She would gladly spend her day holed up in her room with her dog, watching horror movies or surfing the internet on her trusty laptop. Too bad she is the daughter of one of the biggest matchmakers in the business.

As soon as she started to develop into what scientist dubbed an adolescent, her mom has been setting her up on dates, which seem to go wrong every time. She is done with these dates, and she realizes that the only way to get her mom off her back is to find a boyfriend.

When she is partnered with the bad boy of the school on a health project, they can’t stand each other. However, they quickly realize they need each other; she needs him so that her mom will stop with the blind dates, and he needs her so his jealous ex-girlfriend will leave him alone.

So, this odd pair strikes up a deal. For appearances’ sake, they’re an item. Behind closed doors, they may fight like children, but they have managed to fool the people they need to.

However, can a fake relationship stay fake forever?

Of course he was late. Of course. What else was she to expect from him? Jesse was obnoxious, stupid, and just irking to the ends of the earth. Their project was due the next Monday and they'd spent all week bickering, so they had to get all of it done over the weekend. And even after that she was supposed to put up with him for who knows how long! Their "relationship" had begun just a few days before, on Tuesday, whereas their project had been assigned the Friday before. And over the weekend, while discovering their hatred for each other, they also discovered that they would help one another. So she had to put up with him nightly, bickering about their project, then would return to her mother and tell her all about the wondrous boy. It was Friday evening and, as far as her mother knew, they were going on a date. In reality, they needed to finish their health project.

Heaving a heavy sigh, Dakota rubbed her forehead in frustration and leaned back against her hands. She was sitting on her porch, tote bag with all her notes in it on her lap. Her mother had insisted she wear a sleek black skirt and a ruffled silvery-blue top, along with heels for God's sake. However, the blonde had a change of ratty old jean shorts, a Fall Out Boy t-shirt and a pair of Reeboks in her bag as well. Briefly glancing at her phone, Dakota snorted. He's late. Maybe he won't show up at all. That'd be nice, she thought bitterly, then scolded herself vaguely for being so harsh. She pulled up a new message and started to type. To :: Jesse || From :: Dakota || Message :: My mom's gonna think you stood me up. And we have stuff to do. Hurry. And after changing "s**t" to "stuff", she sent it and put her phone back in her bag.

"Cody! Is he almost here? I've been dying to meet this stud you speak so fondly of!" her mother's excited voice rang through the screen door. Dakota looked up at the sky, through the red and orange leaves of autumn, and called back, "We're going to be late for our reservations, Ma! Not tonight." It made her twinge with guilt for lying to her mother, but there was nothing else she could do. Her mother was a marriage counselor and an administrator for eHarmony - as well as Match.com. She loved love, even though she had no one of her own to love anymore after her husband died. She wanted to push love upon Dakota, when the girl was more than happy to play with J.C. (Julius Caesar, her brown lab) and watch Stephen King movies.

// God dammit, he was running later again. Dakota was going to have his head, as if she didn't already. He would admit, she was rather amusing when she was upset. The way that her eyes narrowed and her face turned a light red, it was cute. A lot of the time Jesse liked to piss her off just for laughs. She made it far too easy sometimes. Bidding his father farewell, he grabbed his keys, looping them on his finger. Plucking his phone off of the bar in the kitchen, a look of confusion appeared on his face as it vibrate in his hand. He wasn't confused for long though, not after seeing the name on the screen, chuckling a bit to himself, he shrugged into his black, leather jacket before typing up a reply. to: dakota .. from: jesse .. don't worry your pretty little head, i'm coming. Making sure that the message had sent, he pocketed his phone, strolling over to the black Harley that sat in his driveway.

// For a relationship that had only lasted a few days so far, it honestly wasn't half bad. Aside from the fact that they couldn't stand each other, of course. When they were alone, all they did was butt heads. It was like they couldn't see anything eye-to-eye, save for the fact that they needed to finish their health project. The project that helped them realize just how much they really needed the other. Truth be told, his ex was starting to drive him a bit mad. They broke up, he was over it, end of story, right? Taylor was the one that ended the relationship anyway, so why was she up his a** with her texts and calls? Not to mention that she practically clung to him whenever she saw him, like she could just worm her way back into a relationship. He needed Dakota for a whole lot more than this damn project.

// Pulling up in front of the Torres house, Jesse stilled the bike beneath him, the engine coming to a silence. Taking the helmet off of his head, he got off of the bike, a smug smirk on his face seeing Dakota sitting outside and waiting for him. As well as her mother standing behind the door. Running a hand through his hair, he laughed a little. "Sorry I'm late," he murmured, slipping a hand in his jean pockets. Light eyes wandering over Dakota's form, he raised an eyebrow. Wasn't someone all dressed up. It was rather amusing really, how she dressed up to keep her mother satisfied and unsuspecting. Cute, if he was honest with himself. A lot of things about Dakota were cute. Lifting his hand in a small wave to Dakota's mother, he reached into the compartment on the back of the bike and pulled out the spare helmet, holding it out to Dakota. He hoped she didn't have any problems with that little skirt of hers when she got on the bike. That would be something ti laugh at.

