The hole left by where the rock had been afforded Smiles the footing she needed to keep moving up. As she moved, she came across another branch sticking jaggedly out of the ravine. Strung across it was another wiry hair. The color matched her's almost exactly, except that it was longer. It was her daughter's! At least her little one was still alive when she made her own trek up the ravine. In her haste to finish the rest of the way upwards, Smiles stepped wrong. She didn't lose any of her progress but she wasn't able to move further either. Her efforts loosed more rocks, and under one of them was the leaf of a tree. Looking at the trees far above her, it was clear that none of them matched the leaf. It had been tracked here by someone. Making note of the leaf with all of her other findings, she kept trying to find a way to keep moving. Still having no luck finding the last bit of route she needed to get over and past this infernal ravine, she kicked a rock in frustration. Underneath was yet another hair. It was long, brittle, and obviously old. It had been there a long time. Again, she wasn't sure how it would help her but it was worth holding on to. In her scramble to get the rest of the way up, Smiles wasn't paying attention. She stepped on another rat's nest, and in her desperation to get away from the angry mother rat she stepped on a loose rock and slid backwards. In her slid backwards, she made the same mistake with another nest. How many rats nesting were there?! In her haste to keep from getting bitten, she slid some more. This was getting ridiculous. The one good thing that came out of all of her sliding was she was forced to find a new way up. In finding her footing she made slow progress, but she was doing it. It ended up being the best route she have found, and she made it to the top. Just as she was cresting the edge of the ravine, she spotted blood spattered across a branch at the top. She wanted so badly to collapse. She wanted to sit, lay down, and rest. There were many things she wanted by this point, but her daughter was at the top of that list. She forced herself to walk farther away from the ravine and closer to the enveloping cypress trees. That was when she heard it. An angry boar. It wasn't her first tangle with one, but she really wasn't sure she was in the condition to fight. Still, she had to keep going ... The boar rushed through the trees and straight towards her. She leapt to the side and bit it on the side. Unfortunately, she hadn't jumped fast enough and the tusks of the wild pig gouged her on the side.
