What is the significance of the stag/elk Will keeps seeing? Is it a reference from the books? If so, what? It's been a few years since I've read the books, so if it is from there then I've forgotten. Thanks ahead of time to anyone who can help!

It's a figment of Will's imagination that ties everything back to the hobbs case and how hannibal is the one that warned hobbs and changed the fate because had hannibal no known about it, had he not put that girl out in the field on the stag's head for the birds to pick at, had he not made that phone call, Garrett Jacob Hobbs would have never seen Will coming. Beverly would have found the piece of metal on the nightgown. Will would have made the connection with the pipe fitters and glue being made out of bones and antlers, and he would have gone to that site and found garrett jacob hobbs by that one little coincidence that he didn't put an address on his termination slip. But because Hannibal called the number and warned him, everything changed.
