I have a question! Torment is described as a form of karmic payback for a terrible past deed during the mortal life before deityhood, and as such consists in a painful hindrance to the otherwise 'normal' functioning of the deity. So, does that mean all of the deities did something horrible or something tragic happened to them before they transcended? Happy, joyful beings leading a pious or altruistic life performing acts of extreme good and passing away in their sleep, to put it the most exaggerated ways possible, aren't eligible to transcend? And, if they are, why should they have to suffer a painful Torment if they have done nothing to induce bad karma?
