On the surface: One of Serenity's key traits is that she is so painstakingly curious that it usually ends up getting her in trouble. She has had this sort of personality ever since she was a child and still has yet to really grow out of it. This coupled with her determination made her very hard to sway from something she was curious about and would pursue it till the end. This was how she decided to become a Pokemon Trainer (of sorts) and get to know Pokemon better than most people. Of course she could understand Pokemon just fine since she had the ability to talk to them in her mind. Other than that she was a regularly, nice but very intelligent girl who looked up to the Legendaries since a very young age.
Unfortunately, though, she is stubborn and if there's someone she doesn't like or hates she won't give them what they want, especially if it's premonitions. Also since she's a psychic she has the potential to get possessed but that often doesn't happen because Yokai, her Gastly, protects her from other ghosts. She is most susceptible when making premonitions but it's always a risk because she often keeps her mind clear. Also during five days of each month Serenity isn't able to use her powers or even communicate with Pokemon. It's a pain but she's learned to deal with it, but she makes sure not to let anyone know about it
But deep down: Serenity grew up with only her father in Lavender Town, taking up his steps to become a psychic like himself and watch over the Pokemon Tower like he did. She did love her future job even though hearing the thoughts of both Pokemon and human spirits and the visions of the future freaked her out quite a lot and she always broke things because she would unintentionally lift objects and throw them all over the place. In fact she didn't get much sleep while growing up, developing bad sleeping patterns that had her staying up through early morning and mid afternoon before falling asleep. She would even sleep with her dad most nights because of what she would hear and see, it was getting hard on her and her father wasn't sure what to do about it. The only way to do anything was to seal most of her power away so that she wouldn't be so sleep deprived. He knew she loved her gift but it was too much for her to bare.
Eventually he had a talk with her and they both agreed that her powers needed to be sealed, at least most of them anyway. Her father put the seal on her so that the only powers she could use was talking to Pokemon and looking into the brief future. This caused an almost immediate improvement in her health and soon she was having a wonderful time as a young child. She was training and experiencing the life a child should before she grew up into a young woman. Of course she had many happy times in her life, especially when she met Yokai for the first time. This was was about when she was around seven years old (before her powers were sealed) and she was exploring around the shrine by herself.
While walking by herself she was attacked by five human ghosts trying to possess her since she was like a beacon of light for them to be attracted to. While this was happening a Gastly was floating by and saw the child getting bombarded, trying to fend them off with her, now, weak powers only to fail. The Gastly was, just as the ghosts were, attracted by the young girl and tried to possess her as well. But before she could get possessed by him he had to get the others away from her first, so he fought them off until he was too exhausted to fight anymore. When it was over the poor Gastly was injured and, even though she was tired and weak, Serenity took it to the Pokemon Center and waited for it to get healed. Thankfully it was alright and was released the next day in the wild. But it stuck around near the Tower, checking on Serenity every once in a while. Wondering why she would take care of him when she didn't even know him or why she wasn't even scared of him. Even when she found out he could talk.
As he hung out with her he saw that she was less wanting to be a psychic like her dad and more like a Pokemon researcher. More importantly she wanted to study the connections of the Legendaries to one another and to humanity. Since she was able to understand Pokemon she felt like she could help bridge the gap between the two worlds. Which was when when she was old enough she took Yokai with her to travel around and get a better understanding of Pokemon and of the Legendaries.
