CLASS! WELCOME TO FANTASY FOOTBALL 101!
Introduction: Fantasy Football is one of the sport's most time honored fan traditions. Back to the days where fans would have to check newspaper sources for stats in order to score, to the modern era where we have up to the second scoring via computers. It is a mental challenge that allows for just a little more smack talk, and another thing to bet on.
How it works:
Your league participates in a draft, sometimes Auction based, where each player comes up in order of projected value, and you used your Salary Cap to try and purchase the best team.
Others, more commonly, are Snake Draft based, where your league is given a draft position and you pick in order each round, but it goes up AND down in order. Example: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. 8. 7. 6. 5. 4. 3. 2. 1. etc.
You pick your team of NFL players so that you have the best combination of players from around the league to score the most points possible. Come game time, you will have an assemply of starts, consisting of 1 Quarterback, 2 Runningbacks, 2 Wide Receivers, 1 Tight End, 1 Flex player (can be any reciever, tight end, or running back), 1 defensive squad (the entire team's defense and special teams squad), and 1 kicker. This can vary between leagues, but this is the most common combination.
Each player's stats are tracked through the games each week. Traditionally, every ten yards a receiver or runner makes, they recieve one point. For a touchdown, you earn 6 points, if the Quarterback throws for 25 yards, they receive 1 point and 6 for a touchdown. Kickers receive 3 points for field goals. Defense gain points for sacks, interceptions, and not allowing scoring, and lose points for giving up certain amounts of yards and points. Bonus points are also awarded for extra long touchdown plays or extra long field goals.
You also have a bench of players who you can use to swap in as a starter if one of your normal players either doesn't produce, gets injured, has a bad matchup, or has a bye week. There is also a free agency and waiver market for league managers to use to swap players. You may also trade players between teams if the trade is fair. Trades may be cancelled or veto'd by other league managers if the trade is one sided or there is evidence of collusion.
You put your team of players up against another team in your league every week, and the team with the most combined points that week, wins the matchup. Around week 12, the top teams go to the elimination style playoffs, and eventually head to the Superbowl, where the top two teams face off for one more week for the top prize. Some leagues play for money, this league, however, is free and is just for fun.
