WHO: Dayo & Fathle (Dracul Vladimir IV), Alex (Chrystali) WHEN: Mid-afternoon WHERE: Lab 305 WEATHER: Cold, but clear
Alex was looking forward to this. She hadn't seen Ekundayo for a long time, though she thought of her often. She was well aware that Fathle - who she'd met only once, which in and of itself was a shame - had taken the Frei out of the country for a time and now that they were back, it was her job to make sure the Raevan was well and healthy. Of course, the woman had no doubts that she was alright, but it was best not to assume. She'd seen what could happen to those who were left unattended for too long.
She waited for the two in her office, idly biting the back end of her pen as she looked at the file on her computer, refreshing herself on Ekundayo's history so she could better gauge the progress. Alex's hair was mostly pulled back into a thick braid, her bangs left to arch and frame her face as usual. Despite the chill weather outside, it was comfortable inside, and as such she wore a simple olive green babydoll with a steel tribal pattern on the side and her standard beige cargo pants. The shirt didn't quite cover the scars that filtered from her right shoulder and faded halfway down her bicep, an acquisition from being struck by lightning in July.
Alex hadn't been expecting to come in today, but she always made allowances for her family -- the Lab. And so, tapping the pen against her teeth, she propped her feet up on one of the drawers on her desk, and waited.

When Dayo had first learned that Fathle had made an appointment with Alex, she was immediately afraid. The raeven had even argued that she didn’t need a check-up. Anyone with eyes could tell that she was doing fine. However, the real reason eventually came to light. “Do I have to tell Alex about… him?” she asked, her golden eyes studying her guardian’s face closely. He took her hand and gently drew her to him. “No, my heart. You do not need to tell her anything you do not wish.” “But—“ “Do you remember what I told you, Dayo?” Fathle asked gently. “It’s… It wasn’t my fault.”
The red-haired man drew Dayo into his arms and he pressed a kiss to her forehead. The raeven immediately relaxed within his embrace. “It was never your fault, my dearest one,” he murmured against her tan skin. “And I’ll tell you again a thousand times.” Dayo didn’t say anything as she leaned against her Faye’s chest. “…a thousand times?” Fathle smiled. “Yes. A thousand. A million even if you need it.” “Won’t you get tired of saying it?” He chuckled. Dayo liked the sound of her guardian’s laugh. “Never…”
She was much more relaxed the day of the appointment arrived. Dayo was still a little nervous but she kept on repeating those words in her head. It wasn’t my fault. It wasn’t my fault. He came into the house. It wasn’t my fault. Dayo got into the car and chatted with her Faye about nothing on the trip over. She gripped his pale hand as they walked into the Lab. It seemed dull after all the Christmas decorations had been taken down after the party. “Come, my heart…” Fathle said as he led Dayo down a hallway and knocked on Alex’s door. He glanced over at the raeven and offered her a warm smile and squeezed her hand.

The door slightly swung open at Fathle's knock, it rarely ever closed if she was in. Alex sat up abruptly, putting her feet back on the floor beneath the desk, leaning forward on her forearms with her attention on the door that idly swung inwards. "Come on in!" she called out cheerfully. Despite her jovial reception, Alex was steeling herself inwardly: Ekundayo had always been a Precious One to her, and Fathle...her memories of him flit nervously in her mind. He was something else entirely.
Folding her fingers together, the pen sticking out from between her middle laced knuckles, she wore her most friendly and welcoming smile, one that easily reached her green eyes. It was hard for Alex to stay seated, wanting to stand and hug them, but...things had changed. She wasn't as affectionate without invitation as she used to be, and so, she remained seated, waiting.

Dayo was the first to cross the threshold of the door. Her golden eyes took in Alex before she smiled. “Hello, Ms. Alex,” she said shyly with a quick glance up at her guardian. “How are you?” Even as she asked the question, she let her unique senses touch on the woman’s emotions; perhaps it wasn’t the politest thing but Dayo couldn’t help it. Sometimes the raeven tired of people just telling her that they were fine or okay. Such single words never covered the range of human emotions that Dayo had tasted. Thus, she focused on Alex and she tasted happiness but it was mixed with… a sort of apprehension. The thought that Alex was nervous as well seemed to make Dayo relax a little bit.
“Thank you, Ms. Alex, for seeing us,” Fathle said with a small nod of his head. His red eyes took in the woman. She had not changed… though, he noticed a new scar that looked like tree roots which twisted down her right arm. He had been patiently waiting to meet her again and had only been foiled by matters of business that took him overseas. Fathle had always wondered if he should have given her some sort of indication of what he felt when he saw her.
Believe me, Husband…
His jaw tensed slightly before he smiled. Dayo turned her head to glance at her guardian again. She had felt that strange emotion. “I am afraid I am wholly out of my element in regards to this, Ms. Alex. Will this appointment be similar to the guardian interview that I participated in?” he asked his lifted his pale hand as Dayo pulled away from him to study one of Alex’s knick-knacks before turning her golden eyes back to Alex.

