P E R S O N A L I T Y

q u i c k - t h i n k i n g : her senses are even more sharpened, being a Hunter, but when she was just a mortal she was just as on top of the game. Tierney is able to think clearly and act swiftly at the same time, which comes in handy a lot.

a g r e s s i v e: don't even try to pick a fight with her. She'll end it. Usually with her fists. It's been speculated that if she'd been a halfblood, she'd have been a daughter of Ares. Tierney doesn't so much have a temper but a lack of tolerance and a penchant for violence. Just...don't push her, okay?

s t u b b o r n: not one to change her views or back down, Tierney is like a rock. A not moving, solid rock. She'll stand by her stance until the very end, unwavering. As you can probably guess, this can be a problem.

j u d g e m e n t a l : well....yeah. Tierney's pretty quick to form base assumptions of people, usually summed up in one word. Like: weak, stupid, shallow, noble, cheerful, naive, and so on. She will change her mind about you, if you manage to sway her by proving yourself. Actions speak louder than words, especially to her.

l o y a l : she'd never, ever betray her fellow hunters, her patron goddess, Artemis, or her allies. Tierney made a vow long ago, and she has no intentions to break it. She never goes back on her word, and she'll stick with those she's sided for the rest of her immortal life.

f i r m: Tierney is a lot older than she looks, and lot more mature than the teenagers she deals with. She doesn't hesitate to remind the campers that "I'm twenty three, punks!", and she can sometimes act like a stern parent with the hunters she's in charge of, though more often than not she's like their older sister.

c o l l e c t e d : she's a pretty calm person, and keeps it together very well. She's seen a lot and likes thinks of herself as able to handle anything, though that's not always the case. Still, Tierney is usually pretty...sedate. Until there's something to fight.

F A T A L - F L A W

Tierney's fatal flaw is her pride. Her inability to admit that she is wrong and her refusal to accept that she might not be able to handle every situation could one day lead to her demise.

FEARS

She's afraid that one day she will break her vow, and be stripped of her title. She's terrified of falling and love and/or becoming attracted to a man, or a man becoming falling in love or becoming attracted to her.
She's also afraid she'll die in fear. She doesn't want to die scared. She wants to go down fighting until her last breath, and be remembered by all as a legend.

P A S T

Let me tell you a story. This story starts with a little girl named Tierney and her mother, Brynn. Tierney was not planned. She was an unfortunate accident, as her mother liked to put it, and that was how she put it when she was somewhat sober. And that's the censored version. Her mother was fresh out of high school and freshly kicked out of her house. The family were dirt poor and had eight kids living under one roof. As soon as you were eighteen, you were out. College was out of the question for Brynn. She had no money and had just barely made it through high school. She moved in with a friend and got a job as a waitress, and found herself reduced to wearing short skirts and flirting with customers to get extra tip money. One of the customers she flirted with was college student named Alek who flirted right back with the cute waitress in a short skirt and tight shirt, and they ended up hooking up a few times. Not exactly a glamorous love story, but it wasn't love. It wasn't even affection. It was a depressed girl craving attention and an art student who made it his goal to sleep with every reasonably attractive female he laid eyes on.

Brynn was understandably very distraught when the two lines appeared on the cheap pregnancy test from the drug store. And the next one. And the next one. She was three months pregnant and hadn't even realized it, or maybe she had and was just making subconscious excuses for the signs. She went to the doctor and it was confirmed. She was pregnant, and pretty darn sure the father was Alek. She told him, and he gave her a few hundred dollars in cash for the baby and slunk back to art school. Brynn turned to her parents, who told her she could stay with them until the baby was born, but not a day longer. An ultrasound had had doctors convinced the unborn child was a boy. This turned out to be not the case. Brynn, who had five sisters and never really liked other girls to begin with, spitefully gave her baby daughter a fairly....gender neutral sounding name, that would leave teachers forever giving Tierney strange looks when a girl raised her hand for what they assumed was a boy's name during roll call.

Tierney, the little girl with a boy's name, grew up in a variety of situations on the wrong side of the tracks in a small New Hampshire town. Most of them involved a drunk or high mother, who went through bottles of alcohol and various drugs in an attempt to cure the hollow emptiness inside, and who went through men, usually lovers, occasionally boyfriends, just as quickly. The better ones completely ignored Tierney and were decent to her mother. The worse ones.... well, the worse ones screamed and threw things and punched holes in the wall and forced her mother to wear a lot more makeup than usual, to cover up the marks on her body. Tierney wasn't allowed to wear makeup, and usually spent a lot of time in the guidance office at school when her mother was with one of the "worse ones". Her mother always seemed to blame her, when they finally were gone, and Tierney took to barricading herself in her room with some food when she came home from school, lest her mother storm in out of her mind and screaming.

By the time she was twelve she was always dirty, always skin and bones, and always, always angry. She picked fights at school, the majority of which she lost, but she didn't care. Hitting and kicking and scratching was an outlet for the brewing rage inside her. No one messed with her very much, but no one wanted to talk to her either. Teachers watched her like she was a wild animal that might attack at any given moment. She was suspended twice during the course of her middle school years. She tried to get detentions on purpose, so she wouldn't have to go home right after school. And then her mother met Caleb, when Tierney was fifteen. Caleb was a good ten years older than Brynn, and he had a son, too. Derek. Derek was older, a high school drop out. He claimed to be seventeen. Tierney was pretty sure he was at least nineteen. Caleb drank and smoked just as much as her mother did, but he didn't like drugs. This was fortunate, in some ways, because that meant her mother was forced to get rid of them, which reduced some of the chaos. But in other ways, the addition of this man and his son brought even more chaos. Brynn and Caleb eloped, though it didn't really come as a surprise to Tierney. Now she had a father by law, though not by blood. She knew he would never be her father. And Derek would never be her brother. He creeped her out, frankly. The way he looked at her sometimes... it wasn't brotherly, that was for sure.

