The kitchen was clean and sparkling, and in front of him was -- finally! -- his finished recipe for the perfect lilac crunch soup. It had taken him the entire night, countless dishes, and countless desires to pull his hair out to complete. The color lilac fairly made him ill at this point.

He hadn't slept. But it was done. And now all he wanted to do was sleep.

Why, he wondered, did he spend so much time on this stupid stuff? Pink Lemonade praised his funny little cooking techniques, but would anyone else even care? Was it worth spending all night playing with recipes until he felt like a zombie at 6 a.m.?

Midnight groaned into his hooves.

It was, as far as Sunny Delight was concerned, a gorgeous morning. The sun was shining, the birds were chirping, and she was totally full of energy and ready for a day of fun, fun, fun! Not that she had anything particular planned. Sunny wasn't big on planning. She just liked to let things happen. Which didn't always work out well for her, especially in the kitchen, but she left those sorts of things to phonies with more culinary talent.

Speaking of... "Good morning, Midnightshine!" Sunny patted him on the back and looked around the kitchen, surveying its spotless state. "Up all night again, huh? You must've been working on something really cool!"

It was a little frustrating, actually. Not that Midnight Snack had talent- Sunny knew she had talent too, it just manifested in different ways- but that he knew what he wanted to do. He had something he loved enough to spend all night working on it, when she could barely keep her eyes open after nightfall. She was more than a little jealous of his passion and dedication.

Not that she'd ever say anything to that effect, of course. Instead, she began to rummage through the kitchen cabinets. "I'm so hungry I could eat a barn," she complained. Her mood had taken a slight downturn, and whining about her appetite was a safe way to vent her feelings without hurting anyone.

Plus, she really felt like she could eat a barn. If it was made of something edible, at least.

"A barn? What about a bowl of lilac crunch soup?" said Midnight Snack, looking up from his hooves, his tired eyes still holding a glint of pride in them. Sunny Delight was aptly named. Midnight couldn't get over how his sister was always so ... so... so perky in the mornings, a time of day he usually slept through gladly. It was a trait he couldn't help but envy. He always felt like a zombie after rolling out of bed. Only after a few hours was his brain really into gear.

Except for the mornings he spent with her. Her bright disposition always managed to pull the best out of him.

"I think you'll like it," said Midnight, already sitting a bit straighter in his chair. "It's... cool. And purple."

"Lilac crunch soup? Sounds dee-licious!" Sunny stopped her rifling through the cupboards and actually managed to stay still for a moment. "What is it, anyway? I never thought of soup as a breakfast food, but if you made it, it can't not be totally yummy in my tummy- if you'll let me have some, anyway."

Something made by Midnight Snack beat the pants off of cereal any day. Not that cereal wore pants. That would be funny, though, and Sunny giggled as she imagined a box of Phony-O's wearing blue jeans.

"Is this what you were working on tonight? How do you come up with these things, Snackers?" Aside from just making conversation, Sunny really wanted to know where her brother's creativity came from. Who thought of making purple soup?

"Here," said Midnight Snack, tapping the cold bowl forward with one hoof. "It's a cold soup, so maybe it'll be nice and refreshing during the mo--" he paused, suddenly yawning loudly, rubbing his eye with one hand. "... morning."

He sat up straighter as Sunny spoke to him, grinning as she giggled for no apparent reason that he could tell. He was fondest of Sunny of all his siblings; she was so bright and sweet and fun to be around. "Aw, well, it's nothing special. I guess I just can't not think of making them. You know, dad's a bottomless pit when it comes to food, and mom's always so interested in her D&D stuff, I dunno, I just sometimes think those things mixed all weird in me. I don't love snarfing food down willy-nilly, but I love everything else about it. How foods are textured. How they go together. How you can have a whole new, fun experience when you eat one thing but it doesn't taste like how you thought. I don't know -- I think about it a lot. I know a lot of people out there wanna feed other phonies, but me? I want to make 'em have an experience. I wanna make them something that later on they talk about to their friends, yanno? Something new."

He paused, realizing he was rambling. He twisted his mouth shut and then into a helpless smile -- Midnight Snack was not given to rambling, but there it was. Maybe it was easier to open up to his sister. Or maybe ... maybe he was just overtired.

"Does that make sense, Sunny D?" He propped his head up on his hooves. "Or am I being nutso? You've gotta have something like that, don't you?"

Sunny frowned in concern as her brother yawned. Not that she would ever admit to having a favorite sibling, for fear of offending one of the others, Midnight Snack was something special. Even though he kept weird hours, he was always there when she needed him, though he worried her when he exhausted himself like this. "Maybe you should have some too, Night Light! You sound like you could use a nice morning pick-me-up!"

As he explained his inspiration, Sunny found herself nodding along with a mixture of real and feigned understanding. Yes, their daddy was a vacuum cleaner for food, and mommy loved big magical games. But how did that result in making amazing foods that nobody had ever heard of before? That was just one of the many things that made him special, and was a little more than she was able to comprehend.

"As long as I get to sample, it all works for me!" Sunny liked to eat, but she did feel that Midnight's creations were more than just meals. Sunny's attempts in the kitchen also tended to be experiences- just not particularly positive ones.

When the spotlight was put back on her, she drew circles on the counter with one of her hooves as she thought about it. "I like doing kitchen stuff too, I'm just not very good at it." She shrugged, trying not to look bothered by it, but she was. "I like a lot of things, though! I like eating, 'course. I like trying to make things, even when it doesn't work. I like helping people when I can. Ummmm... I like mornings, when the sun just comes up and it's really quiet. And then you can feel everyone waking up and doing what they love to do and there's just this buzzing everywhere! I dunno how to explain, really, but does that sound kind of right?"

