What is a Mage?
Mages are wielders of Magic, using their Magic Power to cast spells and employ Magical objects. They comprise only 10% of the living population of Earth Land, with the remaining 90% being either incapable or unwilling to use Magic. They are known for usually being affiliated to a Guild, where they can take on Jobs as a source of personal income and adventure; according to Lucy Heartfilia, Mages can't be considered full-fledged until they join a Guild of their own choosing. There are three main types of Mages in the world of Fairy Tail: Legal Mages, Dark Mages, and Independent Mages.
Legal Mages are those who are a part of official Guilds, take on legal jobs and usually heed the words of the Magic Council. These are the Mages people tend to look up to, with the most famous of them having the chance to be featured in the Sorcerer Magazine.
Dark Mages are Mages who are members of Earth Land's legal Dark Guilds, Guilds which are not acknowledged as such by the Magic Council by having never been affiliated with the Council in the first place. After being deprived of the Council's approval, Guilds are ordered to disband, and, if they do not abide to such order and keep functioning, are then categorized as Dark Guilds, becoming known to all intents and purposes as criminal and assassination organizations. In collective imagination, Dark Mages usually have evil intentions, think little of others, putting their own desires first, and can be very cruel, if not downright insane. These Mages are said to take illegal Jobs and are reputed as the main opposition and threat to official Guilds and to the Magic Council itself. Many of the Dark Mages introduced so far are typically dismissive of Legal Guilds, viewing their law-abiding ways as restrictive of their full potential.
Independent Mages are Mages that don't belong to either Legal Guilds or Dark Guilds, instead being part of the so-called Independent Guilds, Guilds which aren't acknowledged by the Magic Council nor are opposed by it, likely due to the Council itself being unaware of their existence.

How Does Ranking Work?
In the world of guilds, these are the lower-ranking members, Mages. They are the newbies of the guild.
The lowest a lower-ranked mage can be is D-Rank. The highest a lower-ranked Mage can climb is A-Rank. It is possible for an A-Rank Mage to take on S-Rank jobs as a S-Rank Mage or higher must escort them to complete the job. Anyone lower than A-Rank cannot sign up for S-Rank jobs. D-Rank Bonus: > Allowed to enter the guild of their choosing without an escort.
C-Rank Bonus: > Gain 25,000 Jewel reward.
B-Rank Bonus: > Gain 50,000 Jewel reward.
A-Rank Bonus: > Mages are allowed to have recognition to become S-Class members by guildmaster or take a rigorous test to become one. > Allowed to accompany S-Class mages on S-rank Jobs. > Gain 75,000 Jewel reward
Rules: > If you leave your guild, your entire status will start over in your new guild Only by ranking. Overall stats and spells do not change regardless. > If you become a Rogue mage, you will still have your ranking status from your previous guild unless join a new guild.

S-Class Mages are the elite members of a Guild, and usually numbered among the most powerful individuals in the Guild itself.
Only officially recognized S-Class Mages are able to undertake difficult S-Class Jobs; lower-ranked Mages may only accept an S-Class mission if an officially recognized S-Class Mage is also participating alongside them. These missions are said to be so dangerous that even the smallest mistake can lead to the Mage's death. However, in return, the pay is very good, easily going into millions of Jewels.
S-Class Bonus: > Gain access to S-Rank Jobs. > Gain 100,000 Jewel reward. > Caster and Holder magic users are capable of using a second magic, but users of Lost Magic cannot.
Rules: > You cannot leave your guild. If so, you entire status will start over in your new guild ONLY by rank. Overall stats and spells do not change. > If you become Rogue, you will still have your rank status from your previous guild unless join another.

Guild Master is a term used to refer to a Mage who is the head of a Guild that he or she is affiliated with, effectively acting as the Guild's leader and highest authority.
They are fully recognized and extremely powerful Mage that has exceeded the boundaries of the average S-Class member. Though, a guildmaster is optional to wizards. As a Guildmaster of their respective Guilds, they have virtually complete authority over their subordinates, and can thus dictate their actions. Guild Masters are also tasked with smoothing relationships between Guilds in every province, something achieved through the various provincial leagues of Guild Masters, gathering from time to time in regular meetings, where each Master reports about his Guild.
Guild Master Rank Bonus: > Gain access to any job. > Gain 500,000 Jewel reward.
Rules: > If your character is by any chance deceased, inactive, or unavailable, the position will be carried on to the next person in line. > If you abuse your power and authority (godmodding), you will be stripped of your rank.

The Ten Wizard Saints are ten extremely powerful and skilled Mages.
The strength of the Ten Wizard Saints is known to be so immense that they are well renowned throughout the continent. Members of the Ten Wizard Saints are exceptionally strong where a single member is able to take on scores of average Mages with ease and defeat more powerful Mages with little effort. In fact, it has been stated that if two members, current or former, were to clash in a fight, it could cause a "cataclysm". However, it is nothing but a simple title given by the Magic Council.
To become a member of the Ten Wizard Saints, a Mage must be granted this title by the Chairman of the Magic Council (or simply the Vice Captains or Captains). There are different types of Mages who hold this prestigious title, though a few are known to be S-Class Mages of their respective guilds or even Guild Masters. In fact, some members of the Ten Wizard Saints do not even belong to guilds and can even be a part of the Magic Council.
