Noise. The ancient wood of Laisidhiel creaking in the wind. Hoof beats on the floor. Voices babbling. Heartbeats racing. Children playing. Someone singing. A female giving advice. An elderly talking under their breath...
Twinkletoes could hear it all...
Smells. Flowers. Dirt. Fruit. Nuts. Poultices. Herbal Remedies... Someone's perfume.
... It was all she could do to not curl up in a ball and suffocate herself to keep from being overrun with all these senses. Since going through the ritual her "father" so lovingly requested of them to partake, Twinkletoes had been seemingly blessed with a nightmare.
As a child, she heard and smelled lots of things. She could hear her "father" returning home late at night. Her mother shuffling about in the dark a room over. She could smell whatever fruits or treats the neighboring Pae were having for dinner. It was all so distracting, left her bumping into things. Left her feeling clumsy. Not that she didn't mind the awkward title, her family still loved and adored her all the same. But those distractions were nothing compared to this.
Whatever the ritual did, whatever blessing the spirits gave her, she half wanted to give it back. This was all too much for her frail teen mind to wrap around. She didn't think it would have been possible before, but she could swear now that if she were at the top of the tree she could hear a pin drop on the bottom floor. Conversations were all around her. She didn't need to eavesdrop and tiptoe behind a pair to hear their words from across a room. She didn't even need to be in the general vicinity of her home to know what they were having for lunch, or even what tea Vanya might be brewing up...
She groaned and rolled over in her bed, clutching a pillow tightly to either side of her head, muffling the sounds around her that seemed to echo and vibrate harshly against her eardrums. Those who lived in the tree seemed to have been waking up. It was still early in the morning, but Twinkle swore she could hear Chief Rais already pacing in his study down the hall. Even with the pillow blocking half of the sounds around her.
She grunted and whimpered softly to herself. Her stomach churning to the abundance of smells beginning to waft over her as various fauns began their early morning rituals. Partly because she was hungry... Though, partly because it was just too much to take in all at once.
Slightly defeated, she rolled out of bed and reluctantly placed her pillow back in its place. She needed to slip out for a while. Leave the tree and get some fresh air. She was certain her parents would have a few choice words to say in response, but she just couldn't handle it.
Doing her best to put all her focus on tiptoeing out quietly so as not to wake the others, she managed without accident and sighed deeply with relief. With her home behind her, she descended the tree and made for the door to the outside world.

The outside world gave her some bit of relief. Her senses were still swarming with various sounds and smells, but there were less walls out here. The space out here was open, leaving less of a surface for sounds to ricochet off of and bounce into her fragile ears.
She still heard plenty, but it seemed far less irritating than the constant hustle and bustle of the many who lived within Laisidhiel's walls. There were smells to accomidate, of course... but most of the smells here mostly consisted of nature itself and less of a multitude of different Fauns in one small place.
She could get used to this. It was still a bit much, but it was far more bearable. Perhaps it wouldn't be too farfetched to live outside of the tree. There were a few who did... That big red fellow did. She had heard of his move from overhearing her "father" make a mention to her Uncle Shining.
Her heart sank slightly. If she made the move, she'd leave her parents and siblings behind. Not entirely as she'd allow them to visit, but they were all so very close. And in all honestly, she didn't know a single thing about living on her own... much less how to find a suitable place. Maybe - if she found him - she could ask the big red fellow. He was apparently a good friend of Uncle Shining's and she knew her mother had to at least know him by acquaintance... So he couldn't be bad... right?
She found a fallen log and sat down on it with a sigh. Her family would be heartbroken if she left though. She just knew it. Perhaps moving out would be a silly idea...
Besides, everyone else had found ways to cope with their "gifts". Perhaps she could find a way to block out some of the intensity of her senses? That would be a trick, right? She grumbled and kicked a small pebble with her hoof. The sound of it connecting with her hoof was the equivalent to a crack of a baseball bat to her ears and she cringed slightly. It would be one helluva trick to achieve, that was for sure.
"Why couldn't I have been blessed with becoming a dog like my daddy..." she half grumbled in a whisper and propped her chin in her palms, her elbows gently burrowing into her knee caps...

