Amelia was doing chores to get away from everything else in the Weyr. Life was busy and crowded with so many people in Trine and she was perfectly willing to help out with the labour. Of course a few people had objected so she'd taken it upon herself to dust and organize one of the many supply sheds dotted around the Weyr's compound.

Hair tied up with a scarf, grungy chore-clothing donned, and work gloves up to her elbows completed her outfit. Smudges of grit and dust streaked her face and clothing as she hauled a barrel full of oil out into the hall and pulled down the second handkerchief over her mouth to breathe deeply of the fresh air. She wasn't sure if this particular room in the storehouses had been cleaned in recent years.

Stretching, she grimaced as her back cracked then sighed in relief as tension eased away.

One of the first things Ethan learned was that any good merchant had to know the territory. All of it. You never knew when someone would be looking for a back alley, or if you needed to know what seedy parts to avoid when traveling, or if you needed to know what seedy parts you'd need to go to in order to fence off some less-than-official goods. A merchant dealt in information above and beyond any goods he traded, and even in that Ethan was still very low in stock.

Trine seemed to do a good job in restricting access to places people weren't allowed to go, or at least they made some of them abundantly clear. Ethan hadn't exactly pushed the boundaries yet - a couple weeks was hardly enough time in the weyr to get good bearings, combined with his orientations - so he was still a fair amount behind any of the older candidates or those who'd grown up there and he had a lot of catching up to do.

He'd seen some of the storehouses during the last several days, but his time there was always so regimented. He figured it would be empty on the day off - it seemed like most of the weyr shut down during this time. What all was in the supply rooms? What was stored in all the sheds? Ethan needed to know. He found the first familiar one, puffed air up into his bangs, opened the door, and stepped into the hallway.

Amelia blinked as someone opened the door to the storehouse and tilted her head, mask half pulled away. From the looks of him, and his curiosity, she suspected he was a Candidate. She inhaled, coughed from the dust and in the process managed to offer a smile and wave. "Hey. Here for chores?" She nudged the barrel further away and turned to face the youth.

Standing at just over six feet, Amelia was a tall, muscular woman with an easy smile. "I'm Amelia. Don't mind the mess. I was bored so I figured I'd kill time being productive."

Ethan hadn't expected to find anyone else here - this place seemed empty. From the way she was decked out, it looked like she was the one here for some chores. "Nope," he replied, taking in the relative giant. "I'm pretty new here, so I'm just trying to learn my way around." Not quite five feet himself, she towered above him, moreso than most adults.

'Kill time being productive,' she'd said... Sounded like she was trying to get in someone's good graces. "I won't," he said. The supplies looked familiar enough. "So what all do they keep in here? I've just seen some empty rooms they needed cleaned for something." He almost forgot himself. "I'm Ethan, by the way."

"Oh? Me to." She smiled again, "Well, Ethan, they keep pretty much everything non-food that's spare in here. Hardware, barrels of oil, linens... and dust apparently." Amelia have a hand and puffed dust off the barrel with a laugh, "See? Are you a new Candidate then? I'm surprised they're Searching when there's no clutch on the Sands..." She glanced out the window thoughtfully.

"You busy? Want to help out?" She fished a spare handkerchief from her pocket and offered it, "What made you decide to try to become a rider?"

Hardware, oil, linens... Ethan made a mental list. "I am," he replied. "I don't know much about how this is all supposed to work. They usually only go Searching when there's a clutch already on the Sands?" He stepped forward and took the spare handkerchief, wrapping it around his face and tying it in back. This was a prime opportunity to gather some more information and scratch someone's back at the same time. A dirty job, but better than some of the other stories he'd heard of what he'd be doing in later weeks. "I just think they're cool, I guess." He shrugged, keeping his real ambition from blurting its way out. That wasn't the way here... not for him yet, at least. "Why not be a rider if you can, and they seem to think you've got a knack for it? I'm not gonna question that." He positioned himself around the opposite side of the barrel from Amelia, awaiting further instruction. "What about you?"