Alex's smile immediately warmed at the sight of the Frei, finally pushing herself up from her desk and crossing the floor towards her. "Dayo! I'm well, thank you for asking." She extended both of her hands and took one of Ekundayo's, gently squeezing it with open fondness. "You look wonderful. Have you been well? Did you have a nice trip? I'm jealous, I hope you took a lot of pictures and got a lot of souvenirs to remember your good times by."
When Fathle came in, her green eyes turned to him politely, her hands lingering in an almost involuntary manner as she met his gaze. Just his presence was intense, making her chest feel simultaneously weighted and flighty. "Of course," she responded, finally letting go of Ekundayo's hand and extending one to Fathle. "It's my job, and my pleasure. You're all a part of my family."
With pleasantries aside, Alex chuckled and shook her head, motioning towards the hospital-style bed for Ekundayo to go to. "It'll be easier. I'll just do a quick, basic check up to make sure Dayo is feeling well and didn't suffer ill after effects of the flight, ask her some questions, and you'll be on your way." She moved to a drawer on the side of the bed, pulling out some simple instruments like a stethoscope and brow-thermometer, looping the former around her neck. "I wont take much of your time."

Dayo's wings fluttered happily as Alex's warm hand took her own. The raeven almost hummed with happiness as she felt the woman's emotions seep into her skin. "Thank you, Ms. Alex, and..." she glanced over at her Faye again with a small boyish smile before turning to look at Alex again. "Je fais très bien. Merci." Dayo smiled happily. "I had a nice trip. Faye took me to France and let me take lessons," she said, her mind carefully staying away from that one unpleasant incident. "And I did take lots of pictures. I will share them with you when I see you again, Ms. Alex." The young raeven watched as the woman's eyes left her and settled on her guardian. She felt that strange sense of apprehension coming from Alex. Dayo could not place the emotion. It was as if Alex was happy and not happy to see her Faye.
Fathle took Alex's offered hand within one of his pale hands and bowed over it, his lips barely brushing the top of her hand. "You are most kind, Ms. Alex," he said as he let her go with some reluctance. "And all of that sounds reasonable. Please, do not rush. Take all the time that you need, Ms. Alex..." He turned his red eyes to Dayo as she approached the hospital bed and got on top of it. The raeven watched Alex get her tools with curiosity "I feel fine though," she said.

Surprise took over Alex's features for a moment as Dayo spoke in flawless French. The only Raevan she'd known to speak more than English...was Zul. "Vous parlez français? That's impressive! You make the language sound even more beautiful, dearheart." The Italian smiled as the Frei recounted the happenings, bobbing her head in agreement. "I'd love that. I always look forward to the opportunity to see you again, Dayo."
She tried - quite hard - not to react to the pass of lips over her dark, scarred skin. It was impossible to remain unfazed, her reactions subtle to a point: her eyes dilated and she took in a deep breath, holding it for several heartbeats. Alex was certain she'd never be able to treat Fathle like a 'normal' person. It seemed almost insulting to even try. "I will not rush, I'd not be so inconsiderate to you two." Alex smiled, but it wavered, not because it lacked happiness but because she was still stricken with awe at Fathle's affect on her.
Returning to Dayo's side, she chuckled and put the stethoscope buds in her ears. "That's great to hear, Dayo. Deep breath for me please?" She gently pressed the warmed apparatus to Dayo's back where her wings are, waiting for that deep breath and listening before she again removed the instrument from her ears. "You feel well then? No aches, pains, dizziness? No injuries while you were abroad?" Alex smiled in a vaguely apologetic manner, not meaning to sound so formal but it was a part of her job. She had to make sure.

