Heka, like ma'at is a deity and a concept. In this thread we will only be covering what heka is as the concept.
When people talk about heka it usually gets defined as Egyptian magic, plain and simple. While calling it magic isn't that far off base per se, it doesn't really explain what it is. Heka is usually translated to "activating the ka" (the other translation being "authoritative speech" but that's hu). "To put it in laymen terms, heka is about words of any shape or variety. Spoken words, written words, signed words- just about any form of communication you can throw a stick at falls under heka" (Devo). That being said, everything you say and do can be considered heka. Yes, you read that right. Everything. The good and the bad. I like how Devo explains it in her blog post Heka is a two way street. Once a person can understand how words and actions truly affect everything, they can start to learn how to use heka well.
To read more Kemetic blogs that have posted on this subject head on over to the Kemetic Roundtable - Heka: The Basics page. Warning - One of the blogs is written by a non-English speaking Kemetic. Sat Ma'at is German. Letting you know so you don't open the blog and be like "WHAT DOES THIS SAY?!" And I don't know German so when Chrome auto-translates I don't know how correct it is.
