User ImageIt was shortly before dawn. The moon had set and the sun had yet to rise. In the dead now of winter there were no insects to chirp and no birds to sing. The only thing stirring in all the camp were the sentries switching out. Oh, and Cataracta.

Cataracta was the eldest of the Death General's surviving biological daughters. Not that she cared, or really, that anyone seemed to care. She would rather be known for her battle prowess than her heritage. Cataracta the Blood-Soaked, Cataracta the Flame-Eyed...Yeah, those sounded like okay names to her. But those were things to worry about when she was all big and scary and stuff. At the moment, Cataracta was merely a very restless, very bored child. Retinadeath was off doing...whatever it was she did. Whatever. Who cared. Not the point. Retinadeath wasn't really her mother, anyway. Oh, she'd squeezed Cat out, alright, but she was a bit too busy to be doing anything with them. No, she'd put them in the hands of their older (adopted) sister to be raised. Sure, fine, whatever. Tonestue was nice and all, but she was also asleep, and they were under strict orders from their absent mother not to rob their pregnant sister of her beauty sleep. Cat grinned. Tonestue wasn't the only person she could bother.

Keratoconus, no, he was out of the running. He spent most of his time with Plamen. Wolfbane, nah, Ret had said something earlier about taking him on patrol some morning to show him the ropes. Hyperopia was boring. That left her with just one option. Target spotted. Target locked. Going in for the kill. Cataracta pounced on her younger sister, Epiphora, leaned into her ear and whispered, "Wakey, wakey, Epiphora! C'mon, get up, let's go make someone miserable!" Who could resist that?

The sister in question was curled up on the ground, head wrapped around her front legs. The perfect model for a newborn fawn hiding in the tall grass. Only she wasn't a fawn. If she was, she'd be wolf food soon after her birth with her bright blue baby fur hardly camouflaging in the grass around her. Not even the blue sky reflecting on water would be able to hide this blue.

Or any of her family members, for that matter. Such a bright bunch for loyal subjects of the Shadow. Or supposed loyal. Epiphora wasn't sure yet how she felt about the herd. She didn't feel the need to be mean unless someone was mean, first. Didn't find amusement in the downfalls of others. Not like some foals were already started to exhibit a taste for. Epi, on the other hand, found she liked to stand quietly to the side, hoping she didn't attract any notice.

Unfortunately that didn't work so well when one had siblings.

The foal yelped, than groaned when her rest was interrupted. She had been hoping someone had tripped over her by accident. There were five of them. Why couldn't she go bug someone else?

"But I like sleep," she whined, trying to shake her body in hopes Cat would slide off. Somehow.

Epiphora was Cataracta's prettiest sister. No, screw you, Ma, Epi was pretty. She was all blue and orange and green. Someday there would be stallions falling all over her. She giggled whenever she thought about what she'd get to do to any of them that didn't deserve Epi. Cat clung on harder, her legs wrapped around her sisters shoulders as she nuzzled the other filly's neck. "You can sleep later, when Tonestue's complaining about us being too energetic. But no one's watching us right now! We can do stuff! Go on adventures! Break rules! C'mon, Epi, I wanna spend time with you. You're y favoritest," she added, and it was true. Epiphora was quiet. Cataracta was loud to the point of pain. But Epiphora was...safer. Saner. Than the rest of their herd. Unthreatening. Somehow, when she was around Epi, Cat could relax, just a little bit.
