Rivener could tell Doe wasn't all that sure HOW Revontulet fed, but likely the Frei didn't realize it was happening herself, either. At least they knew it was an at-night event, and that meant part of her was definitely a night-time thing. She wasn't made of stars, though now that Rivener thought about it, she DID seem... tasty. Maybe he should avoid kissing her the way he'd kissed Prajna the first time they met, then. Best to not find out if he actually COULD feed from her.

Her reaction to his request to touch her in return was adorable. Whatever protest she had been about to put up (about what? About not touching his rune? Ahhhh, as a young one, she might be in the stage of wanting to do things even MORE when told she couldn't?) was suddenly quite forgotten as she fluttered with excitement. The wings and the way they moved were quite interesting, and Rivener laughed softly as she resorted to his nickname. "Alright then. You can touch me, and I can touch you, agreed." It was important, he thought, to make her feel like they were AGREEING to things. Give her the feeling that she was in control of her own decisions.

He reached out without further preamble, long black-clawed fingers curling first into that two-tone hair, capturing a lock of it so he could rub it between his fingers. His eyebrows rose. It felt like nothing he'd ever really felt before. Not like normal hair, anyway! It was almost like.... hm. What could it be. Oh! He grinned as he realized it: it felt like tiny microscopic strands of fiber-optics! And as he watched it in the light, depending on how he turned it, the color shifted! It must be more than fascinating to watch her hair change depending on the time of day, or of night. Or even where they stood! Likely a brightly-lit room like this would make different hues than in a cold-lit mall, for instance.

"Your hair is REALLY neat, Rev. I like it a lot!" He turned his gaze from her hair to her eyes, giving her a broad grin. "It's very pretty, and very special!"

The other thing that had fascinated him was within reach now too, so he moved his hand to her wings, poking one and raising an eyebrow in surprise. It was a lot more solid than he'd first thought. Less like a gossamer butterfly, and more like a thin pane of colored glass, or something! He ran a finger along the edge and tried to wriggle one of the segments lightly. This was really interesting! He grinned, enjoying himself so thoroughly now that he shifted in his seat to face her better, eyes examining that wing closely. "What ARE you made of, Rev? Does she know?" He turned to Doe when he asked that question, directing it to her. He was suddenly reminded that some guardians for some reason kept that information from their charges. Like Eiry, like Cordelia. Riv never really understood that, but maybe Doe was one of those people. Maybe this was a question he shouldn't have asked. But he was SO curious!

It was hard to pin-point exact what Revontulet was made up of. Although the aurora appeared at night, they were not of the night, only best seen at those times. They were energized particles interacting with the earth’s atmosphere and dictated by things like solar wind. In their natural state they are a form of light, sometimes bright enough to read a newspaper from, but Ren’s essence was made not of light but of liquid. As such, she was a mutt; neither a true creature of the night nor a true creature of light or liquid.

The newborn’s preference for night stemmed mainly from the more quiet nature of the time, as well as her enjoyment of moonlight over sunlight when feeding. Unlike the sun, which had a strong, acidic flavour in her opinion, the moon was soft, smooth, delicious. Like a perfectly made panna cotta. And the colours were nicer at night. Beautiful blues and greens tinted pale from the soft silver of the moon and the stars. The world seemed to both shimmer and obscure itself at night unlike the daylight, where everything was sharply on display, garish and ugly.

Revon was deciding very quickly that Rivener was her favourite. She would need to remember how to appease him. Not only was he willing to let her touch him, to let her ask questions, but he also asked questions of Ren, seemed interested in her (which he should be), and let her feel in control of at least some things. “Yes, the aurora said proudly, turning her head up and to the side slightly so a few locks of hair would catch a certain sunbeam and make her hair twinkle with a million different shades of blue. It was not the best, as Ren would have preferred he saw her hair in the moonlight or after she had fed, but it would do well enough.

Playfully, once she knew he had had his fill of looking, or even slightly before, Revontulet fluttered her wings, batting them against his fingers like little butterfly kisses and buffering him with the slightest bit of wind stirred up. A smile graced her lips as she did so, but the question made her curious and she looked to Doucette. The guardian was not often one that the newborn asked for direction. It was not that she did not find the redhead lacking in any way – simply that it never occurred to her to consult the older woman.

What did he mean ‘made of’?

Doucette blushed deeply at the strange look from Ren, her blue eyes empty and calculating. The look, despite the sweet smile, always made the woman a bit uncomfortable. It was the look that said things could go one of two ways and Doe only hoped she knew which was this was going to go.

