High-functioning Marshmallow

Perhaps if this was a resort or more advanced area, there would be a lift or elevator – maybe even a paved road – that could lead one to the top safely. Here, it is necessary to hike. That journey, however, is reserved for the mountain. This is the final destination and a fine one it is! The top isn't completely flat, but it is far more leveled and easier to walk on with the few creatures being found here rather docile and peaceful. The trees are sparse and the wind whips about relentlessly, but there is a tranquility that few areas in the world can match. One edge of the mountain top can be best described as a cliff with no fence or warning aside from your own vision to it's depth. Though, as one sits here, the occasional reptile scurrying by, watching the hawks and eagles pass overhead, a glorious view can be seen overlooking the forest, river, and practically the whole island with good eyes. Be careful not to jump when the elegant mountain goat comes foraging through and do pay a visit to the shrine centering the expanse. Here, we give worship to the Earth Fairy and all it's past followers.

It was funny how this sort of thing could just happen. Last night, Elliot had showered the sand off from being buried at Beach Day, then changed into her pajamas and climbed into her nice, comfortable bed. All that stimulation had worn her out, and it didn't take long for her to slip into warm, blissful sleep. She had fallen asleep comfortably, but waking up was another story. The sun rose earlier than she had wanted, and it shone right in her face. She let out a half-asleep huff as she turned over and went to pull her comforter up higher -- but there was no comforter. As she groped the air blindly, she realized that she wasn't lying on her nice, soft sheets either. There were rocks and twigs under her instead, and it smelled like pine and dirt. It was pretty windy here, too, and Elliot didn't even have a fan in her room.
She took the realization surprisingly well, or maybe not that surprisingly, since it was Elliot. She sat up and looked around her. She was up high, all around her were rocks. Beyond that it was a mass of green, and further beyond that was the large expanse of blue. The morning fog had not yet burned off, and white wisps of cloud drifted through the air around her, below her. She knew where she was. She had been here before, during superhero adventures and other outings with friends. But that was long ago, and while she recognized the place, she didn't know how far away from home she truly was. Cupping her face in her hands, she sat with her knees against her chest. She was barefoot, but her feet had no marks from twigs or rocks, so she couldn't have walked up here on her own. Who had brought her here? "Finnian?" she said softly, her high voice carrying away in the wind. She didn't know why her roommate would do this, but it was an answer she could at least wrap her head around.

As if the sounds of nature springing to life all around him weren't bad enough, there was some broad over yonder practically screaming. He rubbed his eye quickly and sat up, his legs spread a bit out in front of him. Instantly, he felt the pang of a rock boring into his leg, something he jerked away from quickly. It all hadn't quite settled in as he yawned and scratched his messy mane. He looked over to where some of the noise was coming and saw an expansive area of rock and something that appeared to be a person's head. He looked left, and then right, and then left once more, just for good measure. "Where the ******** am I?!" He tried to jump to his feet, but found that he was rather dizzy and ended up clumsily falling back onto the ground. This caused even more confusion, and he looked down at his legs to make sure they were still there and fully functional. In doing so, he noticed what he was wearing: a simple pair of navy blue boxers. He probably should have rethought not wearing a shirt, if only he would have known the sun was going to be so prominent. Or, y'know... know that he was going to wake up in some strange, unknown place.
As he regained a bit more of his consciousness, he attempted to run through the events of the previous night. He remembered flaunting his great new swimsuit around time, playing in the sand, and going home. Of course, he had stopped along the way and grabbed a bottle of vodka. Maybe he never even made it home. But, if that was the case, why was he wearing his pajamas? That didn't make sense. He placed his hands to his head, desperately trying to remember what could have wound him up here when he remembered the voice that had helped to draw him out of his slumber. There was another person here. Maybe they would know the whos, wheres and whys, since he clearly had taken care of the whats. He tried, much more gingerly, to make his way over towards the head he had seen. This time choosing to crawl. More rocks embedded themselves into his skin, but he was making progress and it didn't matter. The head was growing in size, and he was happy to see someone else in this predicament. The thought had never even crossed his mind that this person may, in fact, be the one responsible for all of this. He stopped roughly five feet away from her and leaned back to sit up and take notice of this person. "I see that we have ourselves a party for two." He smiled and adjusted his eye patch a little. If there's one thing he had learned that people didn't like, it was being able to see into his skull. "Do you have any idea what's going on, doll face?"