.... Why couldn't she?
She blinked and tilted her head a bit. She hadn't even thought about trying that before... but she didn't even know where to begin to even try?
Her father had heightened senses. He'd mentioned it before, so it wouldn't be outlandish for her to be able to shift, right? She tapped a finger to her chin and looked around. "Now... how did he say he did it?"
She saw a stick at her hooves and picked it up, looking it over for a moment.
"Okay, Twinkle..." she muttered as she stood and pivoted a bit on her hooves. "Think dog..." She stared at the stick, imagining wagging her tail and chasing after it. That's what dogs did, right? A moment or two passed before she chanced a glance over herself and immediately deflated. Nothing.
She frowned and shifted her weight again, now staring harder at the stick. "Think. Dog!" She stared down the stick hard for a moment or two before growling and biting down on the stick.
Still nothing...
Making a face, she spat the stick out and threw it back on the ground. She then proceeded to wipe her tongue off frantically as the taste of wood left a rather bitter taste to her palette.
"You're doing it wrong!"
Twinkletoes immediately clasped her hands over her ears and whimpered. The sound may have been small and meek to another individual, but to Twinkle... it was as if a megaphone had been at full blast right beside her. It was unexpected and rather sudden, leaving her vulnerable to sounds being louder.
"Oh! I'm so sorry!" whispered the Mellon quietly as it drifted down into her line of sight. "I keep forgetting your blessing was a strong one." it giggled, set on continuing to whisper in soft hushed tones.
Her blessing....?
Her eyes flickered open, landing on the floating little Mellon and blinking a moment before she dared withdraw her hands from her ears.
Her blessing... really? The longer she had it the more she saw it as a curse...
Still, her thoughts were shifted now to the floating little Mellon that appeared out of no where, apparently. She didn't even hear it coming... which was weird. Though, now that she thought about it, she couldn't really hear it floating... But she could smell it now, at least. It's scent was almost identical to her father's Mellon... though different all the same. Like it was a part of her in some way... or something...
"H-How-...?"
"How are you doing it wrong?" it giggled then hovered itself down into a sit in one of Twinkle's palms. "Thinking like a dog or thinking of becoming a dog may work for your father, Missy. But I can assure you, it won't work for you."
"So... I can't become a dog, then?"
She sighed and her ears drooped. That would be so much cooler if she could become something else like her father and her sib--
"I didn't say that."
Her ears perked.
"... Sort of."
She tilted her head slightly. "Then... what are you saying?"
"There's a reason you can hear and smell as well as you do, love. But becoming a 'dog' is not that reason."
"So... I can become something else then? What! Tell me, please!"
"But that would spoil the surprise!"
Twinkle growled then sighed. It was obvious that her Mellon was just as devious about this sort of thing like her father's was. She'd heard him tell the story once or twice.
"So... So what do I have to do...?"

Her Mellon merely shrugged and fluttered about the area aimlessly.
Great... Not only could she not turn into a dog, but her Mellon was being rather difficult and frustrating in the matter. Weren't they supposed to be able to help with these sorts of things? A tour guide into discovering who you are and what you're capable of doing?! Some help they were...
She hit the ground on her knees with a sigh. She grimaced slightly at the resounding thud that echoed into her ears, but shrugged it off.
"Why me...?" she asked. It was a general question any teenager would ask if something in the world was wrong... Her Mellon took her seriously.
"Because it's what the Spirits wished to give you."
Twinkle furrowed her brow and rolled her eyes at her Mellon. Nooo, really?! She knew that already.
The Mellon floated down to stand upon her shoulder. "Don't worry..." it whispered reassuringly. "Yours is a fun one." it giggled and floated off a bit to hover in front of her face.
"Here. Close your eyes..."
Twinkle looked over the Mellon skeptically, but she didn't see any harm in listening to it. With another roll of her eyes, she exhaled in slight annoyance and closed them.
"Good. Now relax." it whispered and floated to sit upon her head, hugging her horn a bit in case she made any random motion to throw it off. Thankfully, Twinkle didn't do any such thing.
"Look deep inside yourself. Somewhere in there is a restless spirit waiting to be unleashed. Your internal primal instincts... If you can find that spirit and hone in on it... Everything will get easier..."
The Mellon fell silent, but Twinkle could still feel the faint weight of it upon her head. Her brow furrowed a bit as she tried to focus on her inner... whatever.
But then... she needed to relax, right? She relaxed, slowly and cautiously, but she managed. She then seemed to fall into a mild meditation as she dove into her mind, searching for that one restless spirit that her Mellon seemed to be so fond of. She was motionless and quiet, allowing the sounds and smells of nature to engulf her. She actually felt... peaceful...? A weird contradiction to the aggravation she felt earlier when trying to get away from everything...
The sounds of nature around her seemed soothing and less deadly to her eardrums. Every sound had a purpose. Every smell had a source and a reason... For some reason, everything suddenly made sense to her...
There was a restlessness that she found that seemed to start from the pit of her stomach and rise into her throat. She felt a shiver rush over her body. It engulfed her at an alarming rate, but then it disappeared just as quickly.
Great... now she had indigestion.
"See? That wasn't so bad!"
Her features skewed. What was it saying? Nothing happened!
She grunted and sighed, opening her eyes and shaking her head. "Maybe I'm just cursed to be clumsy for the rest of my life..." She hung her head with a whimper and blinked....
.... and then blinked again...
Paws?!
At the end of her.... "arms" were two little fuzzy PAWS!!!
She nearly yipped in a mixture of delight and surprise and sprung up to a stand, immediately landing on all fours. She changed!!
She spun in place, looking at every inch she could. She had four legs, fur everywhere, and a humongous tail! It was as big as the rest of her! And the tip looked as if it was dipped in white fur.
A Fox! She was a fox? But... She sat on her haunches and tilted her head quizically. How'd that happen?! Foxes weren't exactly dogs, were they?! She guessed they could be, but--...
Sounds again... Though...
Her ears pivoted on her head and flitted back and forth. All the sounds were the same... but now she heard them differently... It was almost hard to comprehend how to explain the difference to her brain, but for some reason, they made sense...
Her nose twitched. Her sense of smell had altered in much the same way. Smells were intense and everywhere, much like they had before... but they were easier to pinpoint. Easier to determine a blade of grass from a stick. One piece of nature seemed to have a different smell signature than another... much could be same for the sounds...