Don’t you remember? She is liquid aurora borealis,” the Irish woman replied, grinning perhaps a bit too widely. Surely she had shown Rivener the essence before? And unfortunately the two had never had the talk of where Ren came from and what she was made of. It was not that she was keeping it from her, simply that the guardian didn’t know the best time to bring up that while every other raeven she knew had an actual soul, her poor darling was nothing but a rock. A pretty rock, certainly, but a rock all the same.

Ah. He shouldn't have asked. He could tell they were quite close to stepping on a landmine, if they hadn't already. Rev was all curious, looking at Doe, and Doucette was avoiding one of the key elements that should be making up Revontulet, only mentioning the aurora. Now the Scorpion recalled! Yes, she'd nearly dropped that poor bottle the first time they'd met. No wonder she seemed like she might be tasty. He ate the light from the night sky, and Aurora borealis would be a flavor he'd never tasted.... Not that he was GOING to.

"Oh, right, I remember now. It was a very pretty thing." He turned to Revontulet again, all smiles, hoping to distract her and appease her curiosity so Doucette wouldn't have to deal with questions she wasn't wanting to answer. "That's a thing in the night sky, yes? I'm made from night sky too- a piece of rock with the stars in it. So we're made of a lot of same stuff, you and I. Maybe that means we're going to be good friends, hm?"

To be perfectly honest, he was already quite charmed with the girl. She was just delightful, pleasant, and that smile could win over an iceberg. Rivener chuckled and reached up to poke at her flower-and-stone tiara, inclining his head. What were those? "Do you have any questions for ME, Rev? You are a pretty quiet one, so far. Not that there's anything wrong with that! I just wanted to make sure you're not just being quiet because Doucette and I talk too much." This last he'd said as a stage-whisper, winking at the Frei like this was their secret.

Doucette was sure she had also called the scorpion, leaving a bumbling message about her assumed capture of a jellyfish soul before realizing she’d made a horrible mistake and captured something quite out of the ordinary indeed. Certainly, one day, the woman would have a talk with her frei, but she wanted to make sure the girl was doing well, had made friends. Already the redhead was terrified of the possibility that her charge would discover the truth and react poorly; but she would never keep the information a secret from her either. Ren had a right to know, and it was sure to come up in other conversation as well...

A little furrow grew between the aurora’s brows as she watched the other woman’s reaction. On the one hand, she seemed as though she were hiding something, but on the other, her guardian often appeared overly flustered and uncomfortable. An emotion Revontulet did not comprehend in the slightest. It was obvious that, even if she felt out of her element, this newborn kept a certain composure about her. Flustered simply would not suit her at all.

But she did not understand what this aurora was, or what it had to do with her, until Rivener explained about being part of the night sky. Once again her features brightened and her wings lifted off her back, as expressive and readable as her face. “The same,” Revon repeated, the words happy on her tongue. She had not met anyone the same as her, “I want to be very good friends,” she said, leaning forward and looking at him with the sort of hope only children wear.

At the comment of her quietness, Doucette gave a little laugh, waving her hand a little, “This is downright chatty for her, Rivener! I’m really happy to see her speaking so much. She didn’t say a word to Cesc or Anya and it took quite a while for her to say anything to me.” Just when she had begun to grow worried about her frei she’d begun speaking, only a few words here and there at first, but perfectly formed, beautiful and controlled just like her.

With a quick, little look out of the corner of her eye, hardly noticeable, Ren let her displeasure show that Doucette had interrupted the quiet secret between herself and Rivener. But her charm was back as if it had been only a temporary flicker and she nodded in agreement, her hair cascading across her shoulders in rippling blues and greens. “Doucette talks a lot,” the aurora confirmed with a smile, “But I like to save my words. They should be important.

Tell me about the aurora” Revontulet said next, sure that she liked the word and wanting to know what this was, this thing that she was made of.

Rivener grinned at Doe's comments about her Frei being chatty. Oh, good! He'd be worried he might have been overwhelming her by speaking so much. The blue-green Frei was agreeing to be friends, GOOD friends, and looking so adorably hopeful it just made Rivener want to plop her into his lap and ruffle her hair like he saw many big brothers do to their young siblings. For today he settled on a hearty, happy laugh: surely she wouldn't like her hair being mussed.

"That is a very good thing, saving your words. It makes people feel special to hear them!" He nodded and purposefully looked proud, his wings giving a rustle. When she asked him to tell her about the aurora, he was more than delighted to take on the role of teacher. He glanced around real quick for a computer, thinking it would be best to show her pictures, but then he realized his phone would be a perfectly suitable search engine! Settling back on the sofa, he retrieved the device from his pocket and flipped it open, checking the signal. Weak, but serviceable! "I can show you pictures of it!" he declared happily. "Just give me a moment to find them."

