Alan Turing Must Be Pardoned, Demands House of Lords
I am a longtime encryption enthusiast, and as such one idol of mine is Alan Turing, famous as the man who cracked the Enigma. Rather than celebrate his heroic achievement during times of war (which might very well have saved thousands, or even millions, of people) he was disgraced and sentenced to "chemical castration for the crime of gross indecency." His crime? Being gay.
Almost 60 years after his suicide in 1954, the House of Lords is finally working towards a posthumous pardon for his "crime."
I look at this and find it sad that we are looking at a posthumous pardon for a false crime. I think in a better world, we would be looking at a bio of the hero who cracked the Enigma codes during World War 2 and beyond.