Although it didn't seem it, Elliot was quite distressed over this whole situation, and had failed to notice that she was not alone. The first outburst didn't even make her flinch, but instead she turned to watch a man with long hair and an eyepatch (she remembered seeing him around, as people with eyepatches were still relatively rare) crawled over towards her. His legs and torso were bare, and it must have hurt crawling on the ground like that. She watched him sit up and speak to her, but she did not say anything at first. She simply looked him over, from top to bottom to top again, and cocked her head to the side thoughtfully.
"I don't know," she said finally, her voice soft and flat as usual. You wouldn't think she had just had the shock of her life, she was so composed. "Do you know Finnian?" Maybe if he did, that could explain their predicament. But he looked more like a villain, with the eye patch and the hair and the 'doll face', and she was sure that Finnian wouldn't throw her onto a mountain top with a villain. ...Or would he? Without Popcorn, the victim slot was open, maybe this was Finnian doing. "You look like a villain. Are you a villain?" she questioned, tilting her head in the other direction as she stared at him. Couldn't hurt to ask!

A villain? What the hell was this crazy broad talking about? She must think that this is some kind of a game. He wouldn't mind playing along, maybe that's what got her going. She was pretty hot. What else had she said, something about a Finnian? He racked his brain and tried to think of anyone by that name that he knew. There were so many random people that he had passed and that sometimes stayed at the inn, but no Finnian stood out in his mind. "Sorry, babe. I don't know any Finnian." He moved slightly to position himself onto his button and off of his shins. This girl did seem pretty calm about the entire situation, it made him a bit more weary of her. Was she the mastermind behind all of this? Her petite frame and innocent c**k of the head could well add together to make her the perfect criminal. All Riley knew was that it made her so much more desirable.
It was rare for Riley to find anything that he wasn't attracted to, but something about their predicament just screamed a lovely little tragedy to him. They could be the destined lovers, like Fabio & Juliet, or whatever the hell it was. "Maybe I am the villain," He said with a smile, as he picked up a rock and fiddled it around in his hand, "but maybe you are. I mean you do seem mighty calm for someone completely out of the loop." Of course, so did he. But, his motives were entirely different as he was trying to be the macho love interest in this lovely little game of fate they were playing. He wasn't allowed to be scared.

...So he didn't know Finnian. That potentially ruled out the superhero prospect, but Elliot still wasn't sure. On one hand, she couldn't see her good friend and roommate leaving her alone with a stranger, a potentially dangerous villain. On the other hand, well... what if he were a real villain, and everything he was saying was a lie? ...Oh, it was enough to make her brain feel heavy.
"That sounds like something a villain might say," she replied as he smiled at her. She didn't know very much about the battle between good and evil, except that sometimes Finnian told her to put on spandex and a mask and just go with it, but weren't villains supposed to be good at smiling and tricking people? Wasn't that why they were villains and not prisoners? "I don't try to be calm. I just am," she added, as explanation. "I would like to go home, though. I know we're on top of the mountain, but I do not remember how to get down. Do you know?" ...Well, even if he were a villain, he didn't really seem that dangerous, and if he didn't know what was going on, then maybe he hadn't brought her here to hurt her. Afterall, villains could sometimes be the victims. Maybe it was a risk, but Elliot didn't like being up here, and she was afraid someone might worry. Yes, the sooner they could return to the town the better. She was even starting to get a little bit hungry.

Riley continued rolling the rock around in his hand and looked out over the mountain momentarily while she talked. He looked back at her with the mention of home. "I'd like to get back home, too. It's pretty hot out here, and I'm sure you're really feeling it." He couldn't help but smile again, he hadn't ever seen anything like the bed clothes she was wearing. He hadn't ever tried the whole furry thing, but he could dig it. He took a quick second to give her another one-over, yeah he could totally dig it. His legs felt a little more stable, and so he tried to stand up again and stretched a little. Ah, it felt nice to be able to stretch out his legs. From here he could see a little bit further down the mountain. Survivalist instincts were not really much part of his genetic build, he probably wouldn't be able to find their way back down if he even had a map. He'd just have to travel by trial and error and with no shoes, that might not be very possible.
The view from up here was actually pretty nice, a small part of him regretted never making the trip. At least now he could brag about it, if he ever made it down. That thought almost hadn't occurred to his as he wasn't much thinking about the predicament and mostly concentrating on the person with him. But, he couldn't allow himself to show fear now. He had to be strong and stay calm, he couldn't let her out-calm him. "I'm really not sure how to get down. It looks like there's some kind of a path, but it's riddled with rocks. We can try to walk it, I guess. Unless you have some other plan?" He turned back to her and kicked around a bit of the dirt and smaller rocks as he waited for her input. As far as he was concerned, the quicker they got down, the better.

