NAME: Reese Vaughan ALIAS: Reese's Pieces AGE: 17 (born 10/26/97) GENDER: Female AURA: PURPLE & YELLOW; a tight outline around her body that emanates more around her head and heart. POWERS: Empathy, Aura reading, Intuition, Hypnosis (Listed from most skilled to least skilled)
APPEARANCE: Reese is a slight girl with thin lips, a straight nose, light purple eyes, and dirty blonde hair that reaches far past her shoulders, which she typically wears up in a high ponytail. Her style of dress and features tend to read as either 'moodless' or 'unimpressed,' though she is typically neither of those things. She favors wearing comfortable, baggy clothing, like a long skirt with a slightly oversized wool sweater and dress shirt. She typically keeps her reading glasses perched on her head, as if they were sunglasses, and is typically seen with a pair of large headphones and a laptop.
PERSONALITY: Reese Vaughan’s life is heavily centralized around her abilities, as their early fruition heavily affected how she saw and interacted with the world. Her psychic abilities and studies are her most valued items, as much of the respect, interest, and self-value she’s accumulated over the years has directly correlated to her insight and empathy. Due to this, it’s devastatingly simple for others to offend or personally insult Reese, as they could criticize her control of her abilities and the mistake she’s made in the past due to them. As a consequence, Reese has a very guarded heart, as pride could get the best of her.
Despite her conscientiousness around others, Reese can nevertheless impose a persona of open-mindedness and great flexibility. To truly drawl in and study people’s emotions to their most genuine and fullest extent, Reese is able to reserve her own opinions and regards around others. Her hard-earned passivity, however, has led to Reese unintentionally adopting a silent persona—she is used to listening to people first, and is unequipped to talk to others about her own merits, feelings, and opinions.
Of course, Reese is a growing teenager—she isn’t sure if these merits, feelings, and opinions of hers are worth an ounce of salt at all. The pride in her abilities to analyze people combined with her self-doubt in social situations is an awkward one, and Reese is going about it with relative unease. The only way she can adapt to groups well is if she completely immerses herself into other personalities, and adopts the opinions and thoughts of others. In low-energy situations, Reese’s adaptive personality can serve her well in a conversation, as it lends her just enough insight to get through the situation quickly, but high-energy situations can leave her feeling like an awkward salad of personalities and mindsets. The amount of effort she’ll put into adapting to a situation widely depends on the group involved, though, and how much Reese considers you a good use of time— if not, Reese will remain an observant, albeit eerily quiet girl, who is personally detached from the situation at hand.
Weak social acumen aside, Reese draws her confidence from other areas of her life. She is incredibly dutiful to understanding others, which often involves helping them or leading them in the right direction. The position of student assistant is incredibly important to her, as Reese realizes the misuse of her abilities can be atoned for, so long as she offers her part to the psychic community. Reese’s determination in being a good role model to other psychics may not be evident in her awkward personality, but is translated instead through her exemplary understanding of the Academy, its course material, and how individual students may be struggling.
Before Reese had a chance to enter the academy, the girl was often seen as glum or otherwise disinterested in daily activities. Reese is slowly emerging from her depression, though, and is more than enthusiastic to shower in her own individuality and happiness. This may lead her into becoming rather indulgent in her new hobbies and what brings her joy, which may sometimes border on excess. Reese can become easily lost in certain activities, to the point where she may exhaust any enthusiasm she had in it before. Because of this, Reese finds her hobbies and interests a break in her discipline, and find them rather embarrassing or shameful things—as a result, she has the tendency to limit her relaxation times to only when she’s alone. She nevertheless remains quietly enthused if she notices that other people shares the same joys as her, and she is constantly thinking about how to next improve her extracurricular skills, as is evident by the themes of her Mental World.
HISTORY: Reese was born in San Francisco, California to Thomas Vaughan and Louisa Ellis, a private attorney. The two separated when Reese was an infant, and Louisa was given full custody. From there, Reese began her many misadventures with traveling to the outskirts of her county, where her grandparents resided with her cousin, Redmond.
Most of her childhood was spent in her grandparents' bucolic locale until elementary school, when she went back to living with her mother throughout the whole year, with the exception of a few summers. Reese was always a tall and unfortunately awkward child in her graduating group, and her powers spiking at such an early age didn't help in the slightest, as she began to avoid people she felt generally disliked by. Because of this, time off of school and going to her grandparents' home was very much a safe-haven worth waiting for, as Reese developed an early desire to get away from the white noise of people whenever she could.
