown himself to be a masterful and flexible tactician, capable of adjusting seamlessly to any given combat situation, if not planning out events well in advance. He understands the strengths, weaknesses and mannerisms of his enemies, and creates strategies to achieve victory.
Vast Madness: As a really old and powerful demon, Despair has a rather immense amount of madness within him. However, when in battle his madness and energy is exerted quickly, which makes him unable to participate in prolonged battles. Or course this does not stop him from doing so, should he have a good enough reason to fight. In the past, he could only use his powers for a maximum of thirty minutes in a day before he needed a significant amount of rest, but now, he can maintain it for hours. In short, while he has an incredible amount of madness, he can not utilize it fully in battle, properly, severely limiting the amount of time he can fight. Even still, his madness is different from most demons, while theirs invoke fear or insanity into others, his seeks to neutralize that and bring about a calming, more purifying air.
Enhanced Speed and Reflexes: As speed and maneuverability is an intricate part of his fighting style and overall combat ability, Despair has worked non-stop to increase his speed. As of now, he possesses tremendous reflexes, agility and speed; which, usually enables him to dodge many powerful projectiles and other attacks, in rapid succession. This, coupled with his incredible talent with wielding and controlling light, makes Despair, quite possibly one of the fastest beings in existence, of course, this does not mean that he is too fast to be seen or caught, it is just that his opponent will need to be able to reach and sustain his level of speed, which not many can do.