What? WHAT? They were talking about leaving? Ilex couldn't stand for that, not when these two seemed to be on the verge of some serious baby-making time! He wished Riley was under him, but he guessed he had to be patient with Elliot! It wasn't like he could be mad at her when she was in that so cute costume~! Ahhh, he wished he could just wrap her up and take him home with him so THEY could have some lovely – oh, no, wait, bad Ilex. This was Riley's woman to woo! And he knew just what to do to make them both fall deeply in love~! Invisible to everyone but probably Elliot, because Ilex didn't see why he should hide himself from his own followers, he MAGICALLY super glued forced Elliot's and Riley's hands to be stuck together. But.. that didn't seem like enough, did it? So, he conjured up a plush pillow and put a diamond ring on there for their engagement, setting it in the middle of the clearing so they could see it – or they would see it if Ilex didn't have another BRILLIANT plan! He poofed away and quickly came back with a not-happy-monkey in hand, dropping the screeching bundle on Riley's head so he could valiantly rescue Elliot! Ah, this was going to be perfect! Happy with his handiwork, he poofed away to his next couple~!

When Riley stood up, Elliot followed suit, wobbling slightly as she adjusted to standing on the ground in bare feet. ...Now that he mentioned it, she was feeling a little warm, so she tugged down the hood of her pajamas, pulling her hair out and away from her neck. "No... I don't have a plan..." she replied vaguely. There really wasn't anything else they could do but walk, was there? They didn't have bicycles or a tiger to ride, so it really was up to them to get down on their own power. She wasn't very good at hiking, but she'd do her best.
She had just taken a small step as a test, when she could have sworn she saw something out of the corner of her eye, and all of a sudden her hand wrenched itself into Riley's. "Ah! Please let go!" she reacted immediately, her initial reaction being to withdraw at the strange contact, yet she could not do so. She was startled by what she assumed to be Riley's somewhat aggressive gesture, and tugged her hand back. That's when she heard a screech, and looked up to see a monkey on Riley's head. Were there wild monkeys on the mountain? Where did it come from, there weren't any trees overhead! "Oh! Mr. Monkey, please calm down!" she cried, forgetting about their hands for a moment. She forgot about a lot of things, actually, she was just so overwhelmed and frightened by this sudden development.

The sight was truly beautiful from way up here, he really just couldn't get over it. He found himself staring off again without even realizing that she had stood up next to him. It wasn't until he felt her gripping at his hand that he was jolted back to reality. That was a bit forward of her, but he had to admit he kind of liked it. Her hands were pretty warm, although that was probably from all of the fur. Either way, it was nice. He turned over to look at her, planning on saying something suave about how if she was scared, he would gladly hold her and carry her on down the mountain. Then it quickly became apparent that she did not want this and he instinctively tried to pull back even after seeing that she couldn't get away from him. "What the ******** is---"
He was cut short of finishing his thought when a monkey was placed onto him seemingly out of thin air. "THE ******** IS THIS?!" He screamed much louder this time and started reaching for the damn creature and tried to pull it from him. Unfortunately, the weight on one of his hands was restricting him from being able to fully yank the monkey from both sides and he just began awkwardly tugging at it from the other, which only angered the thing. "OH GODDESS!" The monkey had now got a grip of his hair and for once, he regretted letting it grow out. It was screeching and tugging at him and the only solution to him was to recruit help from... ******** he hadn't even asked her her name. He dropped down to his knees, almost able to completely ignore the rocks jabbing into his flesh. "HELP ME!" The arm attached to her was still up towards her, but he could now use it a bit better to try to get a grip of this beast.