In middle school, however, her grandparents were deemed unfit to live alone (proven by constant calls and worrying stories), and Louisa decided to move the Ellis family into her San Francisco flat. Adding three bodies (as Redmond was strung along on the venture as well) to the flat meant being surrounded by even more people constantly, and the idea caused Reese to overstress. Despite her dislike of the situation, her passive dependence on relying on her empathy skills to read and second-guess people spiked in usage considerably. This, of course, allowed her to read trace emotions off of her grandparents, and the feelings she received from them in turn weren't quite so pleasant-- the general air of disdain against Louisa and the flat was quite thick.
Reese, ever dutiful, told Louisa about her suspicions with her grandparents. It resulted in a fight that ultimately boiled down to them being placed in a retirement home, and though Redmond stayed with them, Reese could better handle three people than five. The mood around the house was significantly improved, and Reese felt as if she'd done a good deed by informing Louisa of what she felt. As a result, Reese continued to tattle on people to Louisa if she considered them untruthful or otherwise untrustworthy, and Louisa, finding this indicative of both good intuition and deduction, chose to believe her faithful daughter.
Reese unknowingly continued to improve her empathy skills-- slowly, because she wasn't aware it was a psychic ability at the time-- and grew more confident of them. By the time she reached high school, however, her aura reading skills spiked up, though she only had a shaky handle on it. It was through this that she understood that her sensitivity around people wasn't a sham, after all, and she guessed her aura reading had to do with her ability to understand people's general moods and dispositions instead of personalities. After making this deduction, Reese informed Louisa, and Louisa-- only vaguely informed on psychic matters-- believed her wholly.
It was from then on that Reese became something of a specialist consultant to Louisa. Though they kept it a secret between themselves, Louisa used Reese's ability as a way to gauge if certain clients were worth her time. It was through this practice that Reese met a truly shady character with a particularly pale aura; though she informed Louisa of this, the case was too big for her to turn down. As a result, however, Louisa ended up losing the trial and was sued by the client for malpractice, as is the norm against many losing attorneys. During the case evaluation, it was discovered that Louisa had, in fact, relied on Reese for many of her client judgments, going so far as to make bets against them. She was consequently disbarred.
Reese felt immensely guilty about the ordeal; at 14, it was a world of discomfort having her mother lose her job and career. Upon hearing the news, Reese practically fled to her grandparents' retirement home to tell them what had happened, though she chose not to visit them for years. When she arrived there, however, she was shocked at being surrounded by the sea of white auras. Either everyone at the retirement home was malicious, or Reese had made a very, very wrong judgment about the auras she was seeing.
After Louisa's disbarment, both Reese and her decided to live off of her savings for a while and devote a year to travel and soul-searching. Instead of being discouraged by her awful fanfare, the incident at the retirement home and Louisa's disbarment encouraged Reese into honing her skills to the best of their abilities. She found more technical information on her powers while away from school, and traveling allowed Reese to hone her empathy and aura-reading skills around the world, which proved especially useful because of language barriers in certain areas. A fateful trip in Cape Town, South Africa and many meetings later, Louisa married a retired Psychonaut named Gerald July upon their return to the United States, whose specialty was the study of kineses.
As an intuitive psychic, Gerald posited that Reese was a psychic herself almost instantly. After settling back into San Francisco, he offered her more inside information on the psychic community to gauge her interest, and the two became close friends. The very same year, at 14, Reese applied for the Murmuring Pines program and completed its available courses in three months. She finished her academic years at a formal public high school at 15, then attended Majesco Academy in lieu of her junior year of high school at 16, and opted during her stay there to reroute her course in life to become a Psychonaut.
Fortunately for Reese, her exemplary work at Murmuring Pines, combined with her potent psychic abilities and relatively late entrance into the academy earned her an invitation to become a teacher's assistant her first year during its latter term. As of 2014, Reese is serving as a teacher's assistant full-time as a second year student, and is enthusiastically serving the psychic community any way she can. . . .

Reese's powers are predominantly passive. Her first active ability to pop up was Hypnosis, which only happened the latter half of the first year she stayed at Majesco. Because of this, Reese is very much the observer and background listener, built more to round up facts about people via recon.