Typing took a long time. Maybe it was about time he upgraded to a proper smartphone, seeing as he used this so much. Eventually he managed to dial into the web browser and located a few pictures which he then downloaded to his phone. He hoped the girl wouldn't mind the wait. Once he had 6 different images, which seemed a good amount, he closed his browser and went to the photos section, selecting only the new folder to make sure he didn't show any of his personal pictures. He crooked a finger for Rev to come closer and look at the little lcd screen. "This is aurora borealis! It happens in the night sky in the far northern parts of the world. Here it's only a still picture, but in real life it moves and shifts and looks like ribbons of color dancing across the sky! It's very beautiful, and you should be quite proud to be made from this stuff."

Revontulet clasped her hands together in her ‘lap’ and looked pleased, delighted that she’d made him laugh with her comment. “Yes, they should be special,” she agreed with a little nod of her head. When he pulled out the little device she couldn’t help but let her curiosity take over and she moved forward a bit, watching his movements with rapt attention but without prying to view the screen. The way his fingers moved across the face of the item and the way it reacted to him was enchanting. She would have to remember to ask more about it.

It was a good thing Rivener had brought his own phone to look up the pictures, for Doucette’s home was decidedly low-tech. There wasn’t a computer in sight and the TV that Ren had paused the black and white movie on looked like it had escaped from a time-warp. The redhead lived simply and didn’t mind. She rarely needed a computer for anything, and had given in to getting a cell phone a little while back when she realized just how difficult it could be living on an island without a cell to keep in contact with people.

At the sight of the aurora her lips parted to let a little gasp of shock and delight escape her, fingers reaching for the phone without realizing it may be impolite. It was beautiful and ethereal and mystical. Ren’s wings gave a flutter of excitement as she stared at one for a long, long moment, either unaware she could change the picture to another or not caring that there were more.

She was made from this? Revon shifted her gaze from the picture to her hand, turning it in the light and studying the pale, smooth surface and the nails she’d recently painted a robin’s egg blue. “How can I be made of it?” she asked, turning her attention to Rivener, one hand still held upright while the other held onto the phone. Apparently she felt that every part of her should reflect this amazing, majestic image.

Rivener let her take the phone, though he made sure at first that she could hold it securely enough to keep from dropping it. When that was confirmed, he settled back with a smile, watching her reactions. He chuckled at her wonder, eyes crinkling in amusement as she stared at her own skin as though trying to see past it and into the magic within. She wasn't changing the pictures, and the Sigel did assume it was because she didn't know how. When the girl asked her eventual question, the dark Scorpion leaned forward to pluck the phone gently from her, pointing out the button to change to the next picture.

"I got you six pictures to look at, you can press here and it will go to the next in the bundle. When it reaches the last one it'll go back to the fist again. And I'm not sure HOW we're made. We're created with a lot of science and magic in the process, so I'm really not sure." He let her have the phone again when she knew how to change the images, settling back with one arm draped across the back the sofa, keeping himself near her so he could look at the screen sometimes too. "You're made of that part, and I'm made of the rest of the night sky. The blackness with all the little diamond-dots of starlight, that's what I am." He'd almost added -and a Scorpion, but he kept his mouth shut out of consideration for the Secret Doucette was still keeping.

"It's pretty, yeah? And I can kind of see it. Your eyes are bright and shimmery, and your hair is VERY much like that. Waves of elegant colors." He grinned, aware that he was dishing out compliments, but they were warranted! "All of us Raevans are made up of amazing things. Sometimes it's obvious what it is, and sometimes it's not obvious. And it's usually not something you talk about, because some Raevans don't even get to KNOW what they're made of. So you can think of it as a game: try to guess for yourself, quietly, inside. Then when you're good friends, the same way WE are good friends," he winked at her happily, "then you can ask. It's polite that way. And you always have to be polite, hm?"

Once the phone was in her possession again she began clicking through the images one after another, enchanted by the different shapes and colours this aurora created in the inky sky. The blue and green ones were much preferred over the other pink and orange tones, but since apparently she wasn’t made up of any of those kinds of aurora, she didn’t mind so much. A good thing too that Rivener’s phone wasn’t a smartphone, for surely her cool skin would not have registered as flesh on the screen and she’d not have had such a rapt expression of happiness on her features as she did now with each new click of that special button.

Riv does not look like night sky either,” she said over the uncomfortable ending v, the words almost a question but almost an accusation as well, as she looked up from the phone. “You have some black, but a lot of red. And you are very sharp.” He had a look that could almost be called dangerous, but certainly the night sky with its soft, twinkling stars and smooth milky way could not be considered dangerous in the same way he was.

