Preparation

Before attempting to learn Korean you should assess how far you want to take it and set a goal. Do you want to:

☐ Learn enough to visit overseas
☐ Learn to become friends with native speakers
☐ Learn to have a job/own a business overseas

Now that you know what level you are seeking, what level are you at now?

☐ Beginner
☐ Some vocabulary and grammar
☐ Moderate vocabulary and/or good grammar
☐ Large vocabulary and/or excellent grammar
☐ Advanced learner

Take into consideration that it will take some time to master Korean. How much time are you willing to spend every day?

☐ five to fifteen minutes
☐ half an hour
☐ an hour
☐ multiple times a day for short intervals
☐ multiple times a day for moderate intervals
☐ multiple times a day for long intervals

It is great to know how much you want to learn and how much you are willing to put into learning the language. Reevaluate your goals and how they match up with the other questions. One last thing, how long do you want to be learning the language before you get to your goal?

☐ a short time
☐ half a year
☐ a year

Use this information to create a day to day study plan.

Getting Started

Keep your study plan well in view to motivate yourself and remind yourself to study! It is not important how much you learn, but how much you practice what you already know.

These are basic materials that I suggest you have:

☐ Binder - prevents you from losing important information
☐ Paper/Notebook - for practice writing (an important skill)
☐ Hole puncher - for printed reference sheets
☐ Printer - to print reference sheets for easy access
☐ Colors - makes things interesting
☐ Pens - practice with pens it will increase accuracy

Not all of these are necessary you should at least have a notebook, folder, and pens

Next is to outline your study notebook/sheets of paper. Depending on where you are currently at your sheets should be headed something like this:

☐ Greetings
☐ Helpful Sentences
☐ To Be
☐ Color
☐ Size
☐ Shape
☐ Etc.

or

☐ Verbs
☐ Adjectives
☐ Nouns by Catagory
☐ Places
☐ Grammar
☐ Sentence Structure
☐ Etc.

Stay organized you will love yourself later for it.

Learn a little bit about the culture. Watch a video or two to familiarize yourself with the way the people live. It will give you a better understanding to what you are learning.

Beginners

Always start with the basic greetings. They will help you get into the culture and language easily and you'll be able to recognize them more often because of their common use! I suggest you fill out a page that looks like this:

Start! Basic Greetings:
☐ Hello
☐ Goodbye
☐ Good Morning
☐ Good Afternoon
☐ Good Evening

Next create a list of everyday phrases:

Everyday Phrases:
☐ How are you?
☐ I am good.
☐ Excuse me
☐ Sorry
☐ Thank you
☐ You're Welcome
☐ Yes
☐ No

Then it's time to introduce yourself. Have fun! Create a profile and deck it out it'll help you remember by attaching other senses to the information.

About Me:
☐ What is your name?
☐ My name is.../I am...
☐ Where are you from?
☐ I am from...
☐ What nationality are you?
☐ I am...
☐ It's nice to meet you

These will be important to remember as people are always going to want to know how to address you, but in Korea there are some other things they want to know too:

☐ Are you single/married?
☐ How old are you?
☐ What is your blood type?

These questions are part of the culture and if you don't know why you should watch some more videos just to better understand why someone would ask you that.
