In his dreams, there was the rumbling, the howling of the wind, the kiss of snow. A familiar sight in his mountain home, but something about this storm was different. Mama and Papa were pacing endlessly about the fire, worried, arguing in low voices and bizarre tongues. From his bed, Aleister could do nothing but watch. Then and now, he only watched.

Then came the tumbling, the endless darkness, the nights upon end with no warmth or food. Everything was white all around them, and eventually a member of the tribe would fall, turning solid white. First Uncle, then cousins, then finally Mama, shuddering to the ground.

Anything else was lost in the recesses of his young memory. For close to a week now (though he did not know that), Aleister had been surviving in his own meager way in and around the hollow tree he'd been placed in sometime during the blizzard. There was a stream with little silver fish, and some berries and roots if he dug around. Crabbudy was also here with him, so even as he wondered about the fates of his family members, the cub was never really lonely.

This morning he was quite enjoying the solitude, as a matter of fact. Pale fingers dapped gingerly at the frigid icemelt, but Aleister was giggling as he sung a nonsense song to himself. Crabbuddy was under the water nearby, blowing bubbles. Things were peaceful, but the wind smelled like rain, and Aleister didn't want to spend another wet night in the tree. The baby looked around with naive curiosity, sniffing every so often. Where was everyone else? When were they coming back? He couldn't wait much longer.

Forage, settle, run. Forage, settle, run. Forage. Settle. Run.

It had been the pattern of Alazne's life for as long as she cared to remember, every moment since she had slithered her way out of the grasp of those... monsters. At the edge of her memory, they were nothing more than shades with long, pointed fingers, stretching out their hands to grab her around the neck. They came back in her dreams, longing to pull her back into her chains and trap her once again, but she awoke every time; sweating, but free, and her freedom was all that mattered.

Not that she had much of that anymore. When she awoke that evening, panting and chilled between sweat and the chill Spring breeze, it was to the small, fuzzy reminder that she was again chained down to a responsibility, this one much like the first little black wolftaur to wander into her life. A sigh passed her lips as she gently pat the cervitaur's soft pink hair, troubles flitting behind her yellow eyes. Though she had only just woken up, they had no time to lose; this territory was full of dangerous creatures and unfamiliar smells, and the weight of the infant had made her escape sluggish at best. Mercifully, the babe rarely fussed, easily soothed with a sip of water or a fingertip to suckle at. The fawn was tucked into a sling across her small chest, their meager provisions tucked into the bag over her shoulder.

They hadn't even gone ten feet before the clearing loomed before them, a small white child sitting within it. A curse formed beneath Alazne's breath, paws leaving their prints in the soft soil. The young woman sniffed at the air around them, looking for a sign of the child's parents, but the only scent beyond his was the smell of death and frost; it sent a shiver through her. Warily, the wolftaur left her protective covering, both hand wrapped around the bundle in her arms as she took a few steps toward the other baby, a pale child nearly twice the size of the one in her arms. He has the look of the forest about him, this one...

"Hello there, little one... Are... are you alone here?"

Just as he was wishing for company, Al looked up and it was there. A lady - a small brown lady - with a bundle in her arms that smelled oddly like food. Knowing nothing of fear, the babe met Alazne's trepidation with an innocent, curious stare and slowly rose to his back paws, nose twitching madly. The lady spoke, but he didn't understand the words, though he picked up the kindness in her voice.

Unbidden, a wide grin practically split his face in two. "Al!" he declared as means of introduction. and the cub splashed carelessly through the chilly stream to join this new person on her side of the bank. From here, he could see what she was holding better; a pinkish bundle. Gotta be meat, he thought with a small shudder of delight. It had been so long since he'd had any meat. He fidgeted restlessly, imploring the woman silently with his eyes. "Food?" he asked clumsily, it being the newest word he knew. Crabbuddy emerged from the stream and stood apprehensively behind his master as Aleister repeated his request. "Food? Food?"