He watched her and caught every nuance of the emotions on her face – the way her smile seemed to drop from her eyes for just a moment before she turned her attention on Dayo. Fathle found his patience slowly eroding each time he was close to Alex. He had been biding his time for so long… For a moment, he had the impulse to reach out and take a hold of her hand.
I have combed the earth for you…
It was then he noticed that Dayo was watching him with a sly turn of her eyes. Fathle offered a smile that did not reach his dark red eyes. The raeven turned to look at Alex. “Okay…” she said with a smile as she took an exaggerated breath and puffed out her cheeks a little before releasing it. Dayo shook her head at Alex’s questions. “…No, I feel fine,” she said, only a moment of hesitation.
No injuries while you were abroad?
No. No injuries to her own body at least. However, Dayo did not allow her mind to go down that road. Instead, she began to mentally repeat what Faye had taught her: It wasn’t my fault. It wasn’t my fault. She covered up her moment of tension by smiling at Alex. “Faye has been taking very good care of me.”

The hesitation was noted, but Alex didn't push. "I'm sure he's been taking wonderful care of you," she responded with a glance to those garnet eyes of the male, "but I meant it more literally. If you were scratched by brush or cut your finger, things like that. Very minor. You'd be surprised how things can carry in the most shallow of injuries." She smiled at Ekundayo gently, taking her hand and squeezing it in reassurance. "I'm sure you're fine. I just have to ask for my file."
Picking up an oblong, handheld device, she pressed the round, metal tip against Dayo's brow, taking her temperature. Waiting for it to finish, she glanced again to Fathle. Alex didn't want to ignore the man, but it felt odd to not speak with him as well. The problem was that she was at a bit of a loss. "Did you have a nice time, Fathle? Even though it was for work?"

"Oh," she said with a small smile. "No, I haven't been injured." Dayo turned to look over at her Faye for a moment before getting distracted by the instrument that Alex was pressing against her forehead. She instinctively held still but tried to look at it. "What is that?" she asked, resisting the impulse to reach up and take it in her hands.
"It's an instrument that takes your temperature, my dear," Fathle said with a small smile before turning his attention to Alex. She had used his name. Hearing it fall from her lips felt almost otherworldly. Fathle didn't say anything for a moment before finally answering Alex's question. "Yes, I did, Ms. Alex. I enjoyed showing Dayo the sights offered in Europe between business obligations," he said with a smile. "And how have you been fairing, Ms. Alex? Have you been well?" He asked, his red eyes watching her face.

"Excellent," she replied easily, watching the numbers flicker on the back of the device. Alex opened her mouth to reply but paused, attention drawn towards the vampire as he answered for her. "He is correct," she remarked softly as she withdrew the item, turning it around so Ekundayo could see the numbers on it. "Perfect numbers for you!"
She didn't answer right away, picking up her chart and jotting down the numbers before she put the instrument aside to clean and put away later. Alex had already told Dayo that she was well, and to insinuate otherwise now might cause alarm. She had to remind herself that the check up was for the Frei, not herself, and she had to not let her own personal affairs cloud things. Smiling just a touch less bright, she tucked a longer piece of her bangs behind her ear. "It's been an interesting year," she ventured to say instead, "and though it's not always been easy, it's getting better."
Green eyes averted from Fathle's intense red ones, turning and crossing the room to put the chart on her desk. His eyes always stirred a memory in her, one that didn't quite form, and knowing it was a repressed one made her have less desire to recall it. Professional, she told herself, and, steeling herself, she turned back to face the two, approaching them with her hands clasped together. "That's it, then! If there's been no issue, there's no need to run blood work or use magic. You're both free to go, and Dayo has a clean bill of health." Alex smiled warmly at the Frei, bowing her head to the Raevan. She knew life hadn't always been easy for the Eagle either, but without knowing her personal life, all she could do was offer minimal medical expertise.