Unlike Midnight, Sunny was prone to rambling, and didn't see anything wrong with it. But once she realized that there was no way to accurately describe the feeling that she got when everyone around her started their day, she was quiet, trying to figure out where she was going with that thought.

Midnight's expression brightened. "Aw, Sunny, I have a morning pick-me-up. Hanging around you is always a good morning pick-me-up." He straightened, feeling more alert, his features shining with a brightness of real interest in what his sister was saying. As she spoke, he found himself trying to follow, thinking hard about what it was she was really grasping for.

"You aren't bad in the kitchen," he mused. "You can always, well, you can handle yourself around kitchen appliances, you know...? And you are the most chipper person I know in the morning, you know? It's weird. When it's just me waking up late, I feel all groggy and grumpy. But when you're around and I have to be up early, it's a lot better. You're so sunshiney, and you make me really appreciate the morning instead of making me wanna go back to bed. It's refreshing!"

He paused, thinking. "You know, like... like, I don't know. Sometimes I feel like people would be a lot less grumpy if they could just have someone like you making sure they start their morning right. You make sure I eat, get a splash of coffee or a smoothie, make sure I take stock of how nice it is out instead of dwelling on grumpy stuff like whether I'm late or not and whether I wanna go back to bed. And it doesn't even seem like you try! It's more like just... how you are."

"Awwwwwww!" Sunny blushed and patted Midnight Snack on the back, a bit harder than was really necessary. She didn't mind compliments- quite the opposite, in fact- but something that nice and heartfelt could be a bit overwhelming. Especially when it hit the nail right on the head. Sunny loved mornings, and if she could help other people feel good about them, that was something. Or at least, the start of something.

The compliments kept on coming, but these were easier to take. "I've been practicing!" she announced, pleased that someone had noticed. "I can make a sandwich without anything ker-sploding now! And I can boil water!" For Sunny and her tiny attention span, these were real achievements. She didn't fool herself into thinking she was nearly as handy in the kitchen as Midnight, or CanCan, or anyone who really loved it more than anything else. Cooking was nice, and she suspected it ran in her family, but most of the time, Sunny preferred eating food to cooking it.

And it was time to return some of those compliments, she decided. "If I'm sunshiney, it's because I sleep well knowing you're doing all sorts of cool things! I always wonder, 'what's All-Nighter gonna make tonight?' and then I have really nice dreams! And when I wake up, there's something totally yum-tastic for me to try! Like that!" She pointed a hoof at the bowl of purple soup. "I don't even know what it is, really, but I'm sure it's tasterrific!"

The half an idea she had was starting to take shape. How Midnight Snack had gone from 'I like mornings' to 'get people started right' was beyond Sunny, but she didn't care. "That's amazing," she gushed, eyes wide as she thought about it. "That's exactly the sort of thing I'd want to do! But I couldn't do it by myself- not when you help me so much, making all your cool stuff and coming up with awesome ideas." Like the one they were discussing, for instance. "You make me wish I could stay awake long enough to see how you do what you do. I can't believe you don't share that with more people than just me and the family!"

Another puzzle piece clicked into place, and the picture started to become clearer, but there were still a few gaps that needed to be filled in.

Midnight could not get enough of the expression on his sister's face. It seemed like everything was just dawning on her, that her talent didn't have to be in the kitchen to be incredibly useful. And then her words made something else dawn on Midnight: namely, just how they could help each other make all this talk come true.

"First of all," said Midnight with a laugh, "All-Nighter is tinkering with silly little things, waiting to feed his sister in the morning and see what she thinks. And I'll have you know, that soup is tasteriffic. It better be, at least. And, well... second of all, you know -- did you meet Pink Lemonade?"

He sucked in a breath, things becoming clearer in his head. "Well, Pink Lemonade is really good at business-stuff, even though she's a filly, and she's got this restaurant she really wants to open when she's big. She wants me to help out, so I can serve people all the funny food I make, and I was thinking -- what... what if you were a part of that stuff, Sunny D? What if you and me went into business together when we're big? I'll deal with the late nights and you perk people up in the morning. We could be a team!"

He smiled widely, prodding his sister in the ribs, teasing and bright. "Whaddya say, sis? Want to stick with me when we're older?"

All of this talk about soup would normally make Sunny even hungrier, but she didn't move towards the bowl. Something special was happening, and she was so amazed that her appetite didn't even register. She could see it now, the picture that Midnight Snack was creating for her- for them- and she loved what she saw.

Pink Lemonade wasn't a name that sounded familiar, so she shook her head, unwilling to speak until she was sure she had everything straight. It sounded like Midnight Snack already had big plans for the future, which didn't surprise her a bit. But the possibility that she might have a place in those plans, with other phonies who could do important things, was almost more than she could hope for.

And yet, she knew it could happen. The final puzzle piece clicked into place, and Sunny started hopping up and down in excitement. "YES. Yes yes yes yes that sounds amazing and perfect and fantastic and, and... yes!" This would be the most awesome thing since the invention of awesomeness!

"Let's do it, Snackeroo! Let's perk up eeeeeeveryone, together!" Finding something she was passionate about was good enough, but if she could do it with her brother, she couldn't think of anything better.

Watching his younger sister leap up and down in amazement drew a deep laugh from Midnight, and he continued to laugh through her jumping exclamations until his sides hurt and his cheeks ached. But he did not fault what she said, no -- he relished it. Because it was perfect and fantastic and awesome and yes.

"Well then, that settles it," said Midnight at last, grinning brightly. "You and me, Sunny D. You and me."