Elliot grimaced as Riley raised his arms; he was much too tall and she was much too short for this attached-hand thing to work, and for one moment she could have sworn her feet left the ground. Thankfully for her poor arm, Riley dropped to his knees, meaning that she could stand there comfortably as he had his head mauled by an angry monkey. She was flustered, that was true, but that didn't mean she had become totally useless. This man asked for her help, and she would do the best she could. "Please stop moving," she said in an almost commanding voice. She was already beginning to fall into animal trainer mode. If she could train an elephant to juggle chickens (a trick that hadn't made it into the circus show for budgetary reasons) she could get this monkey to calm down!
She began to make soft monkey sounds, throwing in little coos and clicks of her tongue to get the monkey's attention. It was screeching pretty loudly, so her voice was mostly drowned out, but after a few moments of making strange noises at it, it looked in her direction, and immediately fell quiet. Its eyes met Elliot's, and the two stared at each other in silence, Elliot's large, dark eyes meeting the monkey's. Time seemed to stop, the sounds of the forest fading into nothingness, nothing mattering but them, just them, woman and monkey and monkey and woman and this unbreakable bond they shared. Elliot understood the monkey and the monkey understood her, and for one moment, woman and monkey were one, one heart and one soul and one mind swirling together in the great consciousness of the cosmos.
And then Elliot blinked.
The monkey let go of Riley's hair immediately (though gave him one more swat for good measure) and began to monkey-chirp calmly. It left Riley's head alone completely, running down his shoulder and along his arm that was attached to Elliot's. When it reached Elliot's shoulder, it sat down and wrapped its tail loosely around her neck and began to look for nits in her long, red hair. Elliot's expression had remained unchanged, but there was a small, pleased glint to her eye as she looked at Riley. "Are you okay?" she asked in her usual monotone. Well, that wasn't so bad afterall.

Riley was trying his best to stop moving at the command of Elliot, but it was pretty damn hard with a monkey trying to scalp him. How was she staying so calm? Would there be any ******** emotion if this thing was tearing into her?! Wait. What the ******** was that. He turned his head towards her, completely astonished by the odd sounds that she was making. He couldn't believe that this was what he was putting all of his hope into. The only plus was that he was no longer fidgeting so frantically. The shock had mostly paralyzed him. When it seemed as it couldn't ever get much worse, things got weird. The monkey stopped fighting at him and left his arm to go find a perfect little seat on Elliot's shoulder. Riley just kind of stared at her, then at the monkey, then back at her. He cleared his throat and then stood up. He stared at her for a few more beats. "The ******** was that?!" He broke the silence to question her strange actions. He could honestly say that he had never seen anything like that before, and he had seen some pretty weird s**t in his day.
It had almost completely taken him away from his agenda. Now that he was standing, he couldn't help but feel more of the heat beating down on his head. "Goddess. Let's start walking. You can explain to me about your freaky monkey s**t along the way." He nodded to her, scowled at the monkey and then turned to head down the path. It wasn't very hard to get her to comply since they were now hand in hand. Hell, he'd just throw her over his shoulder if he had to. Unfortunately, their hands did make it a significant amount hotter. He had never been much of a hand holding guy, and really couldn't remember very many times that he had held someone's hand since middle school. It was kind of nice. He looked up at Elliot with a smile as they walked. Maybe this would be kind of romantic if it wasn't for the ******** summer heat and his feet weren't constantly stabbed by rocks.

Oh, foo! Ilex was in near tears as he slowly fluttered his sad way up the mountain, covering his ears to try to stop the berates of Hyacinth from worming their way into his head even as he left to do what she asked. She was so.. so..! ...So cute with how she cared about little Ilex like she really, really loved him..! Ah, Ilex was so happy that Hyacinth had given him such attention, but he really wished she wouldn't talk so much! Or make him release people just because they could 'die' or something. It wasn't like he wasn't going to feed them in a few weeks! He did just fine without eating for years, after all! He sighed as he saw that Elliot and Riley had not done what they were supposed to and were instead heading down the mountain. Oh, well. He rubbed his hands together and stomped on the ground a few times, coaxing bright, shiny yellow stones to rise and form a road leading home for the lost couple. They would go back under after midnight, of course, but at least he could hope the yellow brick road would make them hold hands or make out or something! It was romantic, right? ..Awe, well, he had to go free more people, he guessed.
{ Riley and Elliot are free~! uwu }