Caleb was a tyrant. He was only physically abusive with Brynn or Tierney a few times, but the emotional and verbal abuse was far worse. This made Brynn even more prone to lashing out at her daughter. Tierney did her best to avoid everyone in her "family" as much as possible. But that was getting harder and harder, she was beginning to realize with a hollow, sinking feeling, because Derek was always there. Always. He would wait for her in his car in the parking lot after school. She'd go into her own room to find him sitting in her desk chair, smiling at her. If she sat down on the dingy couch to watch television, he would materialize seemingly out of thin air and sit as close to her as possible. The only place she could get away from him, it seemed, was the woods outside her house. She went for long walks in the late afternoon, utterly unconcerned with her own safety, because whatever was out there, well, she preferred it to Derek. By the end of her junior year of high school, things had come to a head. She could feel it. She started awake one night to find her bedroom door wide open. Her step brother was leaning casually against the door frame. Just watching her sleep. She had no idea how long he'd been there for. She threw something at him and hissed for him to get away, because if she screamed out loud and woke up her mother and step father, there'd be hell to pay.

He stepped closer and there was a rushing sound in her ears. Her heart was thumping wildly in her chest. No. No no no. Tierney decided right then and there that there was no way this was going to end well for her. She didn't want to know what his intentions were. He was grinning like the Chesire Cat. She took that as a bad sign, and sprang out of her bed, barefoot, wearing only her pajamas. Her window was was open to let the the late spring night breeze in. Derek made as it to grab her by the arm, and she threw a haphazard punch, thankful her room was on the first floor of the house, because she promptly scrambled out her window and took off running. There was no way he'd follow, she convinced herself. No way. But he did. She took off among the trees of the forest, not caring about hurting her bare feet, only concerned with getting away. He caught up, and she was happy to see that she'd given him a few broken teeth, from the way his mouth was bleeding. She hid behind a large tree, praying to someone, anyone out there that he'd go away, wouldn't find her, would just leave her alone. He was calling out her name mockingly, making false promises that she wasn't in trouble, he forgave her, he wouldn't hurt her... Please, Tierney thought. She looked up at the full moon overhead, gleaming in the night sky. And then everything seemed to...stop.

Derek shut up. The breeze stopped making the leaves in the trees rustle. The crickets stopped chirping. There was absolute silence. And then Tierney saw her. A silver chariot, racing through the trees, pulled by four golden horned deer. The driver was a girl, a beautiful young girl of around twelve. She had auburn hair and silvery yellow eyes that looked luminescent in the night, and she seemed to almost glow. As if the moon shined only on her and her alone. Tierney gaped in astonishment. Derek turned and ran, looking terrified. She could only guess as to what he saw, but whatever it was frightened him away. The girl said her name was Artemis, goddess of the hunt, the moon, the wilderness, chastity, maidenhood and animals. She made an offer to Tierney, who felt like she might faint at that point. To become one of her handmaidens, a Hunter, blessed with eternal youth, unmatched skill in archery, superhuman strength, speed, and dexterity. The only condition was that she never fall in love; remain a maiden forever, and shun the company of men. She would never die of natural causes. The only place she would die was the field of battle. Yes, Tierney said without hesitation. Yes, please, please take me with you. Take me away from here. I will be a Hunter.

And so, seven years later, still seventeen, Tierney was the Lieutenant of the Hunters of Artemis, the head of the handmaidens of the virgin goddess. She was older than most of her fellow hunters, which was part of the reason why she was selected as leader, that and her skill in battle was renowned. Tierney had thrown herself whole-heartedly into being a Hunter, and her dedication had paid off. The little girl was no longer a mere mortal girl. She was a child of Artemis in all but blood.

"I pledge myself to the Goddess Artemis. I turn my back on the company of men, accept eternal maidenhood, and join the Hunt."

O P I N I O N S

L I K E S

* the chase and the hunt: pursuing prey
* archery; she loves competing against her fellow Hunters
* knives; particularly throwing them
* animals, particularly deer, wolves, and hunting birds such as falcons and hawks, which she can understand and communicate to
* video games, which she doesn't get the opportunity to play very often but loves
* the wild, which she and the Hunters roam through almost all the time
* fighting, which she has an intense passion for, be it against monsters or even other people
* competition, which she adores participating in
* the stars, as she can see some past Hunters shining in the night sky on clear nights in the form of constellations

D I S L I K E S

* men, whom she warns the other girls to be wary of and on guard around, lest one of them break their vow to Artemis. There are few men and boys she respects and trusts.
* hot weather, as she loves the winter and snow. Don't challenge her to snowball fight. You won't win.
* urban areas, since they are the bane of the wilderness. She also hates city crowds and pollution.
* reality television. Not that she sees much TV, but don't get her started on "stupid mortals and their antics".
* being told what to by anyone other than Artemis. She's twenty three years old, or at least she would be, and no teenagers are going to boss her around. She doesn't care who their godly parent is.
* being questioned. She needs her Hunters to trust and respect her completely, or they'll go wild. She keeps them on a tight leash for their own good and everyone else's.
* sexism; if you even dare imply that women aren't any bit as capable of men, you'll face the wrath of Tierney. And probably a few angry wolves.
* losing a battle or the trail of prey. She'll be moody for weeks over one escaped Minotaur.
* prophecies, which she feels everyone holds way too much stock in and relies on too much. So what if they always come true? Not everything in life can be predestined. Prophecies make people do stupid things.
