      Ethnicity: Russian American

Appearance: Ilse is a slender, youthful looking woman of above average height. She has a thin and slightly athletic build, with toned muscles that aren't particularly defined, which gives off the illusion of fragility that lead many to underestimate her in terms of her physicality or physical prowess. Ilse has what many describe as a 'ghostly pale' complexion, and she knows that her skin is prone to sunburns which results in her constantly having to apply sunscreen and cover up on overly sunny days. Ilse's skin itself resembles her mother's in its smoothness and flawlessnes, with no signs of blemishes, scarring, or other imperfections anywhere on her persons. She bears no tattoos or markings.

      Strengths:
    • Fearlessness ~ Not to say absolutely nothing scares Ilse, but things that normally scare others - darkness, fire, clowns, death, etc. - have no ill-effect on Ilse. Her fearlessness acts as a double-edged sword more often than not. Strength-wise, it allows Ilse to stay level-headed in situations where others may be struggling to maintain their composure. Very little will startle her or disrupt her train of thought.
    • Natural Grace ~ Ilse seems to have inherited her mother's sense of gracefulness, evidenced in her skill and finesse in ballet, and her nimble footwork with her swordplay. No matter how complex a routine may be, it is highly unlikely that Ilse would ever trip on her own feet.
    • Morality ~ Ilse has a very defined sense of right and wrong, and almost nothing is capable of swaying her views, which gives rise to her own stubbornness. No matter who you are or what your reasons were, if you did wrong, Ilse will see to it that something is done about it, but that may not always necessarily mean she'll tell a higher authority.
      Weaknesses
    • Fearlessness ~ Ilse's fearlessness acts as a double-edged sword in that it gives her a false sense of confidence and a certain boldness that makes it difficult for the girl to understand when/where to hold her tongue, or when to stand down and walk away. In other words, she has a slightly skewed concept of bravery versus stupidity.
    • Stubbornness ~ When Ilse puts her mind to something or has an opinion on something, very little will sway her in any other direction or stop her from doing what she wants.
    • Jewellery ~ Ilse seems to have a natural fascination for jewellery, and will almost never refuse a gift of jewels. Her fascination is almost like an obsession, and over the years has gotten so serious to the point where she is capable of telling whether something is real or fake by inspection.
      Fears
    • Indifference ~ With her fearlessness, one of Ilse's greatest fears is losing the ability to really 'care' about anything to the point where it may compromise the safety and security of either herself or of those that are close to her.
    • Loneliness ~ Having witnessed the effects of loneliness first-hand with the breakdown of her mother, one of Ilse's deepest fears is of being alone for the rest of her life. Her shyness and tendency to close herself off from strangers makes it even harder for her to establish longing relationships.

      Skills
    • ADHD ~ Like all demi-gods, Ilse has ADHD which helps her in battle situations, giving her supernatural battle reflexes and senses.
    • Dyslexia ~ Like all demi-gods, Ilse's brain is 'hard-wired' for divine Ancient Greek instead of modern languages, making it hard for her to read normal texts in languages like English.
    • Ballet ~ From an early age, Ilse was drilled in ballet by her mother who, after seeing that her daughter was struggling in school, decided a life of standard education was not fit for her. Ilse's mother decided to mould her daughter into a model ballerina.
    • Swordplay ~ With the grace, balance and flexibility attained from her dance, paired with her own body's natural battle-sense, Ilse is a formidable opponent in swordplay, choosing the rapier over all other weapons as she feels it is the 'most elegant of all swords'. Ilse's style is classical rapier fencing (rapier + dagger), but is known to also practice modern, competitive fencing.
    • Self Defense ~ With her years in camp, Ilse has come to learn personal unarmed self-defense and is capable of holding her own in most situations granted the variables are fair.

      Paraphernalia
    • Ilse owns a rapier made of celestial bronze, picked up while at camp. It takes the form of a chain-link bracelet around her wrist, and can be activated by first removing the bracelet and whipping it once, which causes the metal rings to bend out of shape into one thin stick. The stick continues to lengthen, eventually shaping into the rapier depicted.
    • Anja gave Ilse a special golden hairpin some ten minutes before she was arrested. It took some time for Ilse to realize that the pin was another weapon - a dagger made of stygian iron that was said to have been a gift to Anja the day before her lover disappeared forever. It now serves as both a sentimental object and a weapon for Ilse, which she keeps pinned behind her hair, away from normal view.

As a child, Ilse was always the quiet one. Shy, soft-spoken, she was almost a stark contrast to her mother Anja, a woman who exuded confidence and embodied the vibrance of livelihood. No matter how hard Anja tried, Ilse could never break from her shell of insecurities. It wasn't until Ilse began to study ballet at the age of four that the girl began to liven up a little. Ballet was the one thing that Ilse found real joy in, and was the one time that Anja would ever see Ilse smiling and enjoying herself. This was due in part to the fact that Ilse struggled in her academics, and fell behind in her studies compared to the other children even in primary education. As she grew older and her studies were focused more on ballet and less on academics, Ilse's shell grew thinner and thinner, and the real girl underneath the insecurities was beginning to shine through, but her happiness did little to mask the concern for Anja's well being, and after the arrest and subsequent suicide of her mother, Ilse receded into her shell again, closing herself off to the world around her. Her time in camp allowed Ilse to slowly come out of her shell once more, and after years of self-reflection and healing her true personality finally began to emerge once again.