Doucette bit her lip and muttered something about getting drinks, disappearing into the kitchen without waiting for a refusal of the offer.

The scorpion’s words distracted the aurora once again however and her wings gave a little twitch of interest at his suggestion of making it a game. Ren wiggled forward more, her bare shoulder touching his and her attention shared between him and the phone she clutched in her hands. “Do you know what they all are?” she asked, appealing to the older nature of the raevan and his knowledge. “Can I guess in my head and then tell you later? Will you tell me if I’m right?

Revontulet smiled broadly at her friend. She had liked Cesc and Anya, though she had not talked and she had been but a few hours old. And she’d liked the ink monster she’d met, but without having gotten a name she thought she may never see them again. Rivener was her first friend.

Riv chuckled as she began clicking through the pictures, looking so happy, but he cut himself short as she spoke again. Ahaaa, she was sharp, this one. Riv's eyes flicked to Doe for a moment but he looked back before Rev noticed, he hoped. "Ahhh, well. Yes, we are made of some parts of the night sky, but we're Raevans so we aren't JUST that bit of magic. There's other things too." And he could leave it at that, he hoped.

She was asking him if he knew what they all were, and Riv had to chuckle again, shaking his head. "No, I'm afraid not, Rev. I know SOME of them, but not many. And it's not something we usually bring up. So sadly I wouldn't be able to tell you if you're right, for most of them. But we could still tell each other what we think, and maybe someday when we find out the truth, we can see if we were right. We'll be playing the game together! How about that?" He grinned, suddenly quite enthused for the idea. Like a long-term project! She was such a charming little thing, surely she'd make tons of friends and be able to ask, someday. He could also start asking his own closest friends, though most he already knew either from talking to them or interacting enough or the Star-Speak...

"But we can't rush it. No asking people before we're sure that they will be okay with telling us. Deal?" He extended his hand for a shake, looking playfully serious.

Revontulet pulled the phone close to her chest once she’d finally finished looking at the pictures. She wasn’t stupid enough to think she could keep the beautiful things, but neither was the newborn happy about having to give up something which delighted her so. Already she’d forgotten or stopped caring about this other magic and what made him different from the night sky. It seemed he wasn’t willing to tell her and she was ok with that for now. Eventually she’d find out the truth and it would likely be Doucette who finally spilled the beans.

Anya is a spider,” she said, a bit out of the blue and unaware that the spider was a different kind of ‘made of’ than the other part. Lifting one hand the girl tip-toed her fingers in the air like a spiders legs taking slow, deliberate steps. Although this was not fact per say, she felt it was the truth. “Anya calls me Revon.” She liked the nickname, though the aurora was unaware of the reason for it. To the newborn, she’d simply assumed it was an additional name to go by and tell people. It was simple, but left out the delicate ‘tu’ she enjoyed pronouncing so much when she gave her full name.

While Rivener talked she’d retreated inside herself, thoughtful for a long moment. Again it seemed like she wasn’t going to reply to his question until, like moon rising in the night sky, she appeared to wake back up. “Yes, a deal,” Ren replied, unable to remain pretend-stoic as he had so she grinned brightly instead.

With one hand in his and the other clutching his phone to her chest still she leaned up and kissed him lightly on the cheek without warning. Because that’s what beautiful women in movies did when a deal was made, wasn’t it?

Rivener's eyebrows rose. Rev knew Anya! And knew that she was a spider! Likely that wasn't the part that equated their night-sky essences, but it was still correct, and he was more than happy to let her go on thinking each Raevan was only one thing for now. He grinned. "Why yes she is. I think that too." And even more surprising, Anya gave Revontulet a nickname? She must really like the fluid-haired aurora girl. "Sounds like you two are friends too!"

She agreed to the deal then and shook his hand, grinning like mid-day. Another surprise followed as she kissed his cheek! With a laugh Rivener looked at her, ruby eyes sparkling with amusement. "Then it's a deal! ...I'm sorry, Rev, but I'm going to need my phone back eventually. You can keep it until I have to go, okay? And the next time I come visit you, I'll bring you a present. One that will have pictures like this on it, so you can look at them whenever you like. Okay?"

He settled back on the sofa, making himself comfortable. "So what were you watching?" he said, pointing towards the television. "I watch a lot of TV too. Do you have a favorite show?"
PostPosted: Tue Jul 02, 2013 10:04 am

Something of a smug expression crossed the moonstone’s features and she puffed up with another little flutter of the sea-green wings. “I want to have many friends,” she replied, and Doucette couldn’t help but pause in the midst of making drinks for the sheer pride she felt upon hearing those words from her newborn. Didn’t every guardian want their children to be well loved and to love well in return?

