I'm talking about cigars/cigarettes.

As an ex smoker, I figured why not ask?
I have heard both sides of the fence on this topic, but I want to know what those in the guild have to say about it.

Is it a sin to smoke those things?
Why/why not?

As far as I know, there isn't anything in scripture that deals specifically with tobacco, but I can't imagine that God would be too pleased with the idea of someone doing something that they know full well is harming their body. Smoking is just not a very good idea.

I'm a smoker, and smoking has to be the stupidest of all stupid addictions. It's more harmful than most things, and it doesn't even get you high. The only reason why I like cigarettes so much is that I'm already addicted to them. So yeah. Smoking is bad, kids.

Islamic scholars have historically had mixed views about tobacco, and until recently, there has not been a clear, unanimous fatwa (legal opinion) to allow or forbid cigarette smoking.
The mixed views on the subject came about because cigarettes are a more recent invention and did not exist at the time of the revelation of the Qur'an in the 7th century A.D. Therefore, one cannot find a verse of Qur'an, or words of the Prophet Muhammad, saying clearly that "cigarette smoking is forbidden."

However, there are many instances where the Qur'an gives us general guidelines, and calls upon us to use our reason and intelligence, and seek guidance from Allah about what is right and wrong. Islamic scholars use their knowledge and judgment to make new legal rulings (fatwa). In the Qur'an, Allah says, “...he [the Prophet] commands them what is just, and forbids them what is evil; he allows them as lawful what is good, and prohibits them from what is bad..." (Qur'an 7:157).

In more recent times, as the dangers of tobacco use have come to be proven beyond any doubt, scholars have become more unanimous in pronouncing tobacco use clearly haram (forbidden) to believers.

I lied when I said smoking was the stupidest addiction. Gambling is the stupidest addiction. It's like being addicted to setting your paycheque on fire before you have a chance to cash it.

But smoking is a close second.

While not something dealt with specifically in Scripture (iirc, tobacco wasn't known to the rest of the world until coming to what is now North America), it doesn't really need to be:

1 Corinthians 6:19-20 (KJV)
19 What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? 20 For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's.

Though the proceeding versus are talking specifically about fornication, these two verses - even in that context - still construe a general truth and do cover other things which were and were not mentioned specifically elsewhere in Scripture (to include tattoo's). My body doesn't belong to me, nor does my wife's body belong to her. We both belong - body, soul, and spirit - to God with our body being the dwelling place (or tabernacle) of God Himself. Anything that defiles that temple could be considered sinful. We do, however, still have free will and can do what we want. Just know we will have to give an accounting for ourselves (and only ourselves) for every word and deed when we come before the judgement seat of Christ.