She nodded, "Usually. But I can see them collecting Candidates more frequently in a Weyr like Trine... what with all the Crimsons. They seem to sporadically clutch so you never know if you need some good ol' students to toss at the eggs." At the 'they're cool I guess' Amelia laughed and nodded, "You'll find that's a conservative sentiment when you Impress, I think. And I suppose if you got the opportunity, most would jump at it." Again, she nodded thoughtfully, wondering if things would have been different if she'd been Searched.

Sharath padded around the side of the building, from where she'd been lazing in the shade, and lowered her head to peer in the door. She'd been drawn out of her half-doze by Amelia's train of thought and her eyes whirled blue-green as she looked inside, Who's making you so nostalgic Mine?

"Ah, me? I Impressed a while ago. Her name's Sharath." Amelia gestured at the gold head peering in the door, "This is Ethan! Candidate!"

Sharath inhaled and bobbed her head then lay down in the sun alongside the building, her bulk casting the windows in shadow.

"Help me move the other barrels out so we can dust and sweep everything. The room needs a clean from top to bottom." She jerked a thumb towards the door.

It was like Amelia was speaking a foreign language still. He tried to pick up what he could, but it wasn't much. At least she validated him. That was the important part. "If I impress," he added. Humility was important. Being too cocky wasn't going to get him anywhere, and an important reminder besides. Sometimes investments took time to flourish.

Ethan swung his head fast to catch up with Amelia's gesture. His eyes widened at the sight of the glimmering skin, yellow as the sun itself, the bright, curious eyes, flaring nostrils, and he flashed back to Amelia, his mouth dangling in disbelief. He didn't know much about golds, but he knew they were -important.- Oh, this was big. Valuable. He took a step back, the shadow passing over the windows like a fast cloud. "You... you're... gold..."

She gave her orders and Ethan quickly obeyed. "Yes, ma'am," he said, moving to the first barrel he saw. As he wobbled it to moving and slid it along the floor, he reminded himself - she's not the... what was it? Weyrwoman? She's acting like a normal person. You should act like she is too. "So... uh... um..." He mentally flailed for words, or composure. "If you're new here too, where are you from?"

His expression at Sharath's introduction amused Amelia greatly and she grinned, winking, "Maybe we'll go flying afterwards, if the weather holds. "And I'm a goldrider, not a gold. Though the technincal title is Junior Weyrwoman." Amelia wrinkled her nose, "It's such a clunky title, stuffy. And please, don't call me ma'am. It's Amelia."

I think you startled him, Mine... Sharath piped in privately, obviously amused.

I think so too... Amelia made a face and grinned as she put her weight behind getting a barrel moving out the door, "I'm from High Reaches up north. Transferred here for the opportunities presented, and for a fresh start. It's cold and rainy where we're from. It's okay, I'm not someone you need to fall over your own feet for! Relax Ethan." She opened her arms in what she hoped was a disarming gesture, "Just a person."

Ethan laughed, the idea of a prolonged flight bringing back memories of the very brief excursion he'd taken from Toren to Trine, the ground falling away, the dragon steady, sure. "I'd really like that!" He grunted as he pushed the first barrel through the threshhold. He moved it a little further and wiped his brow as he re-entered the room, a smile on his face, not that Amelia could see it through the handkerchief, but his eyes and calmer shoulders likely gave it away. "Got it. Amelia." He was settled now. It was good to know how she wanted to be addressed. Maybe she wanted to feel more ordinary than she was, some humility of her own.

"Opportunities?" he asked, finding another barrel. The two of them were rather similar. "How'd that happen, after the revolution and all? I can't imagine they're not letting many more outsiders in after that." He tugged it away from the rest and moved around it. "Don't worry about me!" he said brightly. "Sharath just took me by surprise, I think. I've seen dragons around, but not usually a gold." The new normal that was Trine was still setting in. And it dawned on him he'd be doing this tomorrow as well... so much for his day off! But to spend it with a Junior Weyrwoman? And seeing a gold? And making a friend? Worth it.

"Well, if Sharath doesn't mind, we'll take you up after this room is clean then." She answered with a laugh.