She tipped her head back and closed her eyes. She focused now on her senses, taking in the unusual familiarity of it all. Funny how before she had a hard time understanding a sound from a smell. Perhaps the fox mind held a firmer grasp on this.
Okay... so think fox?
Her ears flicked to a sound behind her and she relied on instinct, darting almost immediately into the underbrush. Her form balled, tail wrapping almost completely around all four of her feet as she peered over the fuzz of it and out into the open where she just was.
A figure strode into the clearing and paused, looking around before frowning in slight confusion and turning the other way towards the ceremonial grounds. A few moments passed before she realized she had been holding her breath.
"Now why'd you do a silly thing like that?!" her Mellon asked, emerging from the underbrush and turning to face her.
"I-I... I don't know..." she half whispered and emerged herself. "I guess... I-I..."
"You're afraid your own father will not be pleased with your shift."
"N-No!" she started defensively.
Her Mellon's face grew stern and crossed its arms over its chest.
"Look. It's not like he would have recognized me anyways. If I was to jump out of the bushes, the first thing he'd have done was pulled out his axe..." she shuddered softly. "I... I didn't want that on his conscience..."
"Mmhm..." Her Mellon was clearly not buying it.
"Wha-!" She flicked her tail in irritation. "He's got that big meeting thing today! I could make him late! Or... Or worry that there's something wrong with me!"
It was her Mellon's turn to roll her eyes.
In which she rolled hers back in return. "Well... Ok. Maybe a little."
She got up and strode to the far end of the clearing. Her ears pivoted, listening to the fading footfalls of her father. "Just... I want to get a bit more of a hang of this before I tell him, I guess."
She sighed and then shook herself before sitting and wrapping her tail about her paws. "So. Does it work the other way around? Can I just... hone into my inner me and become me again?"
"Why not give it a try?"
Twinkle's eyes flitted over the Mellon skeptically. She felt as though it was hiding something... But she took a deep breath and closed her eyes. She relaxed herself and focused on her... "inner her"...

A few moments passed before she popped open an eye. Looking down, she still saw paws and she frowned.
It didn't work...
She sighed and shook her head. Perhaps there was some sort of distraction........ Now that she thought about it...?
Her head tilted as her eyes focused on the unmoving ground. Problem was... it sounded as though it was moving.... Something was moving under the ground. Many somethings!
Primal curiosity took over and she stood, lowering her ears to the ground. Her nose twitched. Something(s) were moving down there... but what?!
Paws went to work digging furiously at the soil. The sound stopped... Wait! Over there!
Her form sprung, bouncing into the air and pouncing on another patch of loose soil. There was a faint pause before her paws dug quickly there.
She did this a few times until she seemingly struck gold. Her digging revealed a Cicada larva that was crawling its way to the surface. She shook her head and moved away from the commotion with a shudder. Bleh! Bugs!
Wait. What was she doing again?
Oh! Right!
She took another deep breath and sat, closing her eyes and focusing again.

She growled as her second attempt deemed fruitless. This was getting her no where.
"It's not working!" she whimpered and looked around. Her Mellon was no where to be seen. How convenient...
She grumbled to herself and began walking towards the general direction of the tree, though... more so in a pacing manner. She could hear the murmur of voices resonating within and she sighed. She didn't want to return like this...
She growled and plopped her bum down. "One more time. Let me try one more time!" She blinked and looked towards the tree. "... and then I can panic..."
She took a few steady and deep breaths and closed her eyes, trying to close her eyes calmly and dig deep. 'C'mon, Twinkle. You can do this...'