Looking down at the phone she nodded, giving one last look at her favourite image of the aurora, sweeping across an icy landscape in shades of brilliant green and the softest hints of blue. More than anything the newborn wanted to see these aurora in person, to watch them dance like ribbons across the sky and feel them brush against her. For surely they would know she was kin? They were both aurora, even if she was different, right?

Handing the phone back her wings lifted in curious question of the gift but she didn’t voice her eagerness, instead turning back to the TV where her movie remained paused. “I don’t know what a TV show is,” Ren said slowly, hesitant over admitting yet more holes in her knowledge, “But this is Maltese Falcon. They are looking for a statue.” The plot was complex and she wasn’t sure how to explain it. Additionally, she wasn’t really sure how to vocalize her interest in Humphrey Bogart, the lead actor in the movie. Movies, to Revontulet, were more than just entertainment; they were worlds to learn from and engage with.

Rivener grinned as she declared wanting many friends. "You're off to a good start, then," he chuckled, amused at her charming manner. She handed him back his phone then, looking quite unhappy about it, and he smiled in sympathy before tapping a quick note to himself: Get Rev Digital Pictureframe. She'd surely like that.

His attention was brought back to the television and he raised his eyebrows as she admitted not knowing what a TV Show was. She really WAS young! And the movie itself was a classic, which he'd guessed by the image quality on that paused screen. The name earned a nod and a grin. "I've heard of it, but never watched it! That's a shame- do you think we could watch it together?" He settled into the sofa, honestly interested. Like his companion, Rivener was quite an avid fan of movies, and they were mostly responsible for having brought him up. He'd regarded the TV as his Guardian for the longest time, since he'd interacted with it more than with Aphismet, and he still to this day loved getting lost in movies.

Idly, he also filled in the detail Revontulet had admitted not knowing: "And for the future, a TV show is something you watch on cable TV. Usually part of a whole, so every Friday at 8, for instance, I watch something called "Supernatural" for an hour. It takes a lot of fridays to see the whole story! Each time it plays is an "episode", and the whole bunch of episodes together is a "series"... And the TV Show is the name of the show! There's a whole TON of TV Shows, which you can see when you have cable... Which you might not have here. Doe, do you guys have cable?"
PostPosted: Fri Jul 05, 2013 10:06 am

No,” Doucette said with an unhappy sigh a she finally emerged from the kitchen, carrying a tray with three glasses which sweat lightly in the summer air. “It would have cost me so much extra to get the cable package out here and I just don’t watch enough TV to make it worth it honestly.” With a shrug that suggested she wasn’t entirely upset with the outcome, for extra money was always a bonus, Doe placed the tray on the coffee table before the two raevans. Even their basic channels were minimal at best, and often could not be heard or seen over other interference. Thus the girl’s lack of knowledge for TV shows did not surprise the redhead.

She’d made blue lemonade with slices of lemon floating inside which looked green mixed with the blue liquid. Revonulet smiled and plucked her drink from the tray, watching the lemon drifting with the ice as she tilted the glass one way and then another. It was her favourite drink even though she had never tried it. Doucette had simply made one for herself one day and Ren had not allowed the guardian to drink it. Instead the newborn had carried it about the house all day like a child’s teddy bear. As Revon toyed with hers in mute happiness Doe offered one to Rivener, still unsure whether he could consume human food or even be interested in doing do, but she was nothing if not polite when there were guests in the house!

Revon frowned as Rivener spoke about this new thing, TV shows, her fingers drifting against the slick, cool surface of the glass. Some of the water was absorbed, a minor snack to tide her over until it was night time and she could eat what she truly enjoyed: moonlight. “It doesn’t sound very nice...” she said hesitantly, looking at her movies which gave her instant gratification whenever she put the VHS into the player. So many Fridays to find out one story? Ren thought she felt a little ill from the prospect of not knowing the results of something for so very long!!

But he had also asked to watch the movie with her and that was really all that mattered to the slight frei, her eyes brightening much the way her hair did when it caught a particular sunbeam or other. “Yes, Riv may watch it! I just started. It is one of my favourites.” Ren floated over to the TV and rewound the first few minutes of the movie she’d already started so he wouldn’t miss even a moment of the movie before she clicked play and came back, curling her ribbon on the couch next to her and resting her head upon his shoulder as she cradled her drink against her chest.

But you mustn’t trust anyone,” the aurora said after a moment, quite conspiratorial.

Doucette smiled and shook her head, returning to the work at her desk nearby.
