(( .... thank you. so much. I ... *loss for words* I hope to maintain what you see and like, because I sincerely enjoy playing with you as well. ))

It wasn't hard to sense her mild discomfort at the opening of the music, nor to observe her hesitance to look him in the eye. Kyouya made a point of keeping things simple until she could relax more, and bit by bit the motion of the dance began to bring them into being more of a matched pair, rather than two separate entities.

There was a soft undercurrent of ... not quite tentativeness? ... in her movement, he decided, as he gently led them further. The initial awkwardness was fading, but still ... there was a more subtle undertone, as if perhaps she were still feeling a bit alone at Ouran, and perhaps in Japan at large. So it was after careful consideration that he broke the silence between them, and inquired of her, "Has your exchange visit been pleasant so far? Very different from your home, or is it similar?"

((aw, I’m so glad! It’s a relief to hear I’m not a bore. Now I wish I fleshed out my character more/gave her more depth to make things more interesting; I was initially only planning to make the occasional casual visit but you and Shiny have captured my interest. I might sneak some edits into that notebook of yours c:< ))

As one would expect, Kyouya moved with perfect precision, never missing a beat and leading the steps perfectly. But as they continued to dance, Jasmine discovered not cold precision, but a gentle kindness in his movements. When her steps faltered slightly, he gently led her back in the rhythm. When she was a little off balance and tightened her grip a touch, he subtly strengthened his arm to provide support. She didn't need to say a word, and neither did he. It made her feel… safe. She couldn’t help but relax.

In response to his inquiry, she found herself naturally tilting her head up to reply, gazing into his deep brown eyes with her own light blue ones.

((The writer has now decided she is going to be a blue-eyed asian for plot purposes. blaugh ))

“It’s been… a great experience. It’s interesting to experience a new culture and meet new people,” she replied absentmindedly, giving a generic exchange student reply.

However, his inquiry dredged up some other thoughts she had been repressing for a while.
To be honest, her life hadn’t changed much since she had arrived. Sure, there was a new language, and she was living in a different near-empty mansion, but had her life really changed as she had hoped?

(( Please, feel free to do whatever you need with your character. We're very flexible here! And you're definitely not a bore ... I endeavor not to spend time with bores, after all. *amused look* ))

As she began to relax, Kyouya did too -- he was able to spend a bit more time focused on her, as the dance smoothed itself out between them. Which meant that he noticed that her verbal response -- not unexpected, and fairly standard for most transfer students, in his experience -- wasn't necessarily matched by those light-blue eyes. Idly, he wondered if she had European ancestry somewhere in her family's history ... he filed that thought away for later.

In fact, maybe just a soft bit of teasing was in order, to see if he could determine what was causing that mildly-abstracted look in her eyes. "Is that so? I thought that you might be inclined to say that Japan was atrociously dull, small, and provincial compared to China," he offered, with an easy smile.

((Why, Kyouya-senpai, where’s your host-ly spirit? Don’t all guests need to be attended to, whether you enjoy their company or otherwise? (; ))

Jasmine’s expression brightened and her eyes lit up at the gentle jibe.

She hadn’t realized how much she missed the teasing joke of a friend.

“Well, Japan is certainly small,” she replied with a smile, “but I wouldn’t know if it were dull or not. I really haven’t gone out much.”

Her eyes darkened once more as she returned to her thoughts.
She had gone out, once. After all, Tokyo was by no means devoid of entertainment. But it wasn’t the same without anybody to enjoy her time with.

When she first arrived, she had hoped her mother’s friend might at least briefly show her around. But once Jasmine had settled in she had left for some vacation, leaving her in the care of the staff, who barely spoke to her. It was a bit like home, but at least back home she had her brother.

(( Oh, certainly, all guests need attention. I entirely agree. But it's far more pleasant and diverting to converse with someone whose company you enjoy, don't you think? ))

Internally, Kyouya was pleased to see her expression lighten somewhat -- but mildly surprised when it faded again shortly thereafter. Curious. "I can imagine. I've been to China a few times, and it's a strange experience to be so far from a coastline. I suppose it just depends on what you're used to," he explained. The conversation slipped into a soft lull as he gently directed her into a graceful spin, and brought her back to him.

"So have studies or family been taking all your time, then? It seems a waste to come all this way and not experience the country, what with the expense of the trip and the extra cost for foreign-exchange tuition," he observed, as he helped her re-settle back into the usual flow of the dance.

((You flatter me.))

Jasmine generally didn't like spins. She always felt a little out of control at the beginning, and couldn’t fully express herself and enjoy the spin before she was brought back.

But Kyouya’s timing was perfect.

A master of both dance and observation. What can’t he do? She wondered. His seeming perfection prickled an unconscious desire within her to find his flaws and break that calm façade.

"It's... my studies." She replied briefly.

She had always been studious, even after studying had ceased to hold much value once she was no longer under pressure to become heir to her father’s corporate empire.

Really, why did she study? Out of habit? Because it was one of the few things she really knew how to do?

In contrast, Kyouya seems so driven, she observed idly as the dance continued.

((I /had/ to reply before leaving so I'd have something to look forward to when I came back baha P: LEAVING FOR REAL NOW))

((Ooh, I do believe that's my shadow-sense tingling, sensing upcoming fun and games with Miss Jasmine ... ))

Something had shifted just slightly in the way she held herself, Kyouya decided, as the two of them glided across the floor. Interesting. He filed it away, not entirely certain of its meaning, but quite sure that there had been a change.

That brief response earned her a delicate quirk of a fine dark eyebrow. "You sound so enthused," he observed, a soft touch of irony forming an underlay in that mellow, precise voice. "I take it your dream is not to be a cloistered librarian, then, studies and lack of adventure notwithstanding. Nor, apparently, is it in international business?"

She'd mentioned it the night before, in their chance meeting as she'd been disposing of her drink. He hadn't forgotten.

((She's going to try, but Jasmine is a blumbering child with no idea what she's doing in comparison to Kyouya so I doubt she'll find any dirt or make him lose his composure anytime soon. poor bb girl. we'll get there one day. maybe. probably not.

Also for consistency/continuity sake I think I shall end the waltz. The things we discuss are overlapping a little with the main forum :3 It was a lot of fun!))

Jasmine was surprised that he had remembered something she had mentioned so briefly.

"Well, I...." She wasn't sure how to explain. As she thought of what to say, her eyes fell towards the watch on her wrist.

"Goodness, I should really head back!" Her feet slowed to a stop and she withdrew her arms, stepping back to return to a normal speaking distance.

"Thank you for the dance. It truly was a pleasure," she said sincerely as she curtsied slightly in parting. "I hope to get another chance in the future."

(( Maybe, maybe not -- but as long as she puts up a good fight, she'll continue to pique his interest. Ootori does live for challenges ... ))

"The pleasure was all mine," Kyouya returned her curtsey with a bow, carefully calibrated to be properly respectful to both his partner and the dance. "And I'm sure we will. I look forward to spending time with you again, Miss Jasmine."

Those dark eyes followed her as she departed, before another young lady claimed his attention for the next dance.
