PERSONALITY
General: Sam is a bit of a tomboy. For the most part she finds girls to be annoying and believes all they do is spread gossip and start drama. Which is not to say she won't have any friends who are female, but if she thinks you are ditsy or overly girly she'll probably lose interest in you pretty quick. The only exception that she's made to this rule so far is with her friend, Bridgette.
Growing up with a slightly younger (muggle) brother, Sam has always felt it's her duty to protect him and look out for him. They share their love of Doctor Who and classic British television shows, and will often attend muggle comic-con type events and cosplay together.
Sam isn't afraid of defending herself and has often gotten into fights with other students and her friends alike. Fighting seems to just be in her nature, and if she doesn't like you for whatever reason, Sam will let you know without hesitation. Aside from being a little rough around the edges she can also be loving and gentle when she wants to be, and treats her snake for example, like she were her own child.
Habits: Twirling her ponytail when she gets bored.
Hobbies: Watching and collecting classic Doctor Who memorabilia, hanging out with her guy friends and making silly videos and sketches. When she's not spending time with her friends (and boyfriend) she is usually reading manga and practicing her spells. Cosplay is something she enjoys very much but only when there are muggle conventions or special events she can attend - No point making an awesome costume if no one will see it!

Dislikes: Hard work, Tyler Royal Kingston, jokes that imply that women are inferior, red-head jokes, and people who make fun of her friends/family or Doctor Who.

Relationship with Family: Sam shares the closest bond with her father and brother, but is fairly close to all her family members. However she does have screaming matches with her mother whenever possible. She was always a cheeky child and got into trouble a lot so that tends to cause friction in the household. Her mother just wants whats best for her but Sam likes to defy rules and do her own thing most of the time. Her father has just learned to accept this as Sam's way of being herself, but her mother can only shrug these things off occasionally, and tends to get wound up about her behavior at times.
HISTORY
General History: Duncan Bates was born in Ireland and moved to London as a young college student where he met his now wife Emily. It was several years before she revealed to him her secret about being magical, and she was lucky not to get in serious trouble with the Ministry over it. About five years into their relationship Duncan popped the question and they soon welcomed the arrival of their little girl, Sam. Her brother Felix followed three years later. Sam has lived her whole life in London and enjoys the hustle and bustle of the city life.
As a young child Sam was always very skilled at learning the very basic spells her mother taught her, but would often use them to get her way and to make messes around the house. She couldn't wait for the day that her Hogwarts letter would arrive but at the same time she wasn't too keen to abandon her little brother. Felix on the other hand was always happy for his sister and wasn't worried about her leaving him, he'd miss her definitely but he just wanted her to become the best witch she could be... plus it would mean he could have her room for most of the year, though he'd never be game to tell her that.
The day that Sam received her letter from Hogwarts she was so overwhelmed with happiness that she bounced around the room squealing and ended up putting her fist through the wall of her living room. Of course this just started another fight with her mother but Sam didn't care, she merely shouted "I'll fix it later mum!" and ran upstairs to her room to call her boyfriend and closest magical friends. In honor of the situation she even opted to sending the family owl with letters instead of just texting on her muggle phone... though normally she would have preferred this as of course it was much faster.
The meetups between the group leading up to their first day at Hogwarts went from the usual cosplay/silly Doctor Who themed video making to just plain excited conversations. They each couldn't believe that they soon would be learning proper magic and studying at the greatest wizard school in the world! Well, in Sam's opinion it was just that.
MISCELLANEOUS
The Sorting:
"Blahhh blahhh out of bounds, painful death blah blahhh" Sam wasn't really listening as the Headmaster explained the rules. Did he really need to list them all? Was it really essential to tell the first years all the places that were off limits? Surely he realized this would just make them want to go there more. Surely...
Sam sighed and shook her head. She felt uneasy as she glanced around the Great Hall at the older students as they watched eagerly to see which of the first years would be sorted into their houses. Once the headmaster had finished his speech, one by one names were called and various tables cheered as as their house names were announced by the sorting hat. With her last name being "Bates" Sam didn't have to wait long before it was her turn to approach the hat.
"Samantha Bates!"
Sam cringed slightly as they used her full name. She couldn't stand it being said in full; as she usually only heard it like this when she was in some sort of trouble at home.
Pushing her way through the group she made her way to the front and sat down. The sorting hat was lowered onto her head and began to hum to itself as it pondered her fate.
"Hmm yes.... ooh my my... Emily's girl I see... very interesting, yes... hmmm"
Sam found herself pouting as the hat took it's time to debate with itself. She could sense that it could feel her impatience as it seemed to chuckle slightly and take it's time. She had only two houses that she new she would truly be happy in; and that was Slytherin, as it was her mother's house, and Ravenclaw as that's where most of her friends were sorted.
"Yes there is no doubt in my mind that you would be a perfect addition to..........................."
Sam bit her lip in anticipation.
"Slytherin!"
The Slytherin table applauded and cheered with excitement, and Sam sighed with relief. She made her way to her house and sat down beside a group of older students who patted her on the back and congratulated her.
Boggart:
Sam gulped at the sight in front of her. She knew it was just a boggart but the image it had created was just sickening to her stomach. There in front of her was a mirror image of herself, locked in a large metal cage with her mother and various Hogwarts teachers circling her and barking orders. She could hear her mother telling the other version of her how to dress, where she could go and who she could see. It was everything that she feared most; having no will of her own, and being forced to live by someone else's rules.
Mirror of Erised:
Though she has never seen the mirror for herself, Sam knows what it would reflect. She has pictured it many times in her head though she would never reveal this to anyone willingly. In her mind the mirror shows her and her boyfriend at their wedding. She's wearing a long white dress with lace sleeves and holding a bouquet of tiger lillies . In her vision they both look so happy and even though she's only young, Sam knows this is the one thing she wants most in the world. Ah young love!

Patronus: Feminine Bengal Tiger. Her Mother's patronus is the same only a larger (posibly male) tiger emerges.
Greatest Treasure: Her Doctor Who themed messenger bag. It was a gift to her from her father on her 8th Birthday and she carries it with her everywhere. It reminds her of all the days she spent curled up in front of the television with her father watching all the classic episodes of the sci-fi show.
Manner of Dress: She loves wearing corsets and vests over shirts, usually with jeans with strappy shoes or sandals. She always wears large and outrageous earrings and ties her hair back in a messy ponytail.
