I've been wanting to do my cosplay (which I'm going to wear this Sunday ^_^ so excited!) for a really long time, but the thing is this - I can't sew. : not a costume, anyway. I can sew the little things, come up with creative ideas for the accesorries, but the outfit itself...? I'd be scared to walk around with it. I'd actually love to go to one of my grandma's and work with them but they're old and sick, and my mom is as sowing-impaired as I am.
So for the dress of my costume I went to the sowing-lady. She's a really nice person (but a bit expensive..). We (me and my mom, she loves projects like this razz ) went to a material shop and picked out the exact materials we need, and we talked with the sowing-lady for a looong time, explaining exactly what we want (she's just doing the base, it's expensive enough as it is), and went about 4 times just to drop by more materials, measure, etc etc.
So the big question is - Is this concidered cheating? I feel awful for not having made the entire costume myself. It still feels special, because I put a lot of effort into the little details and spent half an hour for just picking the darn buttons (the shop barely has any ><), but it still feels a little like cheating.

Hey, not everyone can sew. A lot of people get commission costumes done, there are actually some people in these forums that do commissions I think ^.^ My friend had her costume made by our other friend's mother and another had his done by a lady friend up the street. I don't think its cheating. there are some costumes that I would seriously get commissioned instead of making myself ^.^

Cosplay is costume play. You wear a costume and have fun. Whether or not you made the costume doesn't make any difference. Once you start entering contests with that costume, it starts becoming a different issue, but if you're buying it to wear it to a con, then it's definitely not considered cheating. Many cosplayers buy their costumes, especially in Japan. They even have specialty cosplay stores there.

All of my costumes up until the Yuffie ones are commission costumes. I got sick of it being so expensive so I decided to do it myself lol. I't about immitating a character . . . so no. You're not cheating.
