I crochet and am (very slowly) teaching myself to knit. I taught myself to crochet a few years ago in university and have done it ever since.

My mum crochets like crazy but I have never been able to learn.... It feels so awkward and foreign to hold the crochet hook and yarn and yeah...

I had a hard time learning how to knit when I was younger, and still have problems now from time to time. Crochet I picked up a little easier since each hand is doing something different and that clicked with me. It took me a while to find the method of holding my hook and yarn that felt most natural while allowing me to keep the best tension on the yarn.

If you still wanted to learn, perhaps watch a few Youtube videos to see different techniques and try different methods of holding the hook & yarn until you find one that feels best to you? Then it just becomes a matter of practice.
