Walking slowly through the grassland near the lake, Pillar thoroughly looked for anything interesting to play with-or to eat, either one worked for her. It was a breezeless day, and the just-rising sun was beginning to make illusions in distance. The horizon wiggled and danced as the air became hot, and there wasn't a tree in sight. Pillar stopped to look for shelter from the sun. Under no circumstance is she going to bother with being under the direct heat.
Clicking her tongue, she began to walk towards the lake, hoping to find a large enough tree to give her enough shade to spread out her limbs. A beetle scuttled by and Pillar half-heartily leaned over to reach for it. She watched amused as the beetle easily dodged her fingers. 'Heh.'

Hunting in the Winddroves had been scarce the past few weeks - not an unusual instance, but Bloody Sky had been hungry for far longer than a few weeks, driven through his meager territory by far larger and far more vicious Sentinels. As it was, his hunger had driven him beyond the borders of the Winddroves and into the outskirts of the lake.
The winds had died down to a stagnant, stifling haze - perfect for remaining upstream of potential prey - so Bloody Sky crept beyond the short grasses and into the fields of the lake. He flickered his tongue out to taste the air and smelled other Sentinels, who he would gladly avoid; faint traces of groundlings long gone, a bitter disappointment to his growling stomach; and insects, beetles by the acidity. Oh, even insects he would take to tame his stomach! Bloody Sky followed the tantalizing smell of beetle, too hungry to even care that the bite would likely only make his hunger gape wider, into the taller grasslands. Now that he was closer he could sense the scuttles of the beetle's claws (just one, sadly, but one more than none). Bloody Sky crept slowly along the grass, head down and tongue flickering, following the click-click-patter of a beetle frantically scurrying, until the sounds drew closer, closer, close enough so that he could pounce -
- and land, missing a beetle fleeing from two sets of claws, one belonging to Bloody Sky and one to another Sentinel, a female, whose hide matched the the yellow-brown of the senescing grass around her. Bloody Sky froze, his body still pressed against the ground, and looked up in dismay, the beetle forgotten.

Pillar stared at the new face for a second before coming to a conclusion. "That was my beetle." Not the brightest conclusion, but the quickest thing she could think of given the circumstances. She glanced over towards the beetle to find it long gone. Ah, well there was her snack.
Looking back at the male she roughly grabbed his arm to pull the fellow up. "You're as graceful as Hot Stone..." she muttered under her breath. The sun was now no longer hidden behind the horizon, and the heat pressed against Pillar's body. A grunt later, she was walking towards the lake again, hoping to avoid most of the heat. Hopefully another flash wildfire won't happen again, given the state of the grass. Wading through the grasslands, she left her new acquaintance behind her, hopefully to never lose another snack to male.

"That was my beetle," the female Sentinel said to Bloody Sky, looking disappointed but not bloodthirsty. The beetle disappeared into the grass. Before he could say anything, Bloody Sky found himself dragged upwards, only to be abandoned, for the other Sentinel had moved away, as though disinterested in him already.
"Wait," Bloody Sky blurted before he could stop himself. What am I doing, I should leave, he thought, agitated, but it had been so long since he had spoken to another Sentinel that hadn't run him off their territory, and this one seemed that maybe she wouldn't rend him for speaking.
"Who are you?" Bloody Sky said from his awkward half-crouch, the heat tightening his hungry stomach. The Sentinel was halfway gone in the grass, but he couldn't let an opportunity for hunting pass. "Do you hunt here?"
Can I hunt here? was his unspoken hope.

Pillar paused as she heard the male call out toward her. Bending her neck to look at him from the side of her vision, she waited for him to speak. She sighed as he asked who she was. Starting a conversation isn't the best thing to do when she's trying to get out of the sun. At least the heat won't kill her unlike other things.
"M' name is Pillar. Wouldn't call these m' lands, but I come here often." Pillar flicked her tongue out as she spoke casually. She scratched her head with one claw as she thought about who else frequented the plains. "Just me and a few other I guess. Mostly keep out of each other's way for the most part. Plentiful enough we don't waste energy fight over it, sparse enough that we can never waste energy."
She shifted her body to look towards the male, looking at him closely. "What exactly you plan on doin?" Pillar looked at him suspiciously. He doesn't look bulky enough to be claiming the land, but he could be scouting for another pack...

It was strange that the Sentinel was so free with her territories, but her explanation made sense, even if it turned Bloody Sky's stomach turbulent with envy. He could not imagine a territory with such plentiful prey that wars were not fought over the slightest stone. The wind, however, was so still, and the air was muggy and saturated with heat, so unlike the howling Droves. It would make him so lazy and tepid to live here, but the smell of actual prey in the air was so tempting.
His stomach growled fiercely, interrupting his thoughts, and Bloody Sky returned to the bored female.
"Hunting," Bloody Sky replied nervously. He flipped his tail downwards in a manner of submission, but the Sentinel - Pillar, she'd said, didn't she? - seemed more suspicious than territorial. He hoped so, anyway. "Hunting. I'm planning on - hunting here. If that's acceptable. If you know where any prey is."

Pillar scratched her shoulders as she thought about what the male said. Technically, there was nothing stopping him from hunting here. Most sentinels in this area did not care for waging war, but then again they may also not like the added stress on the hunting grounds. He did seem like he needed the food however, with his tail smaller than her own.
"It's not up to only me." She finally replied. "There are a bunch of others that are on these lands, and I definitely don't speak for them. You can always try your luck a bit closer to the lake-that's where I usually go-but I wouldn't get too comfortable or get the idea of staying too long by yourself. Or bring any more strangers mind you, I wasn't joking when there wasn't enough food to wage war over." She reached over to scratch her shoulder once more, but pulled away when she realized it was probably the heat irritating her back and not an actual itch. Her scales never seemed to keep the heat out.
A loud grunt erupted from her chest as she vented her frustration. Damn heat! "Either way, I'm heading towards that area now. There's a ant mound that is a bit out of the way, I'll show you where it is." Pillar huffed as she turned around and started walking towards the tree line again, less interested in the sentinel behind her and more in finding something relatively cool to rest under to ease her discomfort.
