Mmkay, so I'm a junior in high school and beginning the college search. I know I want to major in tech theatre, but I don't know of any schools that offer tech theatre and are right for me. Almost every school offers a theatre major, but tech ones are a little trickier to come by. I'm interested in lighting design and stage managing, if that helps.
In addition, my family doesn't have too much money so... hahah the less tuition costs the better. However, academics and stuff is no problem since my current unweighted GPA is a 3.6 (w00t!). AND if they were in/near Texas that'd help... since that's my home state XD (But that's not essential at this point).
So, basicly if anyone knows of good schools with a good tech theatre program, I would appreciate it very, very much.

Usually theatre majors cover all aspects. If you really want to specialize consider a school of the arts, like NSCA or Savannah School of the Arts. They have programs specifically for technical work.

I forget the name of the school (I can find out from my co-worker) but there's a school in either North or South Carolina that would be perfect for you. My co-workers friend is graduating this year in lighting design. If you want to know more feel free to PM me and I'll look up info for you. 3nodding
sorry my memory is so bad sweatdrop

I live in Charlotte, NC. NCSA is AMAZING (i wish i had gone there). We also have Catawba College with the second ranked undergrad theatre program in the country! UNC-Greensboro isn't bad either but the department (students and profs) are very stuck up.

I would be suggesting something along the lines of NCSA, but it's in CO. CU has an awesome theatre program as does the Art Institute of CO, but they seem a bit out of range from where you are by what you're thinking about...

HUZZAH! NCSA -might- be in my price range. (Tuition is $14,035, according to fastweb.com, plus some toher costs). I'll have to look at financial aid but it looks like a good school.
Thanks to all, and if anyone knows anythign else let me know please =)

Mrs. Ringo Starr Usually theatre majors cover all aspects. If you really want to specialize consider a school of the arts, like NSCA or Savannah School of the Arts. They have programs specifically for technical work. Do you mean SCAD? Savannah College of Art and Design? Could be a different school...but anyway, I think they offer a general theatre tech major. Tuition's pretty steep if I remember right, but they're famously generous with scholarships. Plus the just got all new housing complexes.

I'm an idiot, but by CU do you mean Colorado University? I checked them out but for tech it's a minor and they don't seem to offer a theatre major focusing on tech. But you could be talking about somethign completely different XD Hahaha

U of C might be a good choice. They offer a range of specialized theatre tech things like lighting, costuming, set design.... I have two good friends who are going there. One specifically for special-effects makeup and they're taking him soley for that reason. The other for theatre and tech.
EDIT: By U of C, I mean Cincinnatti. I forget Ohio's not the center of the Universe sometimes.

Do you have a specific area of tech your interested in? Are you a member of USITT? Is Texas Tech any good? They're right in my price range and they're in state (HUZZAH!) but I'm not sure how good they are. But I could easily get in. I'd LOVE to go to DePaul but, eek, $20,000 tuition xx They have a lot of scholarships though I think.

one of the AEA stage managers I just worked with went to Texas Tech and loved it. Maybe you could visit them and check out there theatre and attend a rehearsal and or show?
DePaul is expensive but has an excellent all around tech program. You have to interview in person with them to get into their program I believe.
