[Born into a family with a long history in the military, Smith was urged to become a soldier from an early age. Smith was born in Shinganshina while his father was stationed there, along with his uncles and grandfather. Smith spent much of his time under the close eye of his Grandfather, Smith Hammond Sr. The first born male, being Smith's father received the name of Smith Hammond Jr., and in turn, Smith became the Third. (I know, confusing)
Smith spent his childhood learning military tactics and studying the great leaders of the past. When he reached the age of 13, he began combat training, learning hand to hand combat, horseback riding, and swordsmanship. It was in this time that he also began to grow taller, and it was not long at all before he dwarfed even the most fierce, veteran soldiers. With his new height, came new strength, which led to his superb ability in hand to hand. As he grew older, he realized that he would also need to hone his blade skills, and soon sought out the most prestigious trainers he could. Once Smith felt that he was over prepared, he joined the Cadets.
Smith breezed through his training as a cadet, ranking highly in his class. He was placed in the same Scouting squad as his uncle Samson, and began learning to fight in the same way as Samson. On his first mission out, he was faced one on one with a titan after getting thrown off course by an aberrant attack. The battle left Smith's arm severely scarred. Smith decided that he would get a tattoo for every titan he defeated in order to cover up the scars. He now has sleeves on both arms depicting titans and the fallen members of Smith's team fighting the titans. ]
