This thread is for the mugshots for the game I want to develop. I know I have to chance the colour pallets later on when I intend to put them in the game but for now, this is just a sneak at what people are going to look like!
Recruitable Units: Stolas: The Prince of Hell

Please be advied that this is just a beta of what he will look like. The shading is not finished at all! Though I will be accepting criticisms. 3nodding

Out of curiosity, why, if you know you are making this for a game, are you first make it in gaia colors and then changing the palette to work for the game, instead of just starting with an acceptable game palette from the start? Changing the colors can alter the shading and make something that used to work not work any longer. It just creates more unnecessary work, as well. In any case, do you know what you need to make it work for the game? The boundaries and color limit, etc. I can help, if not. WhirlwindTerror knows ROM hacking and can give technical coding requirements and advice if needed and asked.
On to the mug: (I'm keeping in mind that this is a draft with unfinished shading.) The area around the eyes is dark. Is that part of the mask or is that shading on the skin? If it's skin shading, some work is needed; look at FE mugs like Ephidel or others that use dark shading around the eyes to get an idea of what to do.
I see you're using a highlight color in the hair. That's not going to work for GBA mugs.
The shading on the colored part of the shirt is clunky. I'd remove those and let it be the base color except for where the folds should go, near the armpit.
The ear should be lowered. It alters slightly with the pose of mugs, but for a straight and level one like this, the ear should align around the eyebrow and bottom of the nose.
The shape of where the mask goes onto the nose could use some adjusting.
The overall shape of the mug looks nice. The hair works and will hopefully come together better once the shading is done. The mask, while a little bizarre, also works. The proportions of the face are correct save for the ear, which I mentioned already. The eyes look like they'll work, but it's hard to tell with the shading the way it is right now. Pretty nice job so far, you're off to a good start with nice shaping.

To clear a few things up, I'm using the colour from this image. So it was quicker to colour all his parts normally than figure out which colours I can and cannot use. Also, all help for making the rom is appreciated :3 I just need to finish writing the story first before I start :3

Oh, those are feathers. Feathers can be hard to get looking right. Look at Priscilla to help get an idea for the colors you'll need, once you transition, as well as how feathers are shaded. Gaia feather items can probably help show how to shade feathers, too. Because right now, to me, I couldn't tell they were feathers. But I know it's not done.
As for other others, the easiest way is just to look at FE mugs and pick from mugs that have colors that are closest to what you want. After that, you can alter the colors to what you want, so long as they aren't too dark. (AKA darker than the outline color). If you sprite using MS Paint, you can use the eraser trick to easily recolor, as well. (color existing in first color slot, color to replace it with in second color slot, click on eraser tool, right click over the area to recolor- just in case you don't know that already.)
Also, I should mention something I forgot to say in my last post. You said this is a hack for FE8 and that game shades its mugs differently than the other GBA games, particularly in the face. I'd take a look at the FE8 mugs close up and compare them with the other games to see the difference. Basically, the colors are darker, and the shading is more contrasted. A lot of the mugs will use a darker skin color to shade the whole far side of the face instead of the one used in the other GBA games, although some characters in 8 still use it.
Now that I see the reference picture for the character, I'd have to say that the mug doesn't quite resemble him in the age he's portrayed as in the image. Is the mug a younger version of him? Facial structure can easily be changed to make it more masculine and show age, though. The ear can also be messed with to give it its "elven" appearance. As for the hair, the image has a gradient which, to me, makes it seem like it's also conveying age by hair losing its color with age. This also makes me wonder if the mug is a younger version of the character in the image. Haircolor can always be changed and a streak of white hair can even be added, like how other GBA mugs have. The eyes in the mug also convey youth to me, whereas the eyes in the image convey age and a touch of 'evil'. Eyes can ALWAYS be tricky to do, I spend so much time trying to make them perfect. There's plenty of GBA mugs that can help with how to shape eyes, though.

I'm glad you're mentioning all this. I've got a few questions in reply to what you've said though! Nomad Rath Look at Priscilla to help get an idea for the colors you'll need, once you transition, as well as how feathers are shaded. Gaia feather items can probably help show how to shade feathers, too. I'll have it a look at it now! :3 Any items in particular I should look at to see how feathers are done? (Gaia Items) Nomad Rath If you sprite using MS Paint, you can use the eraser trick to easily recolor, as well. (color existing in first color slot, color to replace it with in second color slot, click on eraser tool, right click over the area to recolor- just in case you don't know that already.) I've never known about this trick. I've found that MS Paint is the perfect program for doing all of this. So I'll try it out now shortly. I'd imagine it will come in great use! Nomad Rath Basically, the colors are darker, and the shading is more contrasted. A lot of the mugs will use a darker skin color to shade the whole far side of the face instead of the one used in the other GBA games, although some characters in 8 still use it. I've noticed that before. I imagine it's to give the game a darker feeling to it. Nomad Rath Is the mug a younger version of him? Halfway through I realized that it looked significantly younger. I'm thinking about using this younger looking Stolas as a recuitable character, while taking the mug and making an older version to be used as a boss. Stolas being a recuitable character (of royalty, similar to Joshua or L'archel) and making his father be a significant boss throughout the game. Nomad Rath Facial structure can easily be changed to make it more masculine and show age, though. The ear can also be messed with to give it its "elven" appearance. How would I go about making him look older? Also, what would you recommend to do make his ear look a bit more elven? Nomad Rath Eyes can ALWAYS be tricky to do, I spend so much time trying to make them perfect. There's plenty of GBA mugs that can help with how to shape eyes, though. Eyes are a big thing for this one because the sclera is black, and he's got the dark skin tone around the eyes. They're kinda like a focal point, I suppose. What would you recommend I try to do give him older looking eyes?

Gaia feather items can probably help show how to shade feathers, too. I'll have it a look at it now! :3 Any items in particular I should look at to see how feathers are done? (Gaia Items) I can answer you that question. There's Angel Imp's Feather, Snow Feather, and Pegasus's Feather. However, I suggest looking at Angel Imp's Feather since it's the closest to how a feather looks. And if you want to know what it looks like when being bunched, you can check Gabriel's Wings, Dove White Kachina Dancer's Wings, and Noble Plumage. EarthDeparture Nomad Rath Facial structure can easily be changed to make it more masculine and show age, though. The ear can also be messed with to give it its "elven" appearance. How would I go about making him look older? Also, what would you recommend to do make his ear look a bit more elven? While I admit that I'm not a spriter, I think maybe you can change his jawline different. Because to be honest, when I first look the sprite, he looks like a woman to me. sweatdrop I don't know if Rath mention this or not, but in my opinion, I think you should broaden his shoulders since male's structures are bigger than female's structures. As for the ears, you can check out Idoun since Idoun's ears look elven. EarthDeparture Nomad Rath Eyes can ALWAYS be tricky to do, I spend so much time trying to make them perfect. They're kinda like a focal point, I suppose. What would you recommend I try to do give him older looking eyes? In my opinion, I think his eyes should be smaller. His eyes look pretty big to me and having big eyes usually give the characters younger appearance. smaller (dunno if slimmer counts) eyes give the appearance of now only older, but also some wisdom in the characters too. However, the suggestions I've said are just my opinion. So don't take my word for it since I don't have experience as Rath, FD, and Amelia. >>;