Ekundayo craned her neck to see the small digital numbers on the little device before smiling at Alex’s pronouncement. “Oh good… Faye, what is it called?” she asked as her golden eyes focused on her guardian. “A thermometer, my dear,” he replied. The frei blinked a bit of confusion. She had seen thermometers before, and Alex’s thermometer was something she had never seen before. “Oh, how interesting,” she said with a smile. “I’ve never seen a thermometer that looks like that…” Dayo watched as Alex wrote something in her chart and glanced over her guardian when the woman addressed Faye’s question.
“…I am sorry to hear that your life has afforded you some troubles but I am glad to know that it is getting better,” Fathle said as he watched her return the chart to her desk and how her eyes seemed to avoid him. When Alex announced that the appointment was over, Dayo happily hopped off of the medical bed and immediately floated over to Faye. She was glad that was over. Hiding the truth from Alex felt uncomfortable for the frei considering she considered the human a nice woman. Fathle glanced down at Dayo and smiled as he offered her his arm.
“I am happy to hear you are completely healthy…” he said before pressing a soft kiss to her forehead. Dayo’s rune glowed a little brighter at that. The raeven looked over at Alex and smiled. “Thank you, Ms. Alex. I hope we get to see each other again soon,” she said. Dayo had been expecting to be walking out of the office now but her guardian had not moved.
“Ms. Alex, may I ask a small favor from you?” Fathle asked with a small smile. “Would you permit me to take you out for lunch when you are able?” Dayo looked a little surprised at her guardian’s words before she smiled happily. She hoped Alex said yes. This was the first time she had ever heard her Faye ask a person out for something other than a business transaction.

She let the comment of apology pass, not knowing how to respond. It was best not dredged up, not now, anyway. Alex merely smiled and tipped her head in polite gratitude. It wasn't like she'd know what to say to the red-head anyway, afraid she'd be swallowed by those familiar eyes.
The woman's smile softened considerably when Fathle gently kissed the top of Dayo's head, as well as the Eagle's response. No matter her uncertainty and vague memory of the staunchly polite man, he was an excellent Guardian, attested by his care of the avian-Frei and her reception of him. It did her heart wonders to see a Raevan so adoring of the one that took care of them -- very rarely did the Raevans seem to get along with two-legged individuals. Fathle continued to surprise her in the most pleasant of ways.
But it seemed he wasn't done for today. Alex's eyes went a touch wide at the askance, surprise etched in her features, her posture at a pause but not rigid. She wasn't against the invitation, she just...hadn't been prepared for it. She, too, glanced to Dayo to see of the Eagle knew what was going on, but she caught the surprise on the Frei's face in turn. Interesting.
"That would be fine, Fathle," she found her voice surprisingly calm, even managing a smile that wasn't nearly scrambling for an answer as much as she felt internally. "Please, just...let me know when you're available and we'll schedule something. I'm not that busy, and a change of scenery would be welcome."
Right. Apparently her mouth ran off with her when her brain was frozen and processing shock. Fantastic.

Dayo turned to look at her guardian when she realized that he had been tensing his muscles as they waited for Alex’s muscles. She smiled and took her guardian’s hand in her own. Fathle smiled at Alex’s answer. “Thank you, Ms. Alex. I will be looking forward to it,” he said. He wanted to add more. He wanted to let her know that his actions had been leading up to his point. However, he only smiled. “I will get in contact with you soon, and we can plan a date and time that are convenient for both of us. Once again, thank you…” Fathle then directed his attention to Dayo. “Are you ready, my heart?”
The frei nodded and looked over at Alex. “Thank you, Ms. Alex! I hope we’ll see each other soon,” she said with a smile. Dayo opened the door and floated outside while Fathle lingered for a moment.
“Have a good evening, Ms. Alex,” he said, his red eyes taking in her form one more time before he offered a small bow and softly closed the door behind him.

The woman smiled easily, concealing the shock at herself as best she could. Bowing her head, she lifted a hand and waved her fingers as the two made their retreat. "Til then, Fathle. Be well." Again, Alex was warmed by the way he addressed and treated the Frei, in a manner with so much love and consideration. She wasn't sure she'd ever seen such behavior before, even though she always hoped for it from all their Guardian hopefuls...
Jarred out of her thoughts, Alex wore a brighter smile for the Frei's gaze, blowing the eagle a kiss. "Me too, Dayo! Take care sweetheart!"
And then it was just the red-head in the doorway and her, feeling a little foolish with her hand still raised, her arm lowering slowly. She didn't know what to say immediately, and before she could find more words - sanctioned or no - the man was gone, the door closed in his wake. Alone in her office, she sighed deeply, feeling like she'd just run a marathon. Maybe they'd be able to clear things with this arrangement, she reasoned, and with that thought in mind, she dutifully returned to work.Dracul Vladimir IV I LIED gave it a quick closing so it felt neater and will reply to the other one soon!