As her phone sounded off from her bag, Dakota lifted it out. She curled her lip only slightly at it, not bothering to respond, and returned it - rather roughly - into the bag. A bark sounded from further inside the house and an adolescent Labrador ran out the screen door and halted sharply next to the blonde. Dakota's mother smiled and shook her head. "He goes nuts when you leave, Cody. It's ridiculous. You spoil him more than you spoil any other boy," she remarked, tsking her tongue. Her hands ruffling through J.C.'s chocolate fur, the blonde girl bit back a retort and simply laughed. "Because he's such a pretty boy," she mused, kissing his nose and receiving a sloppy lick on the cheek. "Oh, dear, he's going to mess up your makeup. Julius-" But she was cut off.

Dakota looked up as a motorcycle stopped in front of their house. The driver, Jesse, her "boyfriend" and project partner, removed his helmet. Her insides melted a little as her dark blue-grey eyes roamed his face. Thick, dark hair, light eyes, unshaven face. Any girl would be stupid if they thought he wasn't attractive. But this just made him get on Dakota's nerves more. Dakota's mother knelt down and placed her manicured had against Julius Caesar's chest, keeping him back, while the blonde rose to her feet, trying not to fall over. "It's fine," she told Jesse sweetly, a look of spite in her eyes. "Bye, Ma, love you. Bye, Julius Caesar!" She tilted her chin up, pecking the brunette boy on the cheek for show, then took the helmet in her hands.

"Bye, sweetheart! I love you!" the woman called back, wiggling the fingers of her free hand at the two, smiling from ear to ear. The dog whined in response, attempting to get free of the woman's grasp. Dakota pulled the helmet on over her curled blonde locks, waiting for Jesse to climb on the bike before seating herself behind him. She wrapped her arms around his waist, her cheek against his shoulder, and muttered, "If you say anything, I will shave your head and hot-glue the hair to your feet. You'll look like a hobbit." While she was sixteen years old, Dakota was very childish and easily flustered. Even then her cheeks were reddening.

// Of course his being late was fine, just look at him. It took time to be this perfect. Jesse's grin widened seeing the spiteful look in her eyes, and it took most of his self control not to make a comment about it. He had to keep those choice words to himself when other people were around, even if it was only her mother and there was a good chance that she wouldn't hear. It was okay, he could make up for the missed opportunity later. He loved seeing her all flustered, be it from embarrassment or anger. She was cute when she was red in the face. Those pretty blue eyes of hers looked anywhere but at him, and her lips parted a little, it was beautiful. And an ego booster. He loved that he could make Dakota swoon. Sure, he could make just about any other female turn red just from looking at them, but Dakota was different than them. Anytime he made her turn red was an accomplishment in his book.

// As her soft lips met his stubbly cheek, Jesse placed a hand softly on Dakota's waist, waiting for her to place her helmet on her head before letting her go. Climbing onto the bike, putting his own helmet as he did so, he turned the keys in the ignition and caused the bike to roar to life. Feeling Dakota mount the bike behind him, he chuckled a bit at her words. "Sweetheart, even you know that my hair is too nice to shave," he replied, revving the engine with a smirk before pulling away from the front of the house. If only he could see the blush that he knew was on her face right now. And all he had to do to cause it was get her on the back of his bike. Seeing the red light of an intersection, he slowed, tilting the bike so he could place his foot on the ground and steady them.

// "Waffle House sound okay?" he asked over his shoulder, figuring it was as good a place as any to go. They could eat some waffles, drink some coffee, and do their project. The place was open twenty-four hours, and it wasn't honestly like there were many people there this time of night. He would know, he had escaped there on multiple occasions to get Taylor off of his a** since she hated waffles and refused to step foot in the small diner. It was quiet, smelt good, and had damn good waffles. Sounded like a winner if you asked him. Besides, on their first escapade to finish this project, he took her to the Waffle House. She didn't complain then - much anyway - so why would she complain now?

Dakota leaned her cheek against the top of his shoulder, her breath warm. She could smell his shampoo and deodorant. He smelled just as good as he looked. She closed her eyes and opened them only when Jesse pulled the two of them to a stop. She turned her head, chin on his shoulder, and jerked back a bit when he turned his face. Blushing, she opened her mouth, stuttered briefly, then replied, "Yeah, sure." She planted her cheek roughly on his shoulder again, jaw clenched, eyes flashing and cheeks crimson.

The blonde sighed softly, her hands splayed out against his flat stomach. Simply a t-shirt between her small hands and his bare chest. Her muscles got taut at that thought, and she curled her fingers into fists around the shirt. The wind buffeted the two of them as Jesse drove them to Waffle house. They'd also gone to Waffle House the first time they'd worked on their project- or the first time they decided they needed one another's help. And now they had it. And, to be honest, it wasn't quite as bad as Dakota had thought. He was cute, if not the most annoying thing in the world, and got her mom off her back.