Ilse is a kind, caring, and genial young woman with a heart of gold, but a girl still haunted by memories and the realization that she is essentially alone in the world. On the outside, she exudes a certain calmness and level-headedness that makes others wonder just how she can be so zen all the time, while on the inside the girl constantly battles with herself. She never seems to not be thinking of something, but when asked what's on her mind Ilse is the kind of person to brush it off with a simple 'nothing' or a related one-word answer. In that regard, she likes to keep to herself a lot, reminiscent of her upbringing and childhood. However, that being said, the girl always pushes herself to be more social at any given time (and more often than not, it's actually convincing), even if it makes her uncomfortable - determination and stubbornness go hand-in-hand for her. She finds it hard to open up to others on a personal level, but when they gain her trust or when she sees them as true friends Ilse is more at ease with them. When she does make a friend, Ilse will stop at nothing to keep them safe, even if it means sacrificing herself which she will do without so much as a second thought. In the event that someone crosses her however, there is no force on Olympus that will hold Ilse back from plotting the downfall or just desserts of her betrayer.
    • Fatal Flaw: Ilse is known to hold grudges, but not only that, the girl will take it to the next step and actually act on her feeling of being betrayed and plot or scheme and figure out a way to get back at anyone who crosses her. She very strongly believes in the concept of 'an eye for an eye' and is known to be ruthless in that regard - depending on the severity of the betrayal, Ilse will be able to justify her actions and see them as the appropriate or just in dealing with a situation, and once the revenge has been exacted then for Ilse it's like a blank slate all over and the girl will not push it any further unless she is provoked to do so.

As with many people, Ilse's story began long before she was born. Her mother Anja Orlova was born in Saint Petersburg to a middle-class working family. Anja studied ballet from an early age, and eventually earned the title of prima ballerina in her early twenties, working for the New York City Ballet. Anja was forced into retirement in her late twenties, but the one good thing that came out of this unforeseen event was Anja meeting the man she claimed was the 'love of her life', Ilse's father. Anja never really spoke of Ilse's father, though Ilse was always able to tell that the man had a significant impact on Anja's life. Anja raised Ilse as a single mother, which was hard considering Anja's lifestyle and her inability to work again.

Ilse herself was not a particularly easy-to-care-for child. Always crying and wanting attention from her mother, Anja barely had any alone time for herself until Ilse was almost two years old. At the age of four, Ilse was enrolled into a preschool where her caretakers showed great concern for the girl's personal development. According to the teachers, Ilse was not very social with the other kids and would tend to keep to her own corner. This type of behaviour didn't change at all when grade school rolled by. Her teachers noted that Ilse had a difficulty reading, and she was later diagnosed with dyslexia.

In an attempt to cheer her daughter up, Anja enrolled Ilse in ballet, hoping that her daughter would find joy in dance like her mother did. Unsurprisingly, Ilse did enjoy her lessons, and it was then that the girl's true personality began to shine through. It was during these one hour ballet lessons that Anja could finally see her daughter smile for a change, and that meant the world to her. When Ilse turned ten years old, Anja pulled her daughter out of school, opting to home school her daughter because she felt the public school system was unable to teach her child anything of use, and because Ilse was already struggling with her studies as it was.

With the time that should have been dedicated to learning, Anja mentored her daughter and from that point on, Anja tried to make her daughter the perfect ballerina, a prima ballerina assoluta. The truth of the matter, however, was that Anja was slowly digging herself into her own grave. With no job, no income, and no intention to find a husband, Anja barely had enough to get by. The stresses of life were piling higher and higher, and Anja was slipping into a downward spiral of depression. She felt utterly useless, unable to re-enter the job market due to the injuries sustained in her ballerina career, but also unable to enter into a new relationship because of the devotion she had for her lover. The prospect of the love of her life returning to her served as the light at the end of the tunnel, but even that light was fading rapidly. She resolved to stay strong for her daughter, but that light burnt out on May 19th, the fifteenth year anniversary of meeting her lover.

Ilse was fourteen at the time. Asleep and dreaming, she wasn't aware of any of this until May 20th, when she awoke to the police at her door. They told her that Anja had jumped from the Manhattan Bridge and drowned. Distraught and alone, Ilse eventually found herself at Camp Half-Blood, where she was thrown into what felt like an entirely different world. For the first two years of her camp life, Ilse shut herself off from the others, refusing to even so much as talk to the campers unless there was an absolute necessity.

She has come a long way since then, becoming more and more open and friendly with others as she learns more about herself and the reality of her situation.
