To people writing in this thread: It doesn't help us if we are ignorantly writing answers to Opera Ghost's questions. I know your hearts are in the right place, but confusing Hermeticism with the words Hermit or Heretic don't help anyone. If you don't know the meaning of a word, look it up in the dictionary, or Wikipedia or somewhere.
To Opera Ghost: Learning about other religions can be a rewarding experience that can help us better understand and get along with our brothers and sisters of other religions.
As Mormons we know what weird and false ideas that people have about us, but we need to remember than we don't do our homework, we will probably have weird and false ideas about other religions.
However, learning about another religion is a lot different than joining it. In the interview before you get baptised, and also in the temple recommend interview, you are asked if you are a member of, or are associated with any organisations with teachings not in harmony with the Gospel.
In our ward we had a born-again Christian come along, have the missionary discussions, and want to be baptised, however, he didn't end up getting baptised because wasn't allowed to while he still wanted to be a member of his old church.
We need to trust God that all the religion we need will come through the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Picking and choosing parts of several religions is prideful in the way that we aren't trusting that God knows what we need to learn, but we say that we want to learn this good part from this religion, and this good part from that religion. We need to realise that God knows what's better for us than what we think we know what's good for us.
When Adam was offering sacrifices, an angel appeared to him, and asked him why he was offering sacrifices. He said: " I know not, save the Lord commanded me." (see Moses 5:6) We need to have that same faith in the Lord, and realise that even though we may not understand the meaning of things, the Lord knows why we has taught us what he has taught us.
Although other religions have a lot of good in them, if Jesus Christ isn't at the head of them, then the devil is. The devil will tell you a hundred truths just to get you to believe a single lie. That's why this branch of the occult (your words) seems to fit so well with our teachings.
The church of the devil is almost a mirror image of the Church of God, with the difference being who leads each church. The church of the devil believes that evil will prevail, and the Church of God knows that God will prevail.
While the prophet may have enough faith to withstand the lyings of the adversary, you and I may not have that much faith. While I have studied and learned the teachings of other churches such as Islam, and Catholicism, I stay well away from any occult literature, because I don't want to be caught believing the one lie in amongst the hundred truths.
I know that the only true reliable source of truth is from God, and the fullness of his truth is found in only one place, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. For Jesus is the Head, and He will only lead us in a direction that leads back to our Heavenly Father. Gordon B. Hinckley is the only person on the earth at the moment to speak in His place, and by following the counsel he gives us, we will come closer to our Heavenly Father and Jesus.

I love the part about how if we don't study, then our ideas about their churches will be jsut as stupid and silly as their ideas for our church!

My bishop told me that i have more power in my little fingers tip than the pope! That is because i have the priesthood and im glad i have it, unfortunately i havnt been the best mormon recently as ive been in a bad mood and having fights with my friends and listening to music i shouldnt really listen to but im going to adjust to make myself better so that i can use the only true power on the earth wisely.
using your power with other religions wouldnt be wise, kinda of like mixing jam with marmite, the priesthood only goes well with it self and the church (being peanut butter!)
But use the power you have well! i may be young but im not stupid enough to think about having a second religion
Not saying your stupid but you arent wise to use your priesthood with other religions!
stick with the church, we still ala have much to learn

In my own personal experience I have done a lot of studying into Buddhism. Not because I believe in their God (for the branch of Buddhism that has a God), or their view of the afterlife(s), but the teachings that they follow here in this life. Learning about the four tenats and whatnot has, I think, helped me to have a better understanding of the world and has changed my approach to myself and other people, becoming kinder and such.
However, I only take it that far. When you take another religon's ideas as a PHILOSOPHY and not a religon, you can learn from them and better yourself in the eyes of God and become a better member of God's true church. When you take those ideas and put the religous background behind it, you are only asking for trouble. Buddha himself taught not as a strict religon, but a new way to free yourself from the Hindu beliefs that he believed were false, yet still have a basis of sanity and kindness to your life.
However, don't try to take other Christian churches' beliefs as a philiosphy, because then that can mess with the beliefs we in the LDS church hold. They often only follow some of the teachings of Christ but pervert the actual religon behind it all, mixing the false-ness with the truth.

For the meditation and stuff. >.<

Religion, the way I see you use it is so loosely, like something you practice when you feel like it. I'm not saying that's how it is for you, that's just the feeling I get from your choice of words. Now, for me, a religion is one's way of life. It is how I live my life, wouldn't you agree? Personal rules set for oneself to help them attain a certain life goal. Now, when you replace religion with "way of life" it's like saying, "can I have two ways of life?" Can you? I'm extrememly interested in Shintoism, Daoism, and concepts of martial arts, but they do not replace meanings or goals from my faith. They add to my testimony that all things testify of God. I take things that I see that coincide with my life, my faith, and it adds to the enriching and fullfillment of my life. Like the well known example, if your standing on a line that is shaped like a very long V, eventually, you will come to a place where you can no longer stand on both sides. You must choose for yourself which line you will follow, or you may find yourself carreening off of both.