A nod. "Yeah... Well, Trine has an open competition to test its Junior Weyrwomen. The one seemed most fit will become the Weyrwoman and we came to pursue that. High Reaches just had a change over for its management and we lost out." She shrugged. Ambition and plotting wasn't really what she was in the mood for right now. "Either way, Sharath and I aim to become the next leaders of this Weyr - for better or worse."

She chuckled, "She can do that, true. Don't let her gruff exterior put you off, she's got a heart of gold. Where are you from? What did you do before you came?" The barrel clunked into place beside his, leaving two more in the corner they were clearing. The ground was lined with cobwebs and thick dust that stretched and sagged as things were moved. A particularly large, hairy spider scampered away after being revealed and Amelia shuddered.

Ethan stopped briefly and his eyes widened a little as Amelia spoke. The next Weyrwoman... even more profitable. She was certainly nice, too. The thud of Amelia's barrel broke his daze. Information was a currency, and it seemed like the market was open on both of them. "I helped my father in his trading post," he said, grunting as he tugged the barrel through the threshold. He clapped the dust on his hands and headed for the next one. "We manage the docks in Toren, in the west of Atlini Hold. Sometimes traders want to avoid the bottleneck at the main port, so they come over our way." Other advantages were met by those passing their goods through Toren, but he didn't want to bore Amelia with the details... or give a future Weyrwoman reason to pay Toren any attention. "I guess I'm doing that again for a while, am I?" The spider skittered away from Amelia and toward Ethan. He stepped to the side, letting it run further away. Better spiders than what the spiders eat, he'd been taught.

His last barrel awaited him, and he did the same as he had with the others - budge it, walk it away, get the momentum started, and keep it moving. It was no different than back home, when his father had sent him to the storerooms. "Do you have a good chance at Weyrwoman, do you think? Are there a lot of other gold riders competing?" he asked.

Amelia gave a brief nod of acknowledgement for a trader's post on the water - it was a foreign concept to her but she'd seen and dealt with traders before so it couldn't possibly be that exotic could it?

She made a thoughtful noise before responding, "I don't know. Possibly? There's at least two other goldriders here both vying for the spot as well. I know very little about them simply because I've been so busy. Sharath would say I have the best chance." She laughed a bit.

"I plan on gaining the position, that's for sure." There was a humble sort of ambition in the air around her as she worked, setting the last large bundle aside to free up the floor. Taking up her broom she began sweeping vigorously, "Wipe the shelves and clear the webs?"

"Do you know what you want to do with your life if you Impress? Search? Watch?" Amelia grinned, "Most boys I knew could see nothing but bronze and the Weyrleader's knots for themselves and that's a valiant goal but it gets irritating."

"Well, you're certainly very nice," Ethan said, lining the barrel up alongside the others. "You'd be a great Weyrwoman, I'm sure!"

He nodded at Amelia's suggestion, acknowledging her with a hum. He wandered out to the hallway and stood as she continued, looking either way, unsure where to find the rags and broom he'd want in order to continue helping. His ears perked at Weyrleader, but was amused at the thought of the two of them co-leading the Weyr, regardless of how far off in the future this would be.

"I'm... really not sure what I'd want to do. The workings of the riders wasn't really much concern back home," he said. "Weyrleader sounds great and all, but I think that's too far ahead to worry about for someone from the outside like me. I don't even know which way it is to the supply closet to get myself a broom!"

She merely smiled and nodded at the vote of confidence, though Sharath's rumble of agreement from outside spoke enough for the both of them. "You've got a good head on your shoulders then - too many boys want that seat and only that seat. If you find something you're good at, go with that, whatever it is. No shame in it." She grinned at his lack of knowledge and jerked her head, "Two doors down, they're in a barrel to the right of the room. Be careful squeezing past the barrels."

As he walked away, she stuck her head out the door, "Say. Has anybody actually given you a tour or anything useful yet? If you're a new arrival, they sometimes do the quick and dirty run down. I sure and shells didn't stick with me the first time." Amelia felt a bit of kinship with the boy - he'd been thrust into a situation he hadn't really been prepared for and while it wasn't exactly the same as what she'd gone through, it was close enough that she wanted to help him.
