Calias was born to a human mother and a wandering anthropomorphic wolf. Even as an infant he would put himself in danger to protect the other infants that he grew up alongside. That trait would evolve as he grew older, as such he learned a highly defensive style of martial art when he was only seven and mastered it quickly. As a teenager he would stand up to the bullies for those bullied, planting the bullies upon the floor or ground if they were brash enough to try to punch or kick him. When he was eighteen his stepfather got completely smashed and went after his mother with a knife, which prompted him to go to her defense. In the process of protecting his mother he ended up killing his stepfather. Police investigated the death but found that it was clearly in self defense and chose to not charge him at all. It wasn't long after that that he enlisted in the military.

As a member of the military Calias was the team member that stopped hostiles from killing his team, though he rarely shot to kill. In the fifteen years before the experiment he only ever fired a killing shot twice, both times when doing so was the only available option. When he was thirty two the military asked for volunteers to undergo an experimental genetic modification procedure that they thought would allow for what essentially would be called "Super Soldiers." He was one of the first volunteers and during the procedure his fur lost the brown color to become a gray tone. Additionally, but not discovered by the scientists, he gained the ability to regenerate his body from catastrophic injuries, including the loss of limbs. Four years after that he was discharged from the military with a full pension and a slew of medals for the many times he saved his squad mates' lives.