However, it unsettled Dakota that her first boyfriend was a fake. She'd been on so many dates with so many guys, because of her mom, but they all ended in disaster. Some of them were plain weird, some just wanted to sleep with her. And now it'd be a while before she found an actual boyfriend she could tolerate. How long would she have to put up with Jesse anyways?

// Dakota could hate him all she liked, he could tell that something was going on in that pretty little head of hers. If she disliked him so much, why would she flinch back, blush, and stutter when she saw how close his face was to hers? She was just fighting the inevitable. Jesse's lips twitched up as she roughly returned to her previous position, and he shook his head the slightest bit in amusement. She was adorable for someone that hated everything that had to do with him. Aquamarine eyes turned back onto the road in front of him as the light turned green, and he took off towards the Waffle House. As much as he hated to admit it, he was looking forward to spending the night with her. Just so he could push her buttons.

// A slight look of confusion appeared on the brunet's face as Dakota curled his shirt into her fists, and he glanced down at her hands. That was peculiar. It wasn't as if she could be scared because of his bike, she had ridden on it before and was completely fine. And he didn't notice anything that could have spooked her otherwise. Confident in his abilities to control the bike with one hand, he placed one of his hands over hers, thumb tracing over her knuckles softly. The glowing yellow sign of the Waffle House coming into view, he slowed the bike, having to take his hand off of hers to turn into the parking lot. Pulling into a spot beside the front doors, he stilled the bike, pulling the keys out of the ignition and pocketing them.

// After Dakota had climbed off of the bike, Jesse got to his feet as well, pulling his helmet off of his head as he did so. Holding the brain bucket under his arm, he slid his free arm around the blonde's waist. Leading her up to the front doors, he pushed them open, allowing her to walk in first and following after her. "The table is your choice," he said, seeing how there was a ton of options. There was only five or six other people in the diner, and they would easily be able to get their work done in peace. And maybe eat some waffles too. He didn't hear anything about a curfew, so why not just bullshit the time away?

Her closed eyes blinked open in surprise when she felt a warm, strong hand over her smaller one. Dakota turned her head, chin on his shoulder, and peered down, watching his thumb move in small circles around her knuckles. The gesture was gentle and comforting- everything she refused to associate with Jesse. She let him continue this until they reached the parking lot, and then she leaned away from his broad shoulders and placed her hands on his sides until he came to a stop.

She was quick is limberly swinging her legs onto one side of the bike and jumping off, stumbling a bit in her heels. Pulling the helmet off her now messy blonde half-curls, she let him place his arm around her waist and lead her inside. Moving away from his arm, she nodded to the booth in the far corner of the restaurant. "Go sit down, I'm going to go change out of this ridiculous outfit..." she muttered, sighing and rubbing her forehead briefly before heading to the bathroom. She locked the door and set her back down, quickly slipping out of the all too-fancy clothes and tossing them aside. She pulled the t-shirt on, along with her jean shorts that hit mid-thigh and showed off her creamy skin. Finally, she pulled on her Reeboks and camouflage jacket before leaving the restroom.

Dakota walked over to the booth where Jesse was seated and sat across from him, removing her folder and notebook from her bag. A waitress approached after she'd been seated, and smiled warmly at them. "My name's Maya and I'll be taking care of you guys tonight. Can I get you something to drink?" she asked, briefly letting her eyes trail over Jesse's form. Dakota scowled and replied, "I'll just have some hot tea." And the blonde buried her nose into the papers askew on the table.

// Now how did he know that she didn't dress herself like that? The skirt, shirt, and heels didn't quite have her name all over it. Definitely her mother's doing to make her look pretty for their 'date.' Plucking the helmet out from under her arm as she took off towards the bathroom, Jesse made his way over to the table she had motioned to and sat himself down on one side of the booth, placing the helmets on the far end of the table, against the wall and out of the way. Sliding his jacket off of his shoulders and leaving him in a white v-neck shirt, Jesse sat back agains the booth, waiting for Dakota to come back from the bathroom. Because of his inability to keep things together, he had let Dakota hold onto everything.

// A faint chuckle left Jesse's lips as Dakota appeared, and he shook his head a little. "Now how did I know you had clothes in your bag?" he asked, watching as she took their things out of her bag. His attention was turned from the lovely blonde to the waitress as she appeared beside their table, and he returned her smile. "A hot coffee is fine for me," he stated after Dakota had ordered her tea, and couldn't help but notice the scowl on her face once she had noticed a pair of eyes that didn't belong to her wander over him. They weren't dating, and she was so possessive. Jealous, perhaps? Lips quirking up in a smirk, he leaned forward, placing his elbows on the table. "I only have eyes for you, beautiful," he said in a low, teasing murmur, blue-green eyes sparkling with mischief.

// "So, how much is left to do?" he asked after a moment, now looking thoroughly interested in what was all over the table. He was assuming that they had the majority of the project done, but he wasn't exactly keeping track. She told him to do something, and he did it. He didn't know what part of the project it was, or how much there was left to do. He just did what he had to. Dakota always seemed more capable of staying more organized, so it just seemed right to him. That, and she didn't really seem to mind. If she did, she didn't show it at all.