NAME: Gear AGE: 3 years (manufactured 2011) SPECIES: Laptop (Alienware M18x) POWERS: N/A OWNER: Reese Vaughan
APPEARANCE: Gear is a bulky laptop. It (he!) is distinctly less suited for travel than current-age Windows laptops, and, of course, any Apple model, but his sleek black chrome interface spans a beautiful 18-inches wide with a non-reflective screen ideal for gaming. The keyboard is stylistically backlit with neon purple lighting. When starting him up, you will find that he runs a perfectly normal Windows Vista OS interface, and the wallpaper remains a pitch black, with no icons to be seen.
His choice of wear is a bright purple laptop case made of slick neoprene material.
PERSONALITY: Gear has the functionality and wealth of knowledge a 1920x1080p screen was manufactured to contain. His acute 320GB of memory makes him a steadfast companion during lost times while on a job, making his cumbersome 12 pounds a penny's sacrifice in light of the help he's given his owner since 2011. He is a private creature, preferring the company of only his owner, and is nary the type to unveil secrets to strangers.
On the whole, though, if one were overly critical, one could say that Gear is a simple laptop, lacking completely of personality, but it's not true. Were you to get into the technicalities, yes, he is growing-- a poorly built AI is being coded for him as we speak-- but lest you risk breaking his sturdy but pristine heartdrive, you would say he is still very much a growing boy.
HISTORY: Gear was manufactured as a standard Alienware laptop. He was shipped directly from the factory through an Amazon distributor to the Ellis household, where he was gift-wrapped and laid in wait for Reese's birthday. He was gratefully received, and has rarely left Reese's side since. . . .

NAME: Temperatory Academy
THEME: Strangely enough, Reese's Mental World is like an academy of its own, though people are highly polarized into different houses a la Hogwarts, but with Ender’s Game sci-fi aesthetic. The first thing you must do upon entering Reese’s Mental World is go through a screening in a small briefing room, where the robot headmaster, Headmistress SpEYE, will sort you into one of four houses, based on your temperament:
SANGUINA (yellow), CHOLEA (red), MELANCHOLA (blue), PHLEGMA (green)
Everyone is given a uniform reminiscent of a space suit, with a small LED light in the middle that indicates their house. Afterwards, you report to your house headquarters, run by a series of alien and robotic head professors and students, before you can go off on your way through the Academy. Leaving the Academy seems highly impossible, as it's a large spaceship isolated in deep space: Earth is just a blue marble from its point of view.
Reese herself is in House Melanchola.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
CONSTRUCTS: Robots and aliens of varying roles around the academy roam the quarters: professors are generally aliens, and helpers are generally robots. If aliens are present, the color accents of their outfit or body features are typically correspondent to their aura.
CENSORS: Little and Strongarm. Little Censors look like beady-eyed aliens, and Strongarms are robots. They're in charge of keeping students in line, but can be overzealous. If it seems like you're trying to skip class-- which will be all the time, given that you don't have a clear schedule here-- or try to sneak into a house quarter that isn't your own, they will come after you.
ENEMIES: Alongside the human students or professors that arrive at the Academy, there are some rude Personal Demons here under the guise of being students themselves. There are also Revolutionaries, alien students who are trying to take down the Academy. It will take some degree of Empathy to scope out their malicious thoughts, and they will be the only inhabitants of this Mental World whose auras will read brown or white.
SpEYE, the robot headmaster, is also the 'boss' and main enemy of Temperatory Academy, as she is somewhat dictatorial in her actions and is the one in charge of imposing punishments for demeaning students. As you venture the academy, you notice that the true goal of Temperatory Academy may be to condition students into fitting an unfeeling, same-personality mold, so that the themselves may also act as robots.
FIGMENTS: Gears, game consoles, computers, books of various shades of purple.
MEMORY VAULTS: Public: Reese's 3-month Murmuring Pines bonanza. [At the cafeteria] Public: Talking to stepfather about the wonders of Psychonauts! How exciting! [In the House Melanchola quarters] Private: Reese terrified in a sea of white auras at the retirement home. [In SpEYE's office]
OBSTACLES: Reese's world is very much a game of empathy and politics. You have to form the right alliances, and as you delve more into the history of Temperatory Academy, you'll realize that there are in fact three factions-- the chaotic revolutionaries, who want to take down the academy, SpEYE and her authoritative, strict robot group, and a small student body of expatriots who seek alliance against the headmaster's ways. Find out who you can trust by reading their surface emotions to gauge how truthful they are, and use your passive abilities to either mingle with the crowd or stand out and take action. . . .
