The AbyssAlso commonly known as 'Hell', this realm is the native home of the Hounds and also of Demons. Ancient stories which speak of its horrendous terrain were really not very far off from the truth, though as for devils and fallen angels, well... that's mostly just the result of a story with too many embellishments in the telling.
It is true, though, that the Abyss is a ravaged realm of fire and scorched earth. Very little grows here, naturally, and it would be a terrible place to behold for anyone unaccustomed to it. It's bad enough for those that do live there, and most of what people know as fact about this place has, like most things, been lost over time. Yet any Summoner might easily be able to get a description from their companion, should they ask.The Darkness Enveloped in thick clouds of smoke, whatever sun might exist here has not been seen for a time longer than memory itself. The world is black, filled only with the flickering tongues of flame that spill forth from the crust of the earth itself. No natural light reaches this place, and foul things have bred and brooded in its darkness for eons.
The Fire In some places, the world burns without end. Great oceans of fire that span the horizons, roiling with waves of heat that crack the air itself and make the earth scream and hiss. Lava pours up from vents in the earth, feeding the flames, which are sometimes so hot that they burn pure white and pale blue, beautiful and terrible in their fury.
Misery The land here is wretched and would be impossible for normal beings to live in. Yet being that they are creatures of magic and energy, themselves, the Hounds have been forced to endure the agony of this place. While not necessarily physically painful to live in, unless one wanders into a fire pit, the oppression of the landscape on the mind is pain enough. On top of that, there are the demons -- the creatures of hate and anger that they war with, constantly. Bitter enemies since the beginning of their earliest shared memories.

Hounds The Hounds, like the demons, are native to this land, along with other smaller, less intelligent, creatures that inhabit the landscape. Though life, in general, is quite limited due to the lack of natural growth and resources. There simply isn't enough food to sustain a large variety of animals such as may be found on Earth. As such, most Hounds opt to remain in their spiritual forms rather than taking on a physical form, which requires energy, and for them to eat. As pure energy, themselves, they are able to sustain themselves longer without a body, but it can leave them vulnerable to attack...
Additional Notes ◘ On Earth, Hounds can only take on a physical form. They're forced to do this in order to retain their bond with their summoner, and to keep from being pulled back to the Abyss. The physical form acts as a sort of anchor to the Earthen realm. ◘ In the Abyss, taking on a physical form was an option. It had it's advantages and disadvantages. Firstly, they had to eat to maintain the form, and hunting was hard going. However, they were more resilient to attacks from demons in a physical form, which acted as a sort of armor against their otherwise exposed spirit essence. ◘ Hounds are not pack creatures, despite their resemblance to earth's canines. They were very territorial and guarded their lands jealously. This is why they breed the way they do. One never knew when two hounds might cross paths but, if it did happen, at least there would be a chance of more hounds being made through the mingling of their energies.

Demons All that we know about demons is from the carvings in the Caverns and whatever legends still exist about them. Of course, the hounds have been able to enlighten their summoners to some extent, but then their own opinions, true or not, could be considered somewhat biased. Below are a few facts that can be universally discerned. However, demons have not been sighted among humans since the Purge many years ago.
Additional Notes ◘ They are generally large creatures that vary in appearance, but are usually about the size of an adult hound. Some species, however, are quite a bit larger than that. As for specifics, most resembled strange beasts unlike anything seen on earth (almost alien, some resembling crosses between mutated animals like lizard/boars, etc) and are easily recognizable. However, unlike the hounds, which all seem to resemble canines, the demons can come in many different forms and mutations - though the reason for this isn't really clear. ◘ Hounds and Demons have always been bitter, mortal, enemies. They fight like cats and dogs and seem to have an innate hatred for one another. Over the eons spent together in the Abyss they have warred, constantly, killing each other and building the enmity until all that's left is the memory of bloodshed. Demons, likewise, have not gained a very positive standing in human history, either, thanks to their invasion during The Purge. ◘ Despite their overall terrible appearance, however, it's understood that Demons are just as capable and intelligent as humans and hounds, and thus are not to be taken lightly. They also seem to be capable of magic, though, as individuals, it is overall weaker than that of a Hound's. ◘ The demon's greatest strength is strength in numbers. They have always outnumbered hounds, but the balance has been kept in check by the hound's overall greater strength as an individual, while the demons were balanced by attacking in groups. Of course, this is why their attack was so devastating for humans who, even in groups, could not hope to match the strength of the demons by themselves.
