"Oh," she looked flustered, and then paused, and then opened her mouth, and closed it again. Awkward silence. "I'm not looking for a girlfriend either. That's okay right?"
Wait why was she asking him.
She absently took one of the cookies off the tray and broke it into two pieces, just the head, nibbling on it. She wasn't wearing very much, even in the cold spring, and had situated herself on a small ledge, rainbow stockings, just one, dangling off the side. "I chose you because you seemed, well, a little scared. Are you afraid of shadows, Mister Konstatin?"

They stared at each other in silence, and he realised almost immediately that he had, in fact, misinterpreted the situation. That didn't actually shed any new light on what the situation actually was, but he was at least relieved that there were no romantic overtures with her insistence on dragging him along on an adventure.
"Good," he said, making a bit of a face, and helplessly took another cookie, for the simple fact that he clearly needed to occupy his mouth. He was not to be trusted to speak.
He chomped on a leg, eyeballing the rainbow girl (and it was more than just a scarf, it was a legging, it was her smile, it was so much more) as she talked.
A little scared.
(The shadows were long, and the night was dark, and the nightmares were--)
Kostya lowered the cookie from his mouth, his gaze turned curious. Suspicious.
"No," he said, finally. "Not of shadows. Am...Am afraid of vhat shadows mean."
How could she know?

Her legs stopped moving, for a second, and she sat very still, and very slowly, leaned over so that the tips of her feet touched the half-snow covered ground. "What do they mean to you, Mister Konstatin?"
Absently, she passed him the tray of cookies again. The apron she wore along with the tray made her appear more motherly than anything else.

He looked her in the eye, the remaining pieces of the cookie crushed in his clenched fist.

She looked extremely alarmed that Kostya had crushed a mere innocent cookie and set the tray down, probably to protect the rest of the confections. "Oh, but that's not what I-" she settled herself down, straightening her posture and looking at Kostya with rather determined eyes.
"What if, Mister Konstatin, I told you the shadows were also afraid of you?"

"Vhy afraid of me?" he asked, incredulous. He was boring. He was ordinary, completely and utterly. "They are the dark," he muttered, "cannot tell vhat they vant. All the time, they are bothering me, vatching me-- no, they cannot be afraid." Terror had crept into his voice, and Kostya was unable to bottle it back up now that the dam had broken. "They are vaiting."

She was suddenly a little too close and then a little too closer as she took only his hand and squeezed it. "But I was waiting too." She suddenly stopped, panicking, "I mean um, I'm not a shadow, actually I was going to say something about fighting shadows and how you're a hero, oh no I messed up!"
She panicked and stood up, fidgeting and wringing her hands as she spoke and then suddenly stopped. "Okay," she said to herself, "I'm doing things my way."
Without warning she took off her scarf (rainbows and bright colours) and wrapped it around Kostya's shoulders. "This," she said, suddenly serious again, the cold weather warming her cheeks an making her breath come out in stubborn puffs at the end of each sentence," is a magic scarf. It can do magic and make everyone special, even you. As long as you hold the magic scarf, you don't have to be afraid."
The shadows were, as Kostya predicted, coming. They were attracted to his Fear and grew taller and greater around them. They formed shapes and extended long claws and yet she kept his eyes on him. "Make a wish, Mister Kostya!"

She confounded him at every turn. He did not know her at all-- not her name, not who sent her, not where she came from save for her America accent-- and the girl had invested so much into him. Her faith came in the form of a scarf, wrapped around his shoulders. It was still warm, and smelled like vanilla and cinnamon. You don't have to be afraid.The shadows came, and Kostya looked upon them, long and tall against the bricks. The creatures were real, she had told him so, and he felt his heart pound. You don't have to be afraid.But oh, how it wound around his heart. There was more in this world than could be explained in simple statements of if and then, more to it than the glow of a computer screen. This girl, her smile and her rainbows and her unwavering hope-- she was opening a door. She was dragging him through it, kicking and screaming. "I vish," Kostya whispered, his voice hoarse, his eye shut tight, "I vish I vas strong." zoobey I WISH TO BE A MAGICAL GIRL

Silence, thick and terrible, the feeling of pain and disappointment, the feeling of confusion and horror so thick and palpable it clung and hurt and-
- "Open your eyes Mister Konstatin!"
- And there she was, in her element. It seemed almost ridiculous, a star-pointed shield in her hand that seemed almost too surreal, that strange tone of unbelivable magic that seemed to follow her, that made her more than anything he had ever encountered-
- Just in a single movement the shadows scattered and disappeared. It was no longer dark and she had kept her promise. Her weapon desummoned- dissolved, it felt so natural and part of her, and it brought with it alone so many implications and promises. She was a hero. She was like him but ao much more. Suddenly a thousand more things made more and less sense and suddenly there were a lot less shadows.
There was a tug a his scarf, and she held out her hand again. Behind her, the darkness, but it wasn't terrifying, just unknown. "Let's go Mister Konstatin." She nodded, encouraging. "Let's go make your wish come true!"

He opened his eyes and the shadows had dispersed, and the girl was a light all her own. She held a shield, a beacon of hope and power and something more-- a hope for a better future, a hope to fight what plagued him, any sort of hope at all. She encompassed it, she embodied it, she smiled like the sun and took Kostya off guard in every way.
Mister Konstantin is what she called him, as if he were of any import at all. She left the scarf on him, and Kostya was thoroughly disarmed. The urge to weep almost overcame him, with the sort of relief that came with the realisation that he wasn't mad at all, that he wasn't delusional, that he didn't have to hide any longer. "You," Kostya said, and slipped into his native tongue, " You are the most magical kind of girl." He nodded, once, and took her hand. A flash of rainbow, the smell of cookies, the background of an explosive action movie, the way shadows fled across the bricks. He would remember this day until the day he died. "Okay," he said, nodding once, then twice again. "I vill go. Show me."