More precious moments passed before she felt that rising pit of her stomach and the shudder to follow. After it passed, she chanced another look at her hands and let out a rather deep sigh of relief...
... that is until she was overwhelmed with the most intense headache she ever thought possible!!
Hands clasped down instantly on her head, applying pressure to her temples and fingers clasping down the bulk of her ears to keep out as much sound as possible. Her figure collapsed on the ground as the migraine took on it's full force on her.
The next few moments were perhaps the most unbearable she'd ever been. If she thought sitting within Laisidhiel during "rush hour" was bad, she was clearly having second thoughts on that now.
Tears streamed down her face as she bit back the urge to vomit. What she would give to be back in her bed right now!! At least then she'd be able to get some comfort from her mother! This was just... it was insane!
She rolled on the ground, trying to find some form of relief before it dulled enough for her to bear with it and sit up. Her hands remained clutched her head as she rocked back and forth.
Perhaps she should go back to the tree. Retreat to her mother and look to her for comfort?
But how would she explain to her what she was doing out of the tree!? She'd more than likely get in trouble for not telling them where she was going first. It wasn't like she was running away permanently... just temporarily to get a break from the chaos.
Only she found a whole new chaos to roll around in. Her form crawled up to the base of a normal tree and she curled up against it. It wasn't like she could see straight anyways. This migraine she'd obtained from literally no where was making sure of that...

Time inched by as the migraine dulled one measly sliver at a time.
Was this the outcome of shifting back? Spirits help her! She hoped that wasn't so... She sniffled and wrapped her arms around her knees. This was a curse! It had to be! She couldn't be herself without being overwhelmed by things a normal faun apparently had no issue with. And she couldn't even be a fox without the sensation of her head being ripped off by an invisible force upon changing back.
She took a deep and trembling breath.
She grimaced and made a face of disgust. The scent of nature around her was melded again. She had a hard time discerning one from another... at least that was back to normal. Well, normal for her anyways.
Another deep and trembling breath...
"You can work on it, you know..."
Her eyes shifted angrily towards her Mellon. She then shifted so that she hugged her knees tighter.
"You're not going to talk to me now?"
If there was a look of pure evil, Twinkle shot it at her Mellon in half a heartbeat. To which the Mellon threw up its hands and sighed. "Alright. Fine. I deserve it. But I know you're listening. You can learn from this! There's a way to use your abilities to help everyone. To find your place. You know that, don't you...?"
Twinkle sniffled and shook her head.
"With enough practice, you can learn to hone in and separate one sound or smell from another. It'll take work... and possibly more painful moments like this one to learn it, but it can be done."
Her Mellon was trying to be positive. She could tell. But she couldn't see any sort of positive outcome at the moment. She needed to be able to see it now, but she just didn't have that luxury. If using her abilities led to more painful episodes like this, what was the point of even trying?!

Twinkle was quite for some time, brewing over this suggestion and disliking it the more she thought on it. What her Mellon suggested was more pain, which meant that the migraines would continue to happen each time she shifted. Wonderful... With that pain and the sensory overload she was currently obtaining, she wasn't sure if that's what she really wanted... much less if she'd be able to endure it long enough to harness this "gift" of hers.
Her Mellon flew over to her head again and perched upon it, giving her 'mane' a gentle pat as if to comfort. It didn't say anything, though. She guessed that it knew she was thinking over what it had said...
Her Migraine ebbed back into a tolerable headache and she heaved a deep sigh of relief.
"I... I need you to do me a favor..." she started finally, eyes lifting slightly to look up.Her Mellon peered over her forehead, and nodded. "Sure! Name it!"She went quiet again and clutched her knees tighter. Then nodded faintly to herself.
"My Father is at a special meeting over at the Sacred Grounds. I don't know how long they'll be at this meeting - please don't interrupt it - but once they're done... Once they start coming back to the tree, find Vanya among them. She's our seer. Tell her... Tell her to come and find me here. I wish to speak with her...""On it!" Her Mellon began to flit off."WAIT!"
She immediately cringed and whimpered, clutching her ears a moment before shaking it off and taking another deep breath.
"Don't... Don't tell my father. Yet. I... I want to talk to him about this later. Just Vanya. No one else. Understand?"Her Mellon frowned a bit, but nodded. "One Seer Lady coming up..." it sighed with a grumble then flitted out of view and off towards the Sacred Grounds.Twinkletoes watched where her Mellon had disappeared to for a moment or two longer before burrowing her head between her knees, trying to block out the sounds and smells around her as she waited.
